Jackie: Do you three want to play with us?
Yadina: Uh huh!
Xavier: Oh, yes!
Yadina: Sure!
But you should know, I'm on the t-ball team back home.
(throwing grunt) ♪ Xavier: Brad!
Over here!
Brad: (throwing grunt) Xavier: Wha-woah -- ugh!
(ball bounces) Never mind!
Jackie: (chuckles) I'll get it!
Sarah: (unfriendly) Hey!
My Dad says you're not allowed on OUR lawn!
Jackie: But, Sarah, I was just- ♪ (ominous music) ♪ (angry grunt) Hmm!!
Jackie: (frustrated sigh) Yadina: Wait!
How come the other kids can go after the ball, but not Jackie?
Jackie: It's because Sarah's family doesn't want Black people on their property.
It's not right!
But some people don't like me just because my skin is a different colour than theirs.
Yadina: But, isn't that discrimination?
Jackie: Yup.
Racial discrimination.
It's unfair and it feels awful!
Xavier: Jackie, that's terrible.
Brad: You don't deserve to be treated like that.
No one does.
Yadina: Is there anything we can do?
Jackie: (thinking) Hmmm- When something isn't right, it takes courage to change it.
I'm not sure exactly what to do, but... (gasps) I do know who can help!
Mallie Robinson: (gently) I'm glad you came to me, Jackie.
What happened to you wasn't right.
Jackie: I know.
But, what should I do, Mom?
Play somewhere else?
Mallie: We live here, and you have every right to play on this street.
I know it isn't easy to stand up to people like Sarah and her dad, in fact, it can be downright scary.
But when something isn't right, it takes courage to change it.
Jackie: That's what I said!
Mallie: That's my boy!
