Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell today marks exactly three months since Sayreville councilwoman unistrom4 was shot and killed outside her home a gunman ambushed the car of the 30-year-old mother and first-term Republican but the case remains unsolved no arrests have been made investigators have shared little information and the dermovore family remains in the dark they've asked the State Attorney General's office to take over the investigation but her loved ones are fearful they'll never have answers former State assemblyman John wozneski is representing the family and joins me now assemblyman it's good to see you I know this case has been very frustrating for the family are we any closer to some answers well we're not any closer to knowing about any answers whether or not the Middlesex County Prosecutors or the state attorney general or any law enforcement agency actually is close to having answers we don't know because they are not providing any of that information to the family and why is that um is there a suspicion that perhaps there there's a lead we know that the prosecutors said there's no immediate threat to the community typically we don't hear a bold statement like that unless there's at least a suspect you're right they um prediction or the pronouncement by the prosecutor that there's no danger to the public at Large means that they have some conclusions they've drawn some basis of thought that they have an idea of who or what circumstances may have precipitated this homicide that said they have not shared any of that information with the family and whether or not they have for instance a particular individual in mind or they have a a sketch of the kind of person that could be involved we don't know the distinction between that as well well you facilitated two meetings if I'm correct between the family and the Middlesex County prosecutor's office what's your level of confidence with how this case is being investigated well look uh I don't have a ton of background in investigating homicides so I will certainly defer to those who have done this more than once uh that being said I am troubled that there seem to be some investigatory lapses uh Eunice had a Borough issued cell phone uh that the prosecutor's office did not get around to looking for or asking about for almost two months after the homicide that seems to me a basic piece of investigatory information that you would ask for in day one uh that you would go through the victims uh personal space to see if there are any clues that would be there and it doesn't appear that that happened either now maybe there's a reason for that and and maybe that reason's not something they can share with the family right now but understand from their perspective their daughter Eunice was a rising political figure in Middlesex County in cerebral and she in a relatively otherwise safe the suburban community was gunned down outside her home after coming back from grocery shopping it's alarming uh it's unprecedented and it seems to be dragging and that is a source of enormous frustration for a mom and dad who lost a daughter A Nicole their daughter lost the mother Peter lost his wife it's a tragedy all around yeah I mean shocking really for the entire Community for the state and of course for her loved ones has there been any response from the Attorney General's office and is this length of time that the investigation is taking somewhat typical given what they have to work with well you know what's typical right uh in in the instance of Eunice's homicide and the the three months that have transpired uh I hear a lot of references to the Utah homicide on a college campus and how the prosecutor's office in that case kept very quiet for a long period of time because they had somebody in mind could that be an analogy to What's Happening Here could be uh could it also be that they really have no idea and they're at a dead end that's also a possibility without any specific facts it's really hard to draw one conclusion over the other that being said that doesn't provide any comfort doesn't provide any Solace to the families who have lost somebody so important to their lives and they're just looking for answers yeah and I'm sure the family is wondering you know with the Advent of gosh everybody has a ring camera it seems on their front door you've got the cameras by the parkway there you would think that there's some type of video or at least you would hope that the prosecutors have to assist them in this but I think generally just the tight-lipped nature of it is what's gotten everyone on edge I think that when you look at a complex like Camelot where the murder took place has very robust video surveillance for security purposes right across the street is an elementary school in this day and age every elementary school has pretty robust video surveillance as you've correctly pointed out the Garden State Parkway as video surveillance and so everybody's cell phone pings a cell tower and provides identification of who is in the area and who shouldn't be in the area so there seems to be a lot of data out there there seems to be a basis to obtain a an answer just it's not there right now yeah I'm also just curious the mayor there in town hasn't been to Council meetings is not seeking re-election says that there were some type of a threat received related to this what's the significance of that well I think in the context of everything that's going on in cerebral uh you you certainly couldn't blame an elected official to be concerned uh the Democratic chairman is indicted on bribery charges uh when the indictment is unsealed uh you realize that it is a far more ranging uh type of criminal Enterprise that he was involved in uh on top of that you have this homicide and then this threatening letter and you know it should be pointed out that this letter came to the mayor's inbox so to speak her mailbox at the municipal building it was taken from her mailbox without her permission by investigators and she's actually never been able to see a copy of it only to be have it described to her as a threatening letter which only heightens the concerns right if everybody tells you you received a threatening letter but we're not going to let you see it uh that only raises suspicions and concerns yeah it certainly leaves more room for speculation just lastly how is the family holding up and in particular her daughter Nicole that interview with the Associated Press she she came across very brave very poised for an 11 year old who's just gone through something so traumatic how are they doing well she's a remarkable young lady she clearly is handling this very traumatic situation with a great deal of bravery and stoicism uh I I hope that over the long run she's able to get the type of advice and guidance and counsel that will enable her to internalize this and and move Beyond it right this is something that happened to her at a young age unless the right steps are taken there's always a chance that this is a trauma that will be with her for a long time but right now she seems to be handling it very well but she misses her mom terribly she had a very great relationship with her mom and uh you know just to hear her talk and talk about how she viewed her mom and her mom's attitude towards the world uh echoed very much by the father you know Eunice was always very optimistic very bright very uh bubbly uh and and the one thing that stood out in the Associated Press article is where Nicole admitted that in those last weeks she was feeling down something that was not typical so there was something on her mind was it something that ultimately resulted in her murder it's possible but we will never know uh until the investigation is Thoroughly completed yeah such an insightful uh you know takeaway from her too and we know our kids are so observant in that way well I've been thinking of her family and her daughter will continue praying for them and um thank you so much thank you [Music]
