Chain Locker
A passageway between the
captain's cabin
and the
captain's stateroom
led to the chain locker. In this small room, the
Monitor's anchor hoister hung in the overhead, just
forward of the ladder leading to the
pilothouse. From here, crew members could raise or lower the ship's
anchor at will without exposing anyone to the elements or
enemy fire. The area below the pilothouse also provided
additional storage areas for a paint locker and the
boatswain's stores.
