(bright music) - Action and adventure, romance with a dash of comedy.

That's what's in store for you if you snag a ticket to "Zorro: A New Beginning."

It's the Draper Arts Council's world premiere musical.

Thomas Sharkey and John Smitherman are here with more details on this fresh take of Zorro.

And it's a story we kind of all know, but you guys are putting a new spin on it.

How excited are you to bring this program to Draper?

- This is an amazing, exciting opportunity for us.

I'm president of the Draper Arts Council, and I'm the producer of "Zorro: A New Beginning."

And I'd like to talk a little bit about the Draper Arts Council.

We put on our shows at the beautiful Draper Amphitheater.

It's an outdoor theater in Draper, up in the hills.

And we do three musicals every year.

And this is a year of firsts for us.

All three musicals are live orchestration.

We did "School of Rock", we did "Hadestown", and now "Zorro: A New Beginning."

So that's a first.

And it's the first time we've done an original show.

It's quite an adventure for us.

And for me personally, this is the first time I'm a producer, so it's pretty exciting, so.

- And John, you're the playwright and the star playing Zorro.

What has that been like kind of seeing this all come to life?

- Oh, it's exciting.

It's a wonderful cast to work with.

And Zorro is, in this production, he's the aging Zorro, so I need to point that out.

(laughs happily) But there are some other exciting swashbuckling moments within the show that, yeah, it's fun for the whole family.

- And what do you guys hope that the audience will take away from watching this?

- Well, I think the multitude of characters in this show is pretty amazing, and that's one reason that the council decided to go with it.

Utah has an amazing talent pool to go with.

And also the venue.

It's in the hills, it's southwestern kind of style, the feeling, it's desert-like.

And I don't think New Jersey has deserts.

(laughs happily) - (indistinct chattering) That's why we're here.

Yeah.
