Colin: They will learn to see loved ones in a new light, rebuild relationships, and find strength as a family.

Colin: But in the end, only one family can come out on top and take home the $10,000 cash prize.

Colin: This week, the Escobedos from Port Arthur, Texas... Sergio: I'm doing this for the family; I'm doing this for the kids.

Seth: Being able to see my daughters grow, it's really a dad's dream.
Stacy: Come on, Grace!
Colin: Who'll be the first to raise their family's flag... - We got this.
Colin: ...and be this week's Survivalists.
♪♪ Family: We're the Escobedos!
Zulema: We like to compete and we're very, very fun to be around.
Sergio: We are go-getters, you know.
We always go forward; we don't look back.
♪♪ Family: And we're the Richardsons from Birmingham, Alabama.
Stacy: I would describe my family as, uh, the life of the party.
Abigail: I'm nervous that we will be showing our really competitive side.
- We wouldn't play if we weren't gonna win.
♪♪ - Welcome to Survivalists!
[cheering] Colin: Escobedo family, I wanna go to you first.
How are you feeling having your whole family here in these beautiful mountains of Idaho?
- I feel really good and really pumped, ready to do this!
- Obviously this is a competition, but more than that, is there a bigger, deeper purpose for being out here as a family?
- Yes, it's just to get closer together, you know, and enjoy this beautiful outdoors.
My wife's never been out in the wilderness, neither has my daughter, Elaina.
I hope to show them how great is the outdoors.
- I wanted to prove to my husband that I can actually stay out here and be a team player.
- [laughing] - Mindy, tell me a little about the dynamic between you and your sister.
How is it gonna be out there on the trail?
- You know, I'm expecting to get along with her, but be frustrated with her at the same time.
You have me and my dad that like to be outside; we like to go hunting and fishing.
But then you have Elaina and you have my mom that are scared of the fly that just ran across their face.
- I would describe myself as a girly girl.
I can go for hours putting on my makeup.
Colin: Elaina, how are you gonna do when you're out there and you're-- you can't put on makeup?
- Wait, so we can't bring makeup?
Colin: Elaina, have you spent a lot of time outdoors or camping before in your life?
- No!
This is gonna be a very new experience for me.
I'm a little bit nervous to go out into the woods because I've never camped before, so I don't know what it's gonna be like.
Colin: You're gonna have to be present in the outdoors for the next several days.
You feeling okay about that?
- [sigh] I'm excited!
- The look on your face looked like-- almost like seeing a bear or something furry in the wild, and it looked like your biggest fear.
- If Elaina can make it through being in the mountain for three days and not having a real shower, not having a real bathroom, then I'll be really proud of her.
- I'll be able to handle it.
Mindy and my dad just think that I'm gonna be messing up along the way, but I want to prove to them that I can actually do things in the wilderness and pull through.
Mindy: If she can do that, she's really proving to me that she's a changed person.
- [panicked scream] Oh, I'm sorry, there was a spider on me!
[nervous laughing] Oh!
- Mindy, tell me about your family's flag here.
Mindy: The cross represents our faith-based family line.
The crown represents mine and Elaina's junior Miss Mexican Heritage Queen race.
And then the cat whiskers and the heart represent the love that we have for animals and our four cats at home since they couldn't be here with us today.
- All right, over to you guys, Richardson family.
How are you feeling?
Seth: Man I can't wait, this is great.
You know, I've kind of grown up in the outdoors.
Just having my family out here in the mountains is amazing.
Stacy: In the seventh grade, my daughter, one of her dear friend's father died in a car accident.
So life changed in an instant.
We really do appreciate that not every moment is guaranteed, and so we really want to make sure that our girls seize every moment and really appreciate them for what they are and-- and be in the moment 'cause we never know what tomorrow holds.
- Abigail, is it intimidating for you to look at, knowing you're gonna spend a few days out there in those mountains?
- Yeah, but I think we can do it.
[laughing] - How do you do working with your sister, Grace?
- Um, I think we have a tight bond.
- Oh, we're the dream team.
[laughing] - Yeah.
- This is definitely an opportunity for them to grow and to be challenged.
I think our girls are gonna do great, I really do.
- Tell me about your family's flag here.
Seth: Our flag really represents our story.
Uh, the mountains for where we met and where Grace was born, the ocean for where Abigail was born, and now the four pine trees because we live in Birmingham, Alabama.
- I love it.
Well, both teams, it's so great to have you here.
You're about to embark on an arduous 3-day, 13-mile expedition through dry bush and rolling mountains.
Day one, you'll be navigating all-terrain vehicles, scrambling up a three-story boulder, and climbing over 1200 feet to reach your camp for the night.
Day two, you'll be challenged with the highest elevation of the race, reaching over 7,000 feet before making a steep descent and then paddling your way to your second camp.
Day three, you'll race three miles over difficult terrain to the finish line where the first family to raise their flag will be declared the winner.
Before I set you off in the wild, do you want to know what we're competing for?
Seth: That'd be great!
Escobedos: Yes!
Colin: All right.
We've got these right here.
Check those out.
- Ooh.
- Maybe open 'em up, see if there's something inside.
- Ooh!
- Ooh, I'm scared.
- [yelling] Colin: The backpacks are stuffed with $10,000 of cash.
[cheering] Colin: If your family wins the money, what would you want to do with it?
- You know, me and Elaina have actually wanted to build this foundation together where foster children and foster pets can come together.
- Kinda like they each have an assigned foster friend.
Mindy: My dad actually grew up as a foster child; he didn't have his parents growing up.
[emotionally] So, um, it's very close to our hearts.
We wouldn't want other children to go... [sniff] Sorry.
Colin: No, it's okay!
- ...to go through it alone.
- Yeah.
We want to help build families with this money.
- I love that you know you'll be competing for something that's deeply meaningful to all of you.

- All right families, as you know, you're about to embark on a multi-day expedition.
But before doing that, I'm gonna give you the opportunity to visit the General Store, where you can grab all the essential items to survive your three-day extreme expedition.
But you'll only have 90 seconds inside to find everything you need.
In order to gain more time, I've set up three survival challenges.
For each challenge you win, you'll add an additional 30 seconds to your clock.
Up first, we're gonna test one of the most important skills in all of survival: fire.
♪♪ Collin: All right families, here we are for the first of our survival competitions: fire.
All you guys have to start a fire is flint and steel, and wood and tinder all found in the natural environment.
What you need to do is use that to spark the fire, burn the rope.
Once the rope burns through all the way, it will drop the rock, landing in the water.
Whosever's rock hits the water first, wins 30 extra seconds for their family in the General Store.
How are you feeling, Stacy?
- I'm pumped and nervous.
[laughing] - Mindy, how are you feeling?
- I think I'm in the same boat right now!
Colin: Okay!
Three, two, one, go!
[metallic scratching] Colin: Okay, they're both going to the magnesium first to try to get a little pile of that to spark a flame.
- Come on Momma, you got it.
- Come on, you got it, Mom.
Colin: 'Kay, looks like Stacy may be trying to switch tactics here.
Mindy's doing the same thing.
- Go, go, go, Mimi.
Colin: Oh.
I see one spark flying over there.
Elaina: Come on, Mindy!
Colin: Mindy's got the first sparks.
- Come on Mindy, you can do it!
- I'm trying here, buddy.
I don't know if I'm gonna be able to do this.
I'm pretty nervous, I have a lot of pressure from my family, my hand is giving out.
I'm scared.
My hand is gonna fall off!
Colin: There's a spark flying for Stacy!
- Come on, Momma.
Colin: Oh, Mindy's got a lot of sparks flying now.
- Mindy, spark it!
Colin: Oh, there's a flame over there!
Mindy's got a flame.
- Come on, Mindy!
Colin: Oh, Mindy's got a clear advantage at this point.
Stacy still hasn't got it sparked.
- I'm gonna stay in the game; I'm gonna keep at it.
- Stacy's not given up.
- I hope that I can start a fire as well.
I'm not gonna quit.
Sergio: Keep piling it up!
Colin: Mindy's got a big flame going.
- Come on, Mindy!
Seth: Come on, wind.
Elaina: [cheering] Colin: Mindy looks very close to winning!
[splash] Sergio: All right!
Colin: There it is!
There it is.
Congratulations.
[cheering] - Good job, good job.
High five, high five.
Colin: Oh, that's good sportsmanship.
I love seein' that.
Well, Mindy, congratulations.
You won the fire challenge and you won the Escobedo family 30 seconds extra in the General Store to get your crucial supplies.
[clapping] Zulema: Nice job.
Colin: Elaina, how did you feel seeing your sister win this first challenge?
- Um, I'm really proud of her.
I didn't think she could pull it off, but she did, so!
Colin: Richardsons, not to worry.
There's time for you to stage a comeback.
The second challenge is gonna be another one of the most key components of survival: the water challenge.
♪♪ Families, welcome to the water challenge!
[cheering] What happens is, you're gonna come over here and fill these buckets with water, run those buckets down to that side and fill the barrel.
Once the barrel fills up high enough, you can turn on the spigot and fill up your jug.
Whichever family fills their jug up first wins the challenge and an extra 30 seconds for their family in the General Store.
Richardsons, who's it gonna be?
- Grace and Abigail!
Colin: And for the Escobedos, we've got Sergio and Elaina.
All right, come on up!
Who's ready to get wet?
Let's go!
Seth: All right, let's go girls, let's go.
Zulema: All right!
Let's go.
- You got it, girl.
Colin: All right, three, two, one, go!
[clanking] The Escobedos are working together.
Abigail's waitin' her turn.
- Come on, come on, come on.
- All right, they've got the first bucket.
The Richardson's are taking an early start.
Abigail: Let's go, go!
Colin: Abigail's tagging it out.
Mindy: Come on, Elaina, come on, Dad, y'all got this!
- Slightly different tactics here.
They're alternating and these guys are doing two at a time.
Abigail's making sure every drop gets in that barrel.
Seth: Make sure we get all the water.
Mindy: Keep running.
You got this, you got this!
Colin: The altitude plays a key role in this.
It's not easy running back with these buckets.
You can tell Elaina's feeling that.
Elaina: I'm losing my breath and I'm really having to push myself to go harder and harder and harder.
[splashing] Mindy: You're amazing, Dad.
You got this, you got this!
Sergio: Come on, come on!
Mindy: Come on, Elaina, come on!
[cheering] Colin: Looks like Sergio thinks he can open up his spigot.
Ope, there's water-- there's water coming out for the Escobedos!
- You got this!
Colin: It's not flowing too fast, but it looks like it's starting to fill!
They've got a clear advantage right now.
Sergio's almost there!
[splash] Colin: Victory!
- Yes!
[cheering] Colin: Victory!
[cheering] Colin: The Escobedos win the water challenge!
Elaina: [happily laughing] - Yay!
Elaina: Me and my family are on a very good roll right now and hopefully we just keep the pace going enough for us to win this entire competition.
Sergio: Y'all did really good.
Colin: Love to see that sportsmanship, congratulating each other.
That's what it's all about.
Abigail: Thank you.
Elaina: You're welcome.
Colin: Well Escobedos, congratulations.
You are the winners of the water challenge.
Richardsons, you did an incredible job.
It was right down to the wire there.
Sergio: They did.
- Still feeling confident your team has what it takes to keep competing?
- Everybody loves a comeback story.
Colin: That's right!
And this competition is far from over.
We still have animal tracks.
- Oh, my gosh.
- Wow!
♪♪ - All right families, welcome to your third and final challenge: animal tracks!
[cheering] On this board, there's animal tracks.
You'll have to flip them around.
Over there at the podium, you'll have pictures of animals.
You need to match those animals to the tracks on the board.
Whichever family can match all six animal tracks to their respective animals wins this challenge and an extra 30 seconds in the General Store for crucial supplies.
All right, come on up to your boards.
Mindy: Come on Mom, you got this!
Grace: You got it, Dad.
Colin: On my go.
Three, two, one, go.
Mindy: Go Mom!
You got this!
Seth: My strategy is flip 'em all over so that I can see what the tracks were, build a game plan, and then go after it.
Sergio: Come on, you can do it!
Mindy: Come on Mom, you got this!
- What I wasn't prepared for is there were some things I just had never seen before.
Elaina: Okay, you got this, Mom.
Colin: Zulema is taking her time trying to select the first one here.
Zulema: I don't know anything about animals' feet.
I'm just gonna try to put them together like a puzzle.
Mindy: You still have time, you still have time!
Stacy: 'Kay, fix it up, pick it up.
I can't tell you if you're right, but I love you.
Colin: Zulema's still got more in there.
But are they in the right position, that is the question.
Mindy: Come on, Mom, just think.
- Oh, my gosh.
- You can do this, Mom.
You can do this.
- Come on, come on!
Colin: Seth's going for another option.
Unfortunately, that is not correct.
Seth has four of the six, but not in the right order.
Seth: Once you change one, it messes them all up.
So you got to get them all right.
Colin: They're still not in the right order.
You have five of the six.
Stacy: Go back, look at it, and figure it out.
Zulema: Am I right or am I wrong?
- Let me check it.
Unfortunately, several of those are wrong.
Elaina: Oh, my gosh!
Sergio: [laughing] Colin: You've got to reorder them.
Zulema: It's really hard to decide which one was the wrong one.
And that's where I kind of got stuck.
Colin: You still only have five of the six correct down.
Sergio: Come on, come on.
Just switch 'em, switch 'em around.
- And the winner is the Richardsons!
Richardsons: [cheering] Colin: Seth got it!
Congratulations, congratulations.
- Well thankfully, we pulled it out.
You know, after those two losses, uh, morale was pretty low on our team.
So we're going into the trek on a high note.
- Is there some relief there that you guys won that one?
- Whooo, yeah.
It was a little-- it was tougher than I thought it was gonna be, honestly.
- Oh, my gosh.
They all looked the same in my eyes!
[laughing] - Let's go to the General Store.
It's time to shop it up.
♪♪ [clank] [creaking] Colin: Welcome to the General Store.
[cheering] Colin: I wanted to give you a little bit of time to shop for some gear that you're gonna need on this multi-day expedition.
So each family gets 90 seconds to start with.
But the Escobedo family, you won two challenges, so you get an additional 60 seconds.
Zulema: All right!
- And the Richardsons, since you came back in the final challenge, you get 30 seconds extra.
- All right, we'll take it.
- Now, here's the catch.
Everything you grab with you inside the General Store, you have to take with you.
- Oh, man.
Colin: So you need to choose wisely.
I've made a list of essential items that you absolutely have to take with you.
On this list, flint for starting fire, water bottles, water filtration, knife, first aid kit, and GPS.
If you forget any of the essential items, I'm gonna have to give you a 30-minute time penalty for each thing you miss to start the day tomorrow.
- Oh, my gosh.
- I'm gonna start you guys first.
Mindy: Okay, guys.
Colin: 'Kay.
Three, two, one, go!
Mindy: Let's go, guys!
Colin: All right, they're off.
Sergio: Where's the GPS?
Colin: Looks like Mindy's getting the essential water bottles first.
Zulema: Our strategy when we go in is trying to get the essential items first.
Colin: Three, two, one, go!
♪♪ Looks like they got a plan.
- Everyone has their own section of things they needed to get.
So I needed to get the food, Dad was just getting the essentials, Abigail was getting snacks, and then Mom was getting the sleeping gear.
Colin: The Richardsons have only got a couple things in their circle so far.
Zulema: I can't find the flint!
Colin: Looks like the Escobedos are really struggling to find the flint.
Zulema: Not finding the flint is stressing me out because that's gonna be 30 minutes.
[strangled yell] I found it, I found it!
- Seth, check my sleeping bags!
- Only 30 seconds left!
Elaina: Oh, my marshmallows!
Seth: Shoot, we need two bags.
Two bags, two bags!
- Two more.
Seth: GPS, where's GPS?
Colin: All right!
Five, four, three, two, one... time's up, time's up, time's up.
Elaina, is this all food?
- Mmm, yes.
Colin: This is all food.
Oh, wow!
That is quite a haul!
What do we see in there?
We've got canned peaches.
- Those are for me.
- Does that mean you're also gonna carry them on your back?
- As long as it's food, I really don't care.
- All right!
I'm not sure if I brought that much food with me when I crossed all of Antarctica, but uh, let's go over the essential items list.
- It was really stressful, but we made sure that we got the six essential items before anything else.
- Looks like you got all the essential items, so there'll be no time penalties to begin tomorrow.
All right, Richardson family, let's see how you guys did.
- Yeah, our plan was to go ultra light.
We went with tarps instead of tents.
- You've got the GPS, also the first aid kit.
Got the knife right here.
Water filtration system.
We got four water bottles.
And now the last essential item is flint.
- I think I may have grabbed a lighter instead of a flint.
Colin: Ooooo.
- Big mistake.
We had-- yeah... - You grabbed a lighter.
- Sorry, baby.
- So, it was just a mistake.
- He didn't beat us up when we made mistakes, so we're not gon' beat him up when he makes mistakes.
- Unfortunately, you're gonna start with a 30-minute time penalty tomorrow to the Escobedos.
However, there's still a lot of game to be played, so... The multi-day expedition begins tomorrow at sunrise.
Zulema: All right!
We're ready.
Grace: We're ready.
- So my advice to you, pack up your stuff now, get a good night's sleep, and I'm gonna meet you at the trailhead to begin the next phase of this competition.
Mindy: Awesome, we're ready.

♪♪ [wind calmly blowing] ♪♪ Colin: Everyone comes out here for a different reason.
Whether it's the Escobedos, whose dad wants to be able to share his passion for the outdoors with his entire family, or the Richardsons, who know that time is precious and want to be able to cherish every moment as a family.
The path is here and their journey awaits.
Hey, guys!
Escobedos: Hey!
Zulema: How are you?
Colin: This is day one.
Today, the Escobdedos and Richardsons will have to precisely navigate 5 of their 13-mile journey.
They'll race ATVs and scale a massive three-story-high boulder before they fight through loose gravel and thick underbrush on their steep and challenging climb to camp one.
Over the next 72 hours, both families will be racing through this beautiful wilderness to get to the finish line.
Whoever gets there first is gonna be $10,000 richer.
Seth, you forgot the flint in the general store... - Yep.
- ...which cost your entire family 30 minutes.
You guys didn't even take tents.
You still happy with that strategy?
- Yeah, I'm feeling good.
We're gonna be speedy quick and we'll catch up fast.
- Mindy, how are you feeling about everything?
- We're gonna get through this together and we're gonna be strong.
- All right!
You guys ready to find out how this expedition works?
All: Yes!
Colin: Okay.
I'm gonna give you these, which have coordinates to get to your next checkpoint.
Each time you reach one of the waypoints, you'll find another one of these, and that'll navigate you to the next spot.

Zulema: We got it, let's go!
Colin: Good luck, you guys!

Abigail: [laughing] Seth: Aw man, it was killin' us to watch them kinda fade off into the distance.
Zulema: I think we're gonna win.
We're gonna win.
Colin: The families must make a quick half-mile hike to the first checkpoint where they'll find a new mode of transportation.
Elaina: Look how pretty it is!
Sergio: Never used one of these GPS's before.
It's a first time for everything.
- Let me see.
- You see?
Elaina: You have to keep moving for it to work.
If you stop-- Sergio: You gotta keep moving.
Elain: Yeah, you can't stop; you have to keep moving for it to work.
♪♪ - All right, it's been 30 minutes!
- We're ready.
Colin: 'Kay.
Three, two, one, go!
Stacy: Let's go, let's go!
Colin: All right, good luck you guys!
Stacy: I say we take it to the run.
Seth: 'Kay, you ready?
Stacy: Yeah, just this.
Watch your steps.
Seth: Everybody comfortable with this?
Abigail: Yep.
Stacy: Oh, we totally got this.
- Ah, I'm running a little bit out of breath.
Elaina: Already?
Sergio: Don't talk to much.
Don't-- don't talk too much.
Do this.
[deep inhale] Big breaths.
Come on.
Mindy: [cheering] Sergio: I haven't driven a ATV before like this one, but there's a first time for everything.
[engines revving] Colin: The families will have to race their ATVs across the uneven landscape and navigate to the next checkpoint, where another challenge awaits.
Stacy: Watch the rocks.
Bad ankles kill us.
Seth: How you doin', Mom?
Stacy: I'm doing great.
Seth: I think our strategy's paying off.
We went with super ultralight packs so we could really pick up the pace.
I mean, my girls are killin' it out there.
Stacy: Let's take the car.
[laughing] - If we can run on this trail, we're gonna do a lot better on that thing.
[engine revving] Stacy: Woooohoohoo!
[engines roaring] [cheering] Elaina: Dad!
Sergio: This ATV, I thought it was gonna be hard to drive.
But it's pretty easy.
[engine roaring] Mindy: It's kind of scary being up here.
We're on some sharp turns and it looks like we're gonna tip, but you know what, I'm gonna have some trust in my dad right now.
[engines humming] Stacy: That's it, keep comin'.
Now look.
Woo!
Woo, woo, woo!
Seth is doing amazing.
He's killin' it.
Seth rode 4-wheelers all growin' up, so he's really comfortable.
So I'm really confident in him maneuvering around the boulders then we roll up on the cows, and they're beautiful, and wanna pause, but we can't 'cause we gotta go.
Super fun.
Grace: Dad, go faster!
[engine roaring] Mindy: Dad, turn over!
Turn, Dad, turn!
Zulema: Wow.
Mindy: Let's do it!
Zulema: Let's go find it.
Sergio: Come on, come on.
Zulema: Where is it?
- I think it's up there.
♪♪ Elaina: Only one has to climb and free the next clue.
Go, go, go, go, go!

We have faith in you, Dad.
Sergio: Reminding me of my old days when I used to be an iron worker.
I used to climb 300, 400 feet in the air.
When I used to be young.
[laughing] Mindy: Come on, you did this for years, you can do this.

Elaina: Come on, Dad.
Don't fall.

I really don't know what's gonna happen.
This is really hard for me.

Elaina: Agh, there's a branch in my face!
I've never been in an environment like this.
Nonetheless, my mother... - [laughing] - Kinda been a challenge for the both of us.

Elaina: I think I'm gonna get the hang of it, but right now I'm trying to figure out what to do.

Mindy: No, we're going the wrong way.

Zulema: Our GPS, for some reason, got stuck.

Zulema: And it wouldn't move.
Elaina: Okay, well we're just wasting time, so we need to take the other way already.
Zulema: So I think we lost... I don't know, Ten minutes.
Sergio: Yup.
- [grunt] Colin: Getting acclimated to the wilderness is proving to be a slow process for Elaina.
Mindy: I think it's up there!

Colin: And even seasoned hiker, Mindy is running into trouble.
Mindy: This is probably one of the steepest things I've ever climbed.
Let's hope I'm taking my family in the right direction, or I just climbed up here for no reason.

Hopefully she'll get us out of this situation.
Colin: With the support and trust of her sister, Mindy leads the family onwards.
But the Richardsons have seized the opportunity and gained crucial time.

I would say that the frustration is that they passed us up even though we had a 30-minute delay.
It's because y'all took 15 minutes stopping and all this, when we could have just kept a steady pace.

- I think we have two choices right now to make as a family.
We either go up and down hills or take a little bit of a longer route and not lose our energy going up and down.

Colin: Out here in the field, there's more than one way to reach our destination.
The Richardsons decide to take a slightly more difficult route in exchange for a shorter distance, while Mindy Escobedo plots a slightly longer, but easier trek to the checkpoint.
Grace: Yeah, they're up there.
I think we can get to this point way quicker.
They took the long way around.
Seth: Easy goes it!
Abigail: [gasp] I found it!

I think it was a team effort, though.

- Grace, I think she did a good job of leading us.

Stacy: What about the crow flying?
Colin: Gambling on the shortest path has paid off for the Richardson family, gaining them the lead.
The next checkpoint will take the families on a one-mile hike up the mountain's ridgeline.
Elaina: Y'all are doing a good job!
Seth: Y'all are doing great, girls.
Elaina: We'll see you at the next one.
Seth: See you at the next one.
Stacy: Elbow, elbow, elbow!
Seth: Looking good.
Elaina: Even though the Richardsons passed us, it didn't really phase me because I know we still have a lot of time left, and as long as we keep communicating and working together, I know we can still win this.

Seth: My heart was thrilled to introduce them to something I've loved my whole life.
As a dad, couldn't be much prouder.

Being out here on this trek, just being able to see my daughters grow and become into the women that God has made 'em to be, it's really a dad's dream.

Seth: In the busyness of our hectic schedules, we don't have these kind of milestones to-- to mark our growth.

- [happy screaming] Colin: With the Richardsons having reached camp, every passing minute it takes the Escobedos to arrive is a minute they'll start behind tomorrow morning.

Sergio: I'm carrying my wife's backpack and mine.
And myself, I'm feeling a little bit tired.
But I just keep moving.

Mindy: I knew my dad was strong, and I guess if he can pick me up, he can definitely pick up some bags, so I'm just really proud of my dad.
He's really making an effort to push us forward to the finish line.
Colin: The Escobedo family may be trailing, but Sergio shows the importance of working together as a family, keeping the family spirits high and impressing his daughters at the same time.

Colin: After conquering 5 of the 13 miles, day one comes to an end.
By working together and trusting one another, the Richardson family were able to overcome their 30-minute deficit and arrive first to camp.
For the Escobedos, Elaina and Zulema have been able to find new comfort in this unfamiliar environment, but they still find themselves 21 minutes behind.

Stacy: Being a photographer, I'd have these pictures that I kind of have in my mind.
And then I just see Abigail in the lead, Grace right behind, and I was like, "This is so cool!

That was probably definitely a "seize the moment."
I'll never forget that.
Abigail: Uh, I don't think the 30 minutes slowed us down.
I feel like it pushed us more and I'm thankful that we-- - Yeah, that was all part of my-- my master plan.

As a family in all, me and Elaina and my dad have been really, really impressed with my mom and how much she's been able to keep up with us.
Mm, I think we're gonna have to redo that.

Mindy: My mom's motto is to never give up.
We're happy to see that she's not giving up because if she gives up, then she's lying to us about her entire life.

- I've had knee trouble most of my life.

I was in a skiing accident when I was in tenth grade.
So it's nothing new, it just I really worked it hard yesterday.
Grace: I'm a little bit worried about my mom's knee because if it's getting to a point where it's real bad, I don't want to push her to do anything.
I just wanna make sure we take the easiest route possible for her.
♪♪ Colin: This is day two.
It's going to be an exhausting five miles where families will face a grueling 19-degree climb to the summit, followed by a nearly 2,000-foot drop in elevation.
And then they'll take to water against the strong headwind on paddleboards before reaching their second campsite.

I'd be toast if I had to go down and then up somethin' real, real steep.

I'm just really proud of Elaina being able to stay ahead of me and my dad when this is our terrain and my mom just being able to catch up with us.
Zulema: I feel stronger than my first day.
I really am-amaze myself.
Maybe my body's just saying, "Hey, you can do it."
Elaina: Since I've never experienced climbing up a mountain, this is really hard for me.
But I do think I can pull through.
All that glimmers is indeed gold and holds the key to your next clue.

You know, it's a little harder on your knees and ankles, but gravity is definitely your friend.

It's been remarkable to see our girls just kinda come into their own.

You know, Grace is just-- from a very early age, just a natural-born leader.

Colin: For the next leg, the families must paddle over a mile through choppy waters, facing harsh winds as they attempt to make it to their campsite together.

When we grabbed our lifejackets and started running to the shore, I had a strong suspicion that I'd be, uh, taking a drink.
I'm a big boy and that was a little paddleboard for me.

Elaina: Oh, we get to touch the water!
Mindy: I'm really excited that we're getting to do this.
It's definitely a new experience for us.

So my dad, he came and I grabbed on to the red rope and then he started paddling.
That's what got us back on track.
Colin: Like every leg of this journey, families must finish together.
So staying close on the water and helping each other becomes even more important.
Mindy: Me and my mom are leading the pack right now.
I just turned back and Elaina is completely going the opposite way!
Sergio: No, no, no, no, no!
- My dad is having to go get her.
Elaina: Oh, my gosh!

Elaina: Good thing my dad tethered me to his board because otherwise I'd probably still be out there.

So it was really, really fun to see her be the first one to reach that checkpoint.

I was so pumped.

Colin: Today was back and forth as both families showed their strengths and their weaknesses.
The Richardson family learned that the most direct way isn't always the best way for the team.
And the Escobedos showed that working together in a new situation is the fastest way for them.
And along the way, they both gained a mutual respect and kinship for the competitors on the trail... [laughing] ...spilling over to their campsite as a storm blows in.

Colin: And after two days of roughing it, the Escobedos are only 17 minutes behind and still in high spirits.

- I'm stretching because I feel, like, stiff.
I feel a little bit stiff in my arms 'cause of the paddling yesterday.

Zulema: So it looks like we're still kinda, we have energy in us, so... think we can do it.

Today's gonna be the day that decides who wins.

Zulema: These are actually mountains.
They look like hills, but once you're up here, they're mountains.
♪♪ Mindy: I really feel like I'm experienced now to like, climb Mount Everest.
I almost just wanna run.
Elaina: Do it, I dare you.
Mindy: Okay, go.

Sergio: Mimi, don't burn yourself out!
Zulema: No, don't do that!
Sergio: [laughs] The girls surprise me.
I thought I was the best, but... they got more energy than me.
Elaina: I'm very proud of myself for climbing all of these mountains.
It feels like I've been out here for 30 days.
Mindy: [laughs] Elaina: It's been a pretty cool experience.
Sergio: [laughs] Mindy: There, do you see it?

Stacy: We come over this crest, and we see Colin in the distance, and I cannot tell you how excited I am.
Seth: Colin!

Seth: We did it!
Colin: You're at the finish line, but you haven't finished.
What you need to do: raise your family flag and get it standing straight up in the air.

All four of us are very different, yet we're a part of the same family.
Colin: Abigail and Grace are workin' together, try to put these pieces together, make sure they fit.

Seth: Over the course of this trek, just contributing our own different strenghts to really reach the same goal.
Colin: Everyone, everyone's got a hand on it.
Seth: Just like raising that flag.

Stacy: I feel like this trek has really allowed me to see things in my girls that I wouldn't necessarily be looking for.
They just showed up on the trail, so I'm really thankful for that.
In the busyness of life, I might not see those things.
I'll never forget this, this time together.
Seth: Watchin' these girls push, bleed, make decisions, seein' Momma with her knee pushin' through and givin' it all she's got for her family, has just been amazing.
Grace: It's super cool that we got to kinda be leaders in our own family, and we get to always just remember this time where we both conquered this together.
Seth: We, we can replace a lot of things in life, [emotionally] but you can't replace family, um... Abigail: Don't cry.
Seth: Um, so just, the memories, the time together, worth way more than $10,000.
We only get one shot at this life.
And, uh, what a great time together.

I think, as a family, being able to connect with each other out in nature, seeing what God has put on this Earth for us to enjoy has been an amazing, amazing ride for us.

Grace: That was so good.
Mindy: I'm so happy for you!
Grace: You did so awesome.
I really feel like we've connected and they're our friends, now.
I'm just really excited we got to do this together.

- We got along so well with the Richardsons, and I'm just so happy either one of us got the chance to win this prize.
Sergio: To me, it's not about the prize.
Colin: Yeah.
Sergio: It's about the challenge, to prove ourselves, that we can just push forward.
With my wife, she's a superwoman.
She, she proved me that she can do it.
Mindy: Win or lose, we got a great prize, we were able to spend this quality time together, so we pushed each other to limits that we never thought we could reach as a family, and I think that's the best part of all of this.
- I would have never climbed a mountain if it wouldn't have been for this competition, so I think that's pretty cool.
- Maybe one day we'll do Mount Everest.

- Hey Colin, there's one more thing that our family has kinda talked about that we really feel, um, pretty strongly about.

Stacy: Um... when I first graduated college, I worked with abused teenage girls in foster care, and so, when y'all shared that, um... we'd like to donate some money to your foundation.

We just wanted to return the favor.
