Clive: Ma'am, I'm sorry to bother you so late, but, uh, it's urgent.
[Car door opens] Rachita: Who were the victims?
How come you couldn't say on the phone?
Clive: Our female victim's a nurse from the hospital.
The male, Frank Chapman.
Kwesi: Ma'am, his car's just over here.
It's covered in blood on the inside.
It was found with the engine still running and the doors unlocked.
Forensics officer: Ma'am.
Most of the blood's located in and around the driver's side.
-Is there any sign of a weapon?
-No, ma'am.
Also, no blood spatter or gun residue.
Windows are all intact, there's no damage to the interior or exterior of the vehicle.
Nothing to suggest an injury occurred inside.
So he was bleeding before he got into the car.
Forensics officer: If it's his blood, then, yes, most likely.
We'll get the samples off to the lab immediately.
OK, thanks.
Clive, can you get Liam to get CCTV from around here?
Clive: Ma'am.
What about the bodies?
Inside, ma'am, being prepped for the PM.
OK, we need to get ahead of this before the press get wind.
What about the rest of the Chapmans?
Yet to be informed.
OK, this has to be led by us and not by them.
We can't risk them taking matters into their own hands.
[Police radio, indistinct] Clive: The Don himself, Frank Chapman.
Even stone cold, you wouldn't cross him.
♪ Sylvia: Looking at the wounds, this first shot would've definitely been close, although no vital organs were hit.
There would have been some internal bleeding, but wasn't necessarily fatal.
♪ So, more clumsy, maybe.
What about the second?
Much more targeted.
Which is consistent with a drive-by.
Sylvia: The shooter hit the central mass, lots of vital organs-- lungs, the heart.
They definitely wanted to kill him.
Frank would have died within minutes.
They got some balls of steel going for the top man.
Who in their right mind would risk going to war with the Chapmans?
♪ [Theme music playing] ♪ You're aware that Carly has accepted a DS position over in East Mids?
Yeah, I encouraged her to go for it.
Well, we need all the manpower we can get, so a new DC will be joining you, and it's immediate start-- DC Charlene Ellis.

Professional Standards have already formally briefed you on the conclusion of the investigation into your relationship with DCI Martyn Hunter.
Hiroka: Which clears DI Ray of any criminality.
Beardsmore: Yes, and although no evidence of criminality was found, two other matters remain outstanding: the allegation of bullying a junior colleague and your interpersonal issues with management.
However, it has been decided to deal with these matters by issuing words of advice.
[Paper rustles] You are to avoid close personal relationships which may result in conflicts of interest, to respect the authority of officers in a senior rank-- Can we pause for a moment, please, Superintendent?
With regards to DI Ray respecting the authority of officers in a senior rank, perhaps senior officers should be mindful of racial profiling, as well as certain lines of questionin' which display a level of stereotypin'.
For example, assumptions about the languages an officer speaks and where they originate from.
Best not to dwell.
I was expected to be a certain type of officer, and when I didn't fit the assumptions that were made about me, I was deemed to be a failure.
I think there's been a misunderstanding.
Beardsmore: I am genuinely sorry you've been feeling upset.
That was never our intention.
Perhaps... it would be helpful to us all if we were to look forward.
It's not just our building that's new.

[Distant chatter] ♪ [Door unlocks, creaks] ♪ Beardsmore: We need you to work with us, DI Ray, to think like us.
♪ [Computer mouse clicks] ♪ Rachita: Our nurse's name is Megan Parks.
She was newly qualified, coming to the end of an 18-hour shift.
Charlene: So, she was most probably in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Rachita: It's possible she was a target, but based on our second victim, I think we can safely assume she was caught in the crossfire.
We also have a potential eyewitness.
It looks like he could be a porter.
We need to track him down and speak to him ASAP.
Kwesi, can you get onto that, please?
I'd like to help with that, Ma'am.
Rachita: Frank Chapman was clearly trying to get to medical help when he was intercepted.
Can we get hold of Chapman's phone records?
Already put in a request, ma'am.
Clive: Well, someone like Chapman will have tons of burner phones.
There's no chance you're gonna find 'em all.
What do we know about the Chapmans?
They're loan sharks who operate several pawn broker shops in the area.
Clive: Well, let's just call them what they are, ma'am-- an organised crime family.
Kwesi: Mm-hmm.
Clive: Frank Chapman's the Midlands' very own Teflon Don.
Heh!
See, he's been on Serious and Organised Crimes' radar for years, but no charges against him have ever stuck.
You know, he's "clean."
All the Chapmans are.
There's probably a few foot soldiers doing time, but the Chapmans, they operate a "no grass" rule, and it works.
Rachita: OK. Forensics indicate that Frank was bleeding before he got into his car, so where did the first shot take place, and how and why was he able to get into his car and drive away?
[Door bursts open] Officer: Armed police!

[Police radios, indistinct] ♪ Crime really does pay.
[Scoffs] ♪ Rachita: Could someone come and bag this phone up, please?
[Distant chatter] ♪ Clive: This must be Dave and Suzie Chapman as kids.
Yeah, their daughter Suzie's been abroad for a few months, somewhere in Spain.
Yeah, it's Frank Chapman's name listed as owner of all the businesses, but word is his son Dave Chapman oversees the day-to-day running of 'em.
Well, he delegates, anyway.
What about their mum?
Oh, Yvette Chapman?
Ah, she passed away a few years back.
♪ [Indistinct police radio chatter continues] ♪ In here!
♪ The blood spatter suggests he was shot around this area, but there's no other sign of a blood trail.
They must've been stood pretty close.
I mean, there's no sign of a struggle and no evidence of a break-in.
Clive: Well, maybe they were invited in.
Or they had a key.
If it was a rival, surely they would keep their distance, kill him on neutral ground, not in his own home.
It feels too risky.
Whoever was driving that car clearly meant business.
Why did the first attempt fail?
♪ How long, do you think, between here and the hospital?
That time of night, 20 minutes, I reckon.
Rachita: So, what happened between the first shot that took place here and the second shot at the hospital?
Would you pour a drink for someone who might want to kill you?
[Mobile phone ringing] Rachita: Kwesi?
We tracked the eyewitness from the footage, ma'am.
His name's Michael Adoje.
He works as a night porter, only now he's a patient.
Claims he had a run-in with a member of his family and doesn't want to take it further.
Ma'am, someone's done a number on him.
It's pointless.
Whoever did it has made sure he's not gonna talk.
Sorry, ma'am.
♪ What is it?
We're too late.
[Monitor beeping] Rachita: They got to him.
It's started.
♪ [Distant dog barking] ♪ Will your sister be joining us, Mr. Chapman?
She's on her way over from Costa Daurada.
[Sighs] Mr. and Mrs. Chapman, I think it might be best if we didn't discuss the details of our investigation in front of your daughter.
Joey, love, why don't you go play in your room?
I know this is about Pa. Do your tablet for a bit.

Do you have any knowledge of what your father Frank was doing or who he might have been with between 9 p.m. and the time of the incident?
Dave: Nope.
[Door closes upstairs] When was the last time you saw your dad?
[Inhales deeply, sighs] Mid to late afternoon.
I went round his to talk through some accounts.
Do you know if he had any plans afterwards?
No idea.
[Key unlocks front door] [Door opens and shuts] Girl: Dad?
Amy, my eldest.
Dave: They're here to check our alibis, love.
Rachita: I'm afraid we're obliged to rule you out.
We were asleep, in bed.
Joey gets bad dreams, bless her, so I was in with her... and this one sleeps through everythin'.
Rachita: Is there anyone that can verify where you all were?
We were at home, asleep, in bed.
Has your dad mentioned anything out of the ordinary recently?
Any conflicts, anyone who may have had a grudge to bear?
Well...tsk, there were heaps of folks who didn't approve of the way he did business.
You know, at this stage, Mr. Chapman, any information would be helpful, no matter how insignificant it may seem-- Dave: Dad was clean.
Do you know, as well as the nurse who lost her life, there is a porter in a pretty bad way in hospital.
-[Sighs] -We've tried talking to him, but he's point-blank refusing to speak to us.
Any chance you could leave us in peace and get on with finding out who murdered my dad, Officer?
♪ [Distant phone ringing] Rachita: The hospital have confirmed that our porter has two broken ribs, fractured collarbone, concussion, and internal bleeding.
Charlene: There's no CCTV coverage of the attack.
No witnesses have come forward.
It's a dead end.
I want to know who Frank was dealing with before he died.
Let's start looking deeper into Chapman businesses.
We need specifics: their client base, who are they doing regular business with.
Kwesi: We're working on Dave's list of business numbers and trackin' 'em.
Rachita: Good, and let's get a profile of their staff as well.
[No audible dialogue] [Unmutes TV] Woman on TV: Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of Megan Parks.
Megan was a well-loved member of the community, embarking on a promising career in the NHS.
Her loss is a deep tragedy for the whole city.
I want to assure you that our colleagues over at West Central Police are... Clive: "Colleagues"?
Amara: working around the clock to ensure the offenders of this violent and senseless crime are brought to justice.
They themselves acknowledge their past failures and are committed to tackling this investigation with a fresh approa-- [Mutes TV] [Indistinct chatter and distant phones ringing] ♪ Mr. and Mrs.
Parks?
My name is DI Rachita Ray... ♪ [Key unlocking door] [Door creaks] [Sighs, locks door] [Mobile phone beeps and vibrates] [Microwave oven humming] ♪ [Microwave bell dings] ♪ [Text notification chimes, phone vibrates] ♪ [Police radio, indistinct] Forensics officer: It's the exact make and model involved in the shooting.
Forensic evidence will be limited.

Clive: Thanks, mate.
Ma'am, that was Liam.
The vehicle was first picked up near a parade of shops in the Jewellery Quarter, about 200 yards from one of the Chapman premises.
It was then caught in Hockley heading south.
After that, we lose it, and he's not been able to verify any other details connected to the vehicle.
Council have really ... us, turning these cameras off.
Rachita: Tell me about it.
[Clive sighs] I know someone who could help.
He's an ex-youth worker.
He knows everything that happens round that way.
Might be worth a visit.
Let's go.
[Police radio chatter continues] ♪ Joey: Dad, she's here!
[Gasps, chuckles] Are you too old for hugs these days?

[Camera shutter clicks] Kwesi: Family reunion?

♪ Clive: How's Beardsmore been with you since you've come back?
Rachita: I'm "crucial to the continued development of West Central."
[Chuckles] Wish I bloody was.

Uh, but seriously, after what they put you through, I'd have told them all to do one.

[Both chuckle] Clive: After you, ma'am.

Rachita: Hardeep, we're investigating a double murder that occurred outside West Central Hospital.

[Sighs] I know he was good at sorting things... when people don't want your lot involved, like.

Hardeep: Well, non-whites.

You know, this isn't your average gang drive-by.
Someone out there has pushed things too far, and it's only a matter of time before there's a retaliation.
The sooner we find Frank Chapman's killer, the sooner we can douse whatever it is that is about to catch fire.
I don't want to get involved.
Rachita: You know, Megan had nothing to do with this.
Clive: Ma'am, look-- Rachita: She was an innocent bystander.
Clive told me how much you do for young people in the area.
I know how much you care.
This is our chance to prevent more tragedies like this from happening.
♪ There's been talk, you know?

Hardeep: They've come over from Leicester.
They're all in the same sort of trade, and they've been...crossing over into Chapman territory.
The jewellery trade?
Yeah.
And the rest.
They ran things over there.

[Sighs] The Mochanis.
♪ [Distant car horns honking, siren wailing] I spoke to an ex-colleague from Leicester Constabulary who's had dealings with the eldest child of the Mochani family, Ravinder Mochani, known as Rav.
A few years ago, he was done for possession of a firearm, but as he was a first-time offender, he only did two years.
We also spoke to an old friend of Clive's who's an ex-youth worker, who confirms that since the Mochanis have been on the scene, tensions between the Chapmans and the Mochanis have been brewing.
It sounds like the beginning of a turf war.
What are you thinking?
With your permission, ma'am, I'd like to bring the Mochanis in for questioning.
Is there really enough evidence?
We can't work on hearsay, DI Ray.
Previous failings, I mean, we have to be so careful when we're profiling.
Frank Chapman's probably built up a number of enemies over the years, but none with the confidence to carry out his murder.
This family may be key.
What about surveillance, then?
[Sighs] I'm happy for you to put in for a surveillance authority, but I would urge you to make sure they have something to do with it first.
[Car doors close, footsteps approach] Man: You're actually on time.

[Entry chime sounds] Woman: Do you have an appointment?
Well, my name is DI Ray, and this is DS Bottomley.
We're in the area making some enquiries and, uh, we were wondering if we could speak to the proprietors?
I'm Sharan Mochani.
This is a family business.
What's it regarding, officers?
Well, we're wondering if any of you recognise this vehicle.
No, I don't.
What about you?
Afraid not, Officer.
Sharan: Would you mind telling us exactly what this is about?
We're investigating a serious incident, and we're simply trying to get as much information as possible.
What's the incident?
Frank Chapman was murdered around 11 p.m. on Sunday, and a young nurse was caught in the crossfire.
Rav: We've heard, uh-- Sharan: But we've never had any dealings with the man.
But you must know about him.
What's your full name?
[Distant siren wailing] Detective Inspector Rachita Ray.
♪ Interesting they sent you to talk to us, Detective Inspector Ray.
[Mobile phone ringing] Excuse me.
I have to take this.
[Ringing continues] Now, if you don't mind--heh!-- you're not great for business.
[Chuckles] [Computer mouse clicking] [Distant office phone rings, door opens] [Distant footsteps, door closes] [Sighs] [Distant phone rings] ♪ Rachita: There's a strong possibility that Frank Chapman's murder is turf-related.
Hardeep seemed pretty sure about what's been going on, but we need to make sure that we follow all lines of enquiry.
Frank had enemies coming out of his ears, and Dave Chapman even alluded to the fact.
Liam: Ma'am, I've tracked the Mochanis' vehicles as you requested, and on the evening of the incident, Sharan, Priya, and Rav's were all parked up at a family-run Persian restaurant in town called Kish.
Can you get in touch with the restaurant and see if they can get any CCTV footage of 'em?
Liam: Already on it, ma'am.
Rachita: Clive, Kwesi, let's carry on covert surveillance of both the Chapmans and the Mochanis.
Charlene, I want you to carry on investigating the Chapman shops, see when Frank last visited them, and try and get anything you can out of the staff.
Charlene: Ma'am.
Liz: Frank was a really good boss, you know.
Charlene: In what way?
Well, uh...
I've been here 30 years, and... not once has he missed me birthday.
And when was the last time you saw him?
Sunday, it was.
[Sighs] [Muffled dance music playing inside passing car] He came in for a meeting.
What is it?

When he was leaving, uh, saw him having an argument with a fella.
Can you remember what he looked like?
Uh... he had a Sandwright's uniform on.
Charlene: The supermarket?
Liz: Yeah.
I recognised it 'cause I do me food shop there.
Manager: OK, just a tick.
[Sighs] Where are we?

Uh... [Classical piano music playing quietly] Manager: Uh, Karen, Jermaine, Lisa, oh, just a tick.
♪ Uh, Sohail, Sam, Graham, Vicky... ♪ Rachita: Hey!

Rachita: Police!

♪ [Woman groans] Man: Hey, you ... idiot!

♪ Charlene: Stop!
[Man groans] [Grunts] Charlene: Ah!

Rachita: Are you OK, DC Ellis?
Charlene: Mm-hmm.
Rachita: I am arresting you for assaulting a police officer and on the suspicion of murder of Frank Chapman.
You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something you later rely on in court.

♪ Rachita: Aled... we have an eyewitness who claims they saw you arguing with Frank Chapman outside his Pawn Haven shop on the day he was murdered.
Rachita: Can you tell me what you were arguing about?
Why did you run from us?
What have you done, Aled?
Nothin'.
It's not the first time you've been in custody, is it?

[Papers rustling] How do you know Frank Chapman?
Did you work for him?

Rachita: This is a murder investigation, Aled.

Aled: They kept upping the vig, saying I owed 'em 25 grand, made me do drops for 'em, burnt my scooter, went to my mum's house, scared the ... out of her!
It's how they operate!
They shut you into debt and then they ... up your whole life!
They're all ...!
They deserve everything they get.

And what happened after the argument?
I went to the pub and I got ...-faced.
Loads of people saw me.
Never take on the Chapmans.

How did it go, anyway?
Charged with assaulting a police officer, but multiple witnesses corroborate his alibi for the time of the shootin'.
Rachita: Liam, where are we at with the forensics on Frank's car?
Uh, there are some other prints on the back-seat door handles, but none that match any on our database.
The blood is all his.
Also, forensics are back from the whisky glasses in his kitchen.
One had traces of saliva which match his, but the other had no trace of DNA.
So whoever it was didn't even take a sip?
There is something else, though, ma'am.
I've been studying the CCTV from the Persian restaurant, like you said, and look at this.
[Types] Rav Mochani leaves around 2218 and then doesn't return.
Sharan and Priya are still at the restaurant 'til 1:45 a.m. and then, ANPR picked up his vehicle half a mile away from West Central Hospital.
Rav Mochani has form.
We know he likes to mark his territory.
He's used scare tactics in Leicester in the past.
He has a lot to gain from taking on the Chapmans, and now, he potentially doesn't have an alibi.
Look into Rav Mochani's phone records and movements in the days leading up to Chapman's murder.
I'm gonna check in with Clive, see who's shown up for Frank.
[Typing] ♪ Rachita: Kwesi, are you still at the Mochani shop?
Yep.
