It happened just over a week ago, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Someone threw a rock through the ICE office window.
A fire was also set behind that building, but Captain Jeremiah Stilley with the Yakima Fire Department says they're being treated as two separate incidents.
“They're not linked at this time besides proximity and timing.
Doesn't mean that they aren't related.
They could be, but there has been no evidence found at this time that they are related.” The fire started at a homeless encampment.
It burned up to the ICE facility property border.
It's being investigated as arson and there is a suspect for that.
There are no suspects at this time for the rock throwing incident.
DHS says there is a rise in assaults against ICE agents.
Last month, it released data showing an 830% increase in assaults from January to July compared to that same timeframe in 2024.
More than a dozen people went to Washington Governor Bob Ferguson's policy advisors asking for a state of emergency.
The group of immigrants and advocates are asking the state to address federal immigrant detentions, as well as housing issues affecting asylum seekers.
They want the state of emergency to protect migrants from evictions and rent hikes.
“If we do not resolve the immediate issue of the housing crisis that migrants are facing, then we are setting them up to have to be houseless again and really making them more vulnerable to the federal government's attacks against migrants with increased ICE raids.” That's Kassandra Seda with International Migrants Alliance.
The group also wants the governor to stop federal deportations and transfers to detention centers in places like El Salvador and Guantanamo Bay, without the consent of those being detained.
