NARRATOR: As the 2000s drew to a close, mother nature had a surprise left in store.
AMANDA: We have a tendency to get a little excited about snow predictions in this city.
Roane: And then the snow starts falling, and it keeps falling, and it doesn't stop falling.
NARRATOR: A foot and a half of snow later, the blizzard had a new name, Snowpocalypse.
Two months later, Snowmageddon would dump two more feet of snow on the region.
ROXANNE: The great thing about snowstorms is that the city is literally frozen in time.
AMANDA: I remember walking up Florida Avenue, like the middle of the street because there were no cars.
DAN: And then there were the snowball fights.
♪ ♪ CATHY: This is where I think social media really started to show the impact it can have.
DAN: The snowball fights started out, like, relatively small, and then every single person wanted to know when's the next snowball fight?
There was a Facebook page that was created.
YATES: And there was one particular incident that I'll never forget, where a cop pulled his gun on a guy who hit his car with a snowball.
AMANDA: It was totally wild, and people started chanting, "Don't bring a gun to a snowball fight."
CROWD: Don't bring a gun to a snowball fight!
