This bitterly polemical letter reflects tensions between Paul and the
Christian community he founded in Galatia, a Roman province in Asia Minor. In
his absence, Paul is finding that his teachings are being challenged by others
claiming to be Christian teachers who are encouraging the formerly pagan
Galatians to be circumcised and observe other elements of Jewish law. Paul
responds by vehemently excoriating these false teachers, warning against
circumcision, and asserting that Christians need not follow Jewish dietary
laws.
Galatians 1.10 -1.24
10Am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please
men? If I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ. 11For
I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is
not man's gospel.
12For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a
revelation of Jesus Christ. 13For you have heard of my former life in Judaism,
how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; 14and I
advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely
zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. 15But when he who had set me
apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, 16was pleased to
reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I
did not confer with flesh and blood, 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those
who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned
to Damascus. 18Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas,
and remained with him fifteen days. 19But I saw none of the other apostles
except James the Lord's brother. 20(In what I am writing to you, before God, I
do not lie!) 21Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cili'cia. 22And I
was still not known by sight to the churches of Christ in Judea; 23they only
heard it said, "He who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once
tried to destroy." 24And they glorified God because of me.
Galatians 2.1 - 2.14
2I went up by revelation; and I laid before them (but privately before those
who were of repute) the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, lest somehow
I should be running or had run in vain. 3But even Titus, who was with me, was
not compelled to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4But because of false
brethren secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we
have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage-- 5to them we did
not yield submission even for a moment, that the truth of the gospel might be
preserved for you. 6And from those who were reputed to be something (what they
were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality) --those, I say, who
were of repute added nothing to me; 7but on the contrary, when they saw that I
had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been
entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised 8(for he who worked through Peter
for the mission to the circumcised worked through me also for the Gentiles),
9and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and
John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of
fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised;
10only they would have us remember the poor, which very thing I was eager to
do. 11But when Cephas came to Antioch I opposed him to his face, because he
stood condemned. 12For before certain men came from James, he ate with the
Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the
circumcision party. 13And with him the rest of the Jews acted insincerely, so
that even Barnabas was carried away by their insincerity. 14But when I saw
that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to
Cephas before them all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like
a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?"
Galatians 1.6 -1.9
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the
grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel-- 7 not that there is
another gospel, but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the
gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to
you a gospel contrary to that which we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9
As we have said before, so now I say again, If any one is preaching to you a
gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed.
Galatians 3.1 - 5.26
Chapter 3
The Experience of the Spirit
You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes
that Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified! 2 The only thing I want
to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Spirit by doing the works of the
law or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? Having started with
the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh? 4 Did you experience so much
for nothing?--if it really was for nothing. 5 Well then, does God supply you
with the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law,
or by your believing what you heard?
The Promise to Abraham
6 Just as Abraham "believed God, and I it was reckoned to him as
righteousness," 7 so, you see, those who believe are the descendants of
Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles
by faith, declared the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "All the Gentiles
shall be blessed in you." 9 For this reason, those who believe are blessed with
Abraham who believed.
10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse; for it is
written, "Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the things
written in the book of the law." 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified
before God by the law; for "The one who is righteous will live by faith." 12
But the law does not rest on faith; on the contrary, "Whoever does the works of
the law will live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by
becoming a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a
tree"-- 14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to
the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through
faith.
15 Brothers and sisters, I give an example from daily life: once a person's
:will has been ratified, no one adds to it or annuls it. 16 Now the promises
were made to Abraham and to his offspring; it does not say, "And to
offsprings," as of many; but it says, "And to your offspring that is, to one
person, who is Christ. 17 My point is this: the law, which came four hundred
thirty years later, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as
to nullify the promise. 18 For if the inheritance comes from the law, it no
longer comes from the promise; but God granted it to Abraham through the
promise.
The Purpose of the Law
19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the
offspring would come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained by
angels through a mediator. 20 Now a mediator involves more than one party, but
God is one.
21 Is the law then opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law
had been gioven that could make alive, then righteousness would indeed come
through the law. 22 But the scripture has imprisoned all things under the power
of sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given
to those who believe.
23 Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until
faith would be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until
Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has
come, we are no longer subject to disciplinarian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you
are all children of God through faith. 27 As many of you as were baptised into
Christ have clothed yourself with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek,
there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for you
are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are
Abraham's offspring, heirs according to the promise.
Heirs and Children of God
Chapter 4
1 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave,
though he is the owner of all the estate; 2 but he is under guardians and
trustees until the date set by the father. 3 So with us; when we were
children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. 4 But when
the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the
law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive
adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his
Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7 So through God you are no
longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir.
No Turning Back
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by
nature are no gods; 9 but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be
known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental
spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days, and
months, and seasons, and years! 11 I am afraid I have labored over you in
vain.
An Appeal to Friendship
12 Brethren, I beseech you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are.
You did me no wrong; 13 you know it was because of a bodily ailment that I
preached the gospel to you at first; 14 and though my condition was a trial to
you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as
Christ Jesus. 15 What has become of the satisfaction you felt? For I bear you
witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them
to me. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They
make much of you, but for no good purpose; they want to shut you out, that you
may make much of them. 18 For a good purpose it is always good to be made much
of, and not only when I am present with you. 19 My little children, with whom
I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you! 20 I could wish to be
present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you....
Chapter 5
Warning Against Circumcision
2 Now I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of
no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who receives circumcision
that he is bound to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who
would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through
the Spirit, by faith, we wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ
Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith
working through love.
7 You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This
persuasion is not from him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole
lump. 10 I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view than
mine; and he who is troubling you will bear his judgment, whoever he is. 11
But if I, brethren, still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? In
that case the stumbling block of the cross has been removed. 12I wish those
who unsettle you would mutilate themselves!
Freedom for Love
13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an
opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another. 14
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your neighbor as
yourself." 15 But if you bite and devour one another take heed that you are
not consumed by one another.
The Works of the Flesh
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh.
17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the
Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent
you from doing what you would. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not
under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are plain: fornication, impurity,
licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger,
selfishness, dissension, party spirit, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and
the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things
shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
The Fruit of the Spirit
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such there is no
law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its
passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the
Spirit. 26 Let us have no self-conceit, no provoking of one another, no envy
of one another.
