On this International Women's Day Putin sought to placate Russian wives and mothers, mindful of their central role in Russian society. Historian Olesya Khromeychuk, director of the Ukrainian Institute London, lost her brother in the 2014 Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine, while Afghan activist Orzala Nemat has twice survived Taliban takeovers of her native Afghanistan. They join the program.
