PBS HONORS BILL MOYERS WITH "BE MORE" AWARD

May 18, 2006; Orlando, Florida -- PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger presented the third annual "Be More" Award to Bill Moyers, award-winning journalist and PBS contributor. The presentation was made May 19 at the PBS Showcase, held May 17-20 at the Renaissance Orlando Resort at SeaWorld.

"Bill Moyers has exemplified the mission of public television for over 30 years," said Ms. Kerger. "Americans have had no more trusted guide in topics both political and personal. He has walked us through some of the most engaging conversations of our lives, exploring themes ranging from myth to death, from identity to the aftermath of September 11. He has fought for excellence and honesty in journalism, and we applaud and honor him."

With his wife Judith Davidson Moyers, Mr. Moyers founded the production company Public Affairs Television, and has been awarded more than 30 Emmys and virtually every other major television journalism prize, including a gold baton from the Dupont Journalism awards and a lifetime Peabody award. He served as executive editor of a variety of programs on PBS, including BILL MOYERS' JOURNAL, JOSEPH CAMPBELL AND THE POWER OF MYTH, ON OUR OWN TERMS: MOYERS ON DYING, FREE SPEECH FOR SALE, TRADE SECRETS, HEALING AND THE MIND, CLOSE TO HOME: MOYERS ON ADDICTION and NOW WITH BILL MOYERS. BILL MOYERS ON FAITH & REASON, his newest series, begins June 23. Mr. Moyers was a print journalist, press secretary to President Lyndon Johnson and newspaper publisher before coming to television in 1970.

The PBS "Be More" Award is an annual award created to recognize extraordinary individuals who inspire public television and viewers to "Be More." It is based on PBS' award-winning branding campaign, which encourages viewers to celebrate and discover qualities such as "Be More Informed Engaged Creative Open-Minded" among others. Previous recipients include Fred Rogers and Jim Lehrer.
