Watch PBS Arts from Minnesota: H.M.S. Pinafore on October 14 at 9pm EST
Gilbert and Sullivan’s blockbuster is loved for its dynamite songs, gleefully entertaining story and saucy satire. The Guthrie Theater’s modern twist infuses the memorable melodies with fresh musical arrangements from big band swing to classic pop and new show-stopping choreography. Go behind the scenes with costuming, musical staging, set building and learn more about the Guthrie Theater. You can also watch the full performance here.
Performed by the Guthrie Theater and produced by tpt National Productions. Funding for H.M.S. Pinafore was provided by the Minnesota State Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008; the Blythe Brenden Fund of the Ted and Dr. Roberta Mann Foundation; Russell B. Drawing on the energy and excitement from audiences, the performers play to the passage ways, or vomitoria, and to the ship's quarterdeck that is the Guthrie Theater's thrust stage. Director Joe Dowling describes the musical staging designed by Choreographer David Bolger as inventive. Bolger works in Ireland and the UK and is the artistic director and co-founder of Dublin's CoisCeim Dance.
