(audience applauses) (Mellow guitar music) (Singing in Spanish) I do see, what can not be seen and what is not spoken and what can be, life song, Tender word and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Mouth (Mellow guitar music) Alone, alone is how I say farewell Who cares if I leave?
Who cares if I leave or if I retire?
It is heard, it is heard the voice from the past Patiently I will await In company of what I say to you Oh-oh Oh-oh Oh-oh I know him well Oh-oh Oh-oh Oh-oh I know him well (Mellow guitar music) My eyes are hers Father please Father please why is your love so far away?
Without the memories, who knows?
Who knows?
Without the memories, who knows?
Oh-oh Oh-oh Oh-oh I know him well Oh-oh Oh-oh Oh-oh I know him well (Mellow guitar music) I do see what can not be seen I do see what can not be seen I do see I do see [Spoken in Spanish] Hurry up!
I do see what can not be seen I do see what can not be seen I do see I do see I do see what can not be seen and what is not spoken and what can be, life song, Tender word and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse I do see what can not be seen and what is not spoken and what can be, life song, Tender word and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse I do see what can not be seen and what is not spoken and what can be, life song, Tender word and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth With nothing but a curse and stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Stuffed mouth Mouth (audience applauses) (soft acoustic guitar playing) [Spoken] My name is Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos Paz.
I was raised in southern Oregon in Mexican communities and I grew up listening to like, Mexican traditional music and I love it.
It s formed who I am as a person.
[Singing in Spanish] Sun eyes, wooden skin with a heart trembling for her Sincere words and their soul travlels, yes [Spoken] Now being in Mexico City, it s so poetic for me because my parents fought really hard for- so they could make a life for themselves here in the United States and there I am visiting a country that they left because they were afraid [Singing in Spanish] their love song [Spoken] What I do and what I am where I come from Where I come from and with the privilege of being a musician going to Mexico City and exploring different things there and seeing it for the very fir- obviously that s also going to impact how I write and how I create, not just with music but just how I am in the world Everything influences what I do.
[Singing in Spanish] You are guilty of giving me temptation.
In your eyes I stay awake and your lips seek me in darkness like nighttime prayer I ask God to give me happiness and much peace for my mother and my father brothers, I, yes I have been very well and bad and Be merciful Be merciful Be merciful We are actually the same (audience applause) (mellow music) -[Spoken in Spanish] This song is called Serpiente It speaks about anxiety, but beyond.
[Singing in Spanish] I don t know how to say it Like the anxiety that keeps me truly like this Even when destiny is nothing but rumors I m afraid to repeat it At the same time I don t want it to control me with one sigh Maybe it s out of anger Maybe it s out of anxiety Maybe it s all just but an image of our loneliness Maybe it s out of anger Maybe it s out of anxiety Maybe it s out of anger Ah- ah Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh But there will be no one to comprehend and as I pass time thinking and I spend time thinking all afternoon I don t forget about my family even when the wound is so deep I don t forget about my family even when the wound is so deep Friendships come and go like the furies Maybe it s out of anger Maybe it s out of anxiety Maybe it s out of anger Ah- ah Maybe it s out of anger Maybe it s out of anxiety Maybe it s all just but an image of our loneliness Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh Aaahh It s not fair, it never was It s not fair, it never was It s not fair, it never was It s not fair, it never was It s not fair, it never was It never was It s not fair, it never was It never was [Spoken in Spanish] It never was It s not fair, it never was It never was It s not fair, it never was It never was (audience applause) [Spoken in English] I m like, there s a crowd.
They might want to do it!
I usually don t do that kind of stuff and I did it just because, you know, (audience applauses) I ve been blessed to be playing with really talented sweetie people.
It s been magical because we ve been rehearsing the last couple of days and we ve been courting this magic here in New Mexico It s a family band.
There s Julia on bass, There s Isabeau on vocals Margaret on vocals those three, if I didn t have them in the band I think I would like lose my mind.
So important to have, you know, women energy in that band.
and then there s Antonio, he s playing drums.
Quinn, he s playing congas.
and Ryan is playing guitar.
Most of us know each other from Portland but we re all from everywhere.
Should we play another one?
(audiende applause) Okay!
(drum sticks click together) (mellow guitar music) [Singing in Spanish] I ve been told about betrayal My heart has been stolen with one hand on my back the other one lying more than ever It can t be controlled All of this is the same to me The deepest words, I swallow them.
(mellow guitar music) The good shadow that comes after A strongest and rebel heat It is months passing by, go by When nighttime descends and darkness falls When nighttime descends and darkness falls The good shadow that comes after A strongest and rebel heat It is months passing by, go by The good shadow that comes after A strongest and rebel heat It is months passing by, go by (audience applause) [Spoken in English] As a first generation Mexican American I have the responsibility as an American with my art and with my growth as a person to participate in the activism that s required out of me.
What s natrual.
In Mexico, when I m there, there s another that roll I play and it s really wild to have that duality Everything is just evolving for me and it s very, not that it s supposed to be like this heavy thing but it s a very charged thing.
It s like, a lot of information.
You know?
And I m really present with all of it.
It s just visceral.
[Singing in Spanish] You are like the wind.
The wind that takes me Flying everywhere, flying where I want Like a ghost, a ghost [Spoken] I m presently just kind of navagating like all those politics as I say Yeah, I was born in San Francisco, I was raised this way, and there s a lot of nuances to that a lot of people are not ready for it, to hear it, you know?
Moving to portland, having that experience, you know?
and like, evolving and then assimilating around things that was out of my control, but out of survival and now I m here.
What I do with my artistry, music, is how I m growing as a person.
The only difference is that we re making it an interview and I m sharing it but you re growing, everyone here is growing, you know?
and I get to share my diary to everybody, you know?
I m like This is where I ve been, this is why I write this, this is where I m going, and this is where I think I want to go.
It s like, it s vulnerable.
[Singing in Spanish] like nighttime prayers I ask God to give me happiness and much peace and for my mother and my father [Spoken] Everything that I do, the evolution of what I am is just a, uh, it s just a mirror for someone else.
I hope it just like, encourages other people to kinda talk about things, too, you know?
It doesn t have to be through music.
[Singing in Spanish] We re actually the same blood.
[vocalizing] (melodic guitar music) (applause) Aww, thank you.
(audience applause) (upbeat music) [Singing in English] Do you know?
Do you know what you ve been doing to me?
Do you know what it s like to be out of control?
Last night, I thought of you but I can t deny My mind has already wandered off.
Here is something for you and for what I cannot say.
Here is something Hey!
Here is something for you Here is something for you and for what I cannot say.
Here is something Hey!
Can t pretend that I didn t know you now I think I do I guess this is the only way As you walk, it always feels how I m always doing you wrong I know I can t make you stay Here is something for you Here is something for you.
For what I cannot say.
Here is something Hey!
Here is something for you Here is something for you and for what I cannot say.
Here is something Hey!
Here is, here is something Here is something Here is something for you Here is, here is something Here is something Here is something for you Da da, da da da da da Da da, da da da da da (audience applause) A lot of the songs are just echos of what I ve been trying to work out I m just working through myself and so the music and the sounds and the words and everything are just (pfft) You know?
Because of Mexico, where I come from everything, all of that is like in there.
People just have to be ready to like ask the right questions and to listen, you know?
That s what the music is about.
(upbeat music) [Singing in Spanish] The seed that is sown and everything that feels living in a relation Coverd in a dream and there we will find Another way to move on We drink from the river We drink from sweat That comes like water inside the heart Around the earth where it all begins when the full moon cheats on us (upbeat music) What matters more Life will take our breath away but what is real is the voice inside more and more than that and maybe the body is living history the body is the body is the body is the body is Another exit (upbeat music) The mighty sun wakes up at night Ready to give its children light and fire Anger is enough if you can t get away from the d*** poison When weak is not explained It is fear what does not go away and if you sleep with a wounded soul (upbeat music) Take good care of yourself and don t let them get inside of your heart The movement of people an example of bad luck We must heal conversation We must heal conversation We must heal conversation (upbeat music) (audience cheers and applauses) What matters more Life will take our breath away but what is real is the voice inside more and more than that and maybe the body is living history the body is the body is the body is the body is Another exit What matters more Life will take our breath away but what is real is the voice inside more and more than that and maybe the body is living history the body is the body is the body is the body is Another exit What matters more Life will take our breath away but what is real is the voice inside more and more than that and maybe the body is living history the body is the body is the body is the body is Another exit (upbeat music) (audience cheers and applauses) Thank you so much!
(audience cheers and applauses) -[Ken] New Mexico state question is red or green.
