Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] A number of years ago this apartment became available and I bought it very much with the idea it was going to be used for display purposes.
The first thing that came in is this Richard Jolly glass piece.
The piece in the fireplace is a commission from Mark Marioni.
There are two chairs and a pair of foot stools from Mary Little.
The three urns are Andy Paiko a glass artist likes to encase found objects.
There's work from everybody from David Ellsworth to Mark Lindquist to Michelle Holzapfel.
The fish bench with a very woeful expression is Judy McKie and the Kevin O'Dwyre is me over there, that's Fleur that's Fleur, okay.
One of the things that you learn about Fleur and about so many collectors is that it's very personal.
Collectors develop relationships with the artists and they become advocates for that artist.\ There's a local glass artist Tim Tate and we discussed making a small light fixture.
We thought it might be kind of fun to do violets and cicadas and then it has a very small bird's nest on the top.
As a collector I just say that collections aren't always just about the object itself.
We don't just see the piece, we see the artist we hear their voices.
We've been to their studios, their homes.
Many of them have been to our home.
It's become almost like a family, as we, as time has gone.
The most pieces we have of an artist is from Mark Nance.
He's from Colchester, Connecticut and does exquisite work and I tell people on a scale from one to ten, with ten being the highest quality, his work is a thirteen.
He figured out a technique for drilling holes on a rim and put in silver wire no splintering, not one is off balance.
It's just perfect.
Hoss Haley, who is a metal artist ran a class at Penland.
He got a hold of a railroad spike to make blades and after the class he took the pieces back and then he turned the blades into bottle openers.
I'd like to tell you about this piece by Jacques Vesery one of the foremost woodcarvers and what is so attractive is the Trompe-l'œil effect.
This is a shell that looks like a basket and the carving is hyper realistic.
The illusion of a basket is formed smaller weave up at the top, larger at the biggest part of this shell and smaller down here.
His work is so exceptional.
Collecting has been sort of an adventure.
They're inanimate objects but the people who make them are part of them.
