A summer’s day and Fred (Cliff Parisi) reunites a well-loved toy dog with its delighted young owner whilst three young girls race towards St. Wilbur’s school as Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) readies her bicycle for work. At the gate, one of the girls trips and falls. The school dinner lady, Molly (Kate Rutter), hurries over but is troubled by a sudden sharp pain in her back. It is not the first time she has experience such pain and is worried she may have cancer.
At the maternity home, a newly arrived patient, Pam (Sophie Ford), explains to Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) that she’s recently separated from her husband, Kenny (Nicholas Armfield), and once she’s had the baby is moving away to Stevenage for a fresh start. She hasn’t given her permission to allow him into the delivery room but he turns up anyway, pleading to be given access but to no avail.
Later that night, Sister Catherine (Molly Vevers) checks on the babies in the nursery who are fast asleep in their bassinettes. However, the following morning it becomes apparent that one of the babies is missing and there is no sign of him or of the person that took him.
Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) tells Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) that his solicitor has applied for his decree absolute which means he’ll be a single man by the end of the month. He invites her away for a weekend and she excitedly starts making plans.
Meanwhile, Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) delivers some news to the Turners and Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) about Christopher’s father, The Cormorant.
