Parrots in the Land of Oz
Introduction

NATURE tracks down the cockiest characters in the land down under in Parrots in the Land of Oz.

We keep them in cages in our homes, but in their natural state they are independent birds who can seek out water over hundreds of miles through pure instinct. We feed them seed from a pet store, but they can find food in a wide variety of habitats. We give them plastic toys and mirrors to play with when in fact in the wild some have figured out how to use tools to communicate and attract mates.

For tens of millions of years, parrots have survived and thrived in Australia even as the continent underwent dramatic changes, including some brought about by man. Though some, like the golden-shouldered Parrot are threatened, these tough Aussies have adapted well to deal with harsh life in the outback. Clever, resourceful, opportunistic and resilient, parrots may be Australia’s toughest survivors, and they’re certainly its most beautiful.

According to the site, it will available for purchase in August. Go to the shop and look under Nature, then Animal and look for the title.

This was one of Nature’s most fascinating episodes, which we had the pleasure of watching a few months ago. The DVD is NOW AVAILABLE for purchase! What a treat!

Does anyone know what the music for this program? It sounds so familiar, but I can’t place it.

Leah -- October 20th, 2008 at 12:38 am

When I watched this show with my bird I thought I read at the bottom during the show “Vote for for the parrot you thinks is sexy at kpbs.org” I do not see that here at this website. The show looks like it was an old showing from the previous posted comments, so maybe that was for the first showing.

I digged the narration style. I digged the budgieness. Yay to Sue for helping the gold parrots. Bummer to the eaten budgies.

I want to see this program. I have heard nothing but rave reviews about it. However, I cannot find that it is being rebroadcast at any time soon, and I can’t get it from the “shop” because shipping is only available in the U.S. (I live in Canada…you know, the big neighbour with the friendly border up north). I can’t download it from any site either. Can anybody help me?

I purchased the DVD from PBS in February 2008–it was shipped 3/13/08. When I opened it to play it, the CD was severely scratched Sometimes when CD’s are shipped, they come loose. I would advise checking upon receipt.
