Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Tonight, we're checking out some of the newest pop and rock acts here in the Twin Cities.
Join me for an incredible night of live music here at the historic Palace Theatre in downtown St. Paul.
Let's go.
(upbeat rock music) (lively music) The Palace Theatre first opened its doors in 1916, and it's been a stage to everything from vaudeville, big bands, and the silver screen.
After sitting dormant for 30 years, the Palace reopened in 2017 after a renovation, and kind of captures what I love about St. Paul, these beautiful old buildings that have found new life.
Even looking around, you can see where the original structure used to be, the bricks, the paint, and I'm so excited to be here for a night of live music.
(lively music) (crowd cheering) Taking to this historic stage is the Minneapolis pop group Yam Haus, known for their dance floor ready music, and kicking things off tonight is DNM, an experimental indie pop group made up of musicians who've been mainstays on the Twin Cities scene for years, and now they're together.
Their single, "Falling Out", is both mellow and upbeat, and I'll confess that I totally jammed out to it today while getting ready for tonight.
Please welcome to the stage, DNM.

- Well, we started off as friends, not even on some music stuff.
We all knew each other in the scene.
DeCarlo, I had met back in probably 2018.
Nate, probably around the same time, a little bit later, but just through hearing about each other's music, but it really just started off with just being friends.
- You know, I'm a music educator.
We talk a lot about, you know, the music we're doing and the people and the stories behind it, and I think an important thing to note is Black musicians and their contributions have been at the heart of popular music in America forever.
You know, talk to me about the importance of representation in Black indie bands.
- There's a lot of Black people in indie music, but I guess people never really think about how Black people created most genres, including indie music, I guess, when you think about, like, traditional African guitar playing, translating over to a lot of kinda modern indie pop stylings.
So, like, Vampire Weekend and stuff like that.
A pretty direct lineage between, like, Black American music, and I think what we make, all I really do is make Black American music, so.
- I started off as a guitarist mainly.
So, growing up, I listened to a lot of, like, metal music and punk music, and, you know, pop punk, that sort of thing.
It was usually a predominantly white-dominated I guess music genre, you could say, but it's funny, yeah.
Kind of like what DeCarlo was saying, whenever you could see different people of color in the genres, at least for me, I always usually paid special attention to them, because it was like seeing representation, you know, actually in action within music, and, you know, that can be kind of hard to find sometimes.
So I just think it's really important, especially with what we're doing.
You know, at the end of the day, we're just friends playing music, but, you know, who knows who else it could inspire?
- I tell my kids, "If you can see it, you can be it."
- Exactly.
- Right, but you gotta see it.
- Exactly.
- You gotta see it first.

What's something cool about, like, Minnesota music that we wouldn't know or that you love, or like a secret thing that you want more people to know about?
- There's not a lot of industry here.
Like, there's not a lot of music industry here, record labels, management companies, stuff like that.
- Tell me more about that.
- And because of that, the music can kind of take on really, really, really original, like, particular sounds, you know, because it's not really shaped by any taste-makers in any way.
Like, people just kind of make what they feel like making and see the vision through to the end, and this is what we end up with, you know?
And so a lot of times, like, music from here just sounds mad particular, and I really appreciate that.
- There's a lot of, it's, I don't wanna say insular, but I think that people really- - It's intimate.
- Yes, it's intimate, and I think people really have the space to sound like themselves and to really flesh out the stuff that they wanna do, and I have personally found that collaborating in the cities is like super, super, super easy.
You know, you just get in a room with people, and then start hanging out, and usually cool stuff winds up being the result.
- Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration.
Because, like, even tonight, you'll see it.
Not only do all four of us have our own bands and own separate kind of music histories, but even with Yam Haus, like, I was in the music video with Yam Haus.
That was my first introduction with them, and then he's playing trumpet with them tonight.
- Oh, are you really?
Oh, cool!
- So, like, even tonight, you're gonna see it on full display.
Like, everyone's really open to working with each other, and everyone is bringing their own stories and their own flavor.
It's like one big smoothie.
You know what I'm saying?
Like, name your smoothie.
You can go and find it here in Minneapolis.
Jamba Juice!
- Okay, but if you had to identify and describe your smoothie sound, how would you describe your music?
- Chocolate berry punch.
- Wow.
- Okay, now more.
- The chocolate, I mean, come on, there's some hot chocolate right here.
The berry, berries are just very sweet.
- So your music is sweet?
- Yeah, inside and out.
No, we're sweet.
We're sweet.
- Okay, and the punch?
- And then the punch, oh, "Falling Out," like, we're gonna be running across that stage.
We're gonna be jumping.
- Oh, it's like a little bit indie, a little bit like punk rock at times.
It's got some R&B stuff that Nate likes to incorporate, and, like, I feel like all of us just like, it's not like a conscious thing, like, what genre we're trying to do song by song.
So it's like very effortless, and the smoothie is like whatever it needs to be in that moment.

They're like, oh, this harmony or this song, and I just love seeing their enthusiasm.
These four guys started out like that in high school.
They dreamed of filling stadiums, and now they've sold out First Ave.
They've toured with Adam Lambert, toured with Kacey Musgraves, toured with AWOLNATION, and now they're here at the Palace Theatre, ready to make music.

So I have a question about your name.
There's a really beautiful story behind "Yam", part of the Yam Haus.
Can you tell me more?
- Beautiful is a strong word, I'll say that off the top, but we all lived in a house together, and a lot of dishes around, a lot of, you know, when you're a roommate, yeah, it wasn't all beautiful, but we were four dudes living together and doing life together, and roommates, and we had this "you are me" phrase, as a sort of beckoning call, part joke, part real, and Yam Haus was a name that was suggested to us because we were already calling our house the Yam Haus.
- Oh.
- And so we were like, it's the name we hate least.
"You are me" is what Yam stands for, which means treat people the way you wanna be treated.
In roommate terms, that means pick up your dishes, and then in life terms, it means, you know, be kind to people the way you would hope for them to be kind to you, and so that's our message, I guess.
Sometimes, it's kind of cheesy feeling, but it's genuine.
I think it's important to be a kind person.
- I really love your music, and I feel like the lyrics, you have the stuff that's really upbeat, makes you wanna move, but some of it is really, really personal.
You know, how does that translate into your music and especially your lyrics?
- The first album that we put out came from a deeply personal place for me, and to be honest, it's terrifying.
It's really hard to be vulnerable like that, I guess, and then also try to make a living off of your music, which is like, the nature of music and music business is kind of this never-ending wrestling match, and it can be really exhausting, but what's nice is, because there's four of us, we kind of can lean on each other when the business side or the over-vulnerable side starts to feel scary or challenging.
And, like, starting the band off, it was from a very personal place for me, and these guys surrounded me, and moving forward, like, we just all wanna try to be vulnerable with the music we end up putting out, which comes from the four of us in various ways.

- Tell me about the band dynamics, because you started in high school, and now you're here at the Palace.
- Yup, it started, I would say Seth and I were playing cafeterias and in his parents' basement and my parents' basement.
We had a band called Among Elephants, because my mom had- - The what elephants?
- Among Elephants.
- Among, okay, got it.
- Like amongst or among.
Yeah, yeah, and, yeah, we abandoned that band name.
My mom makes these concrete sculptures out of elephant ear plants, so we'd be downstairs and she'd have a bunch around us, and it was like among elephants.
Anyways, and then Zach was older than me, and we played hockey together, and only knew each other in this very masculine jock space, and then we bonded over our love of music later on, and called him up to see if he wanted to be a part of a band, and then we met Jake in college here in Minneapolis, and he was the one that made us the most polished, we are a real band, because he studied music in school.

- Words of affirmation.
- Okay, yeah, yeah, mine's words of affirmation as well.
Yeah, honestly, you need to learn that.
We needed to learn that when we were that close on tour.
I mean, every single day for three months.
I mean, we're working together.
We're sleeping in one hotel room.
We're in the van for hours on end, and it's surprising, honestly, that's what I'm most proud of at the end of the tour that we didn't come out hating each other, like, bummed with each other.
- We're stronger.
- Yeah, like, we became better friends and had fun and made memories, which is cool, so.
- I think that translates though.
Like, watching you even just now with this meet and greet or just on social media, it looks like you have such a fun energy, and you guys get along, and you're there to make music and invite people into that community.
- Definitely, and, sometimes, you have to remember to keep that at the center of it, because the business side of it can kind of rob you of the joy, and it is very exhausting to try to make a living playing music or doing something that you love, but, yeah, like Jake said, that's probably what I'm most proud of at this point in our career is that the four of us genuinely still like each other and still have a good time doing it, which is amazing.

(audience cheering) - What's so special about the Twin Cities is, honestly, this is a very supportive live music town, and we can now say that with certified credentials, because we've been to nearly every town across America the last three months, and talked to the venue people there, talked to people from there, and it's not normal for the amount of local bands, local music support that happens here.
Like, I will genuinely say we've been able to rise up here in terms of just genuine people that love music, they love coming out to shows, and I think it's more than almost anywhere else I've been to.
- There's something special too about this town, because they saw us four years ago when we just started as a band playing for like 50 people in small rooms all over the cities.
It's just cool to keep that kind of hometown spirit of, like, these people have been with us from the beginning.
They're supportive, and there's new people that come every time too, but we're just happy to be with our people.
- Yeah, it's always fun.
Even at the meet and greet, people come up and say, oh, I saw you at this show or that show, and it makes me realize, like, in the last four years, we've probably played over a hundred shows in Minneapolis, Twin Cities alone.
- Alone, yeah.
- Wow.
- Like, just different events like birthday parties, prom parties, like any kind of thing you can think of.
- Block parties, yeah.
- And then people, you know, trickle up.
They're like, oh, I saw you at, like, Skoog's Panini down the street.
I'm like, that was in like 2017, you know?
We never played Skoog's Panini, but we've had all these different moments in Minneapolis, Twin Cities, and now it's kind of like, they're all coming together in one place tonight, which is really exciting.
- What are you ending your set with tonight?
- Ooh.
Is that a secret?
Can I not ask that?
- It's public.
- Okay.
Yeah, it actually is public.
Tell them.
- Yeah, it is.
- "Groovin'" will be the last song of the set.
- [Natalia] Okay, tell me why.
- Actually, there's a lot of, within the Yam Haus fandom, we call it the Yam Fam, I don't know.
- Yam Fan, nice.
- There are the purists and the people that know us the most, and they're like, you've ended with "Groovin'" so many times.
Like, don't do it again, and I heard that complaint going into this show, thought about it, we thought about it.
We are trying to make everybody in this room, if it's the first time they're seeing us, we just love "Groovin'" as an ender, because it's such a childlike send-off of just fun and joy, so we're gonna do it tonight.
Someday, we'll switch it up, but we're not there yet.
Yeah, we switched it up on tour.
We didn't do it for the last three months.
That's partly why too, because we haven't done it for three months, so, for us, it feels fresh, but then for people that know us, they're like, you're ending with "Groovin'" again?
but I don't wanna hear it!
Sorry.
Sorry.
