At Cyril's (Zephryn Taitte) flat, Fred (Cliff Parisi) oversees plumbers who wrestle with decayed lead pipes. Cyril and Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) return from their trip, embarrassed to stumble into the chaos and the clear disapproval of Mrs. Wallace (Linda Hargreaves).
Later that afternoon, expectant mother Ruth Khan (Annie Kingsnorth) arrives at the busy clinic and admits her preference for a home birth to link her own and her husband’s traditions.
Timothy (Max Macmillan) passes his medical exams but is undecided about becoming a GP or a surgeon.
Over at the Buckles’ paper shop, Violet (Annabelle Apsion) greets Hilda Barrowman (Penny Ryder), whose son helped Fred with the plumbing. She has come to buy tins of luncheon meat for a celebratory family supper in her son’s new home. That night, calamity strikes as one by one, the family are felled by violent sickness. Dr. Turner (Stephen McGann) examines them all before leaving them in what appears to be recovery, suggesting that they turn on the heating to stay warm.
At tea, Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) uncharacteristically shows little appetite for her pudding, while Trixie (Helen George) worries about the future of midwifery in Britain. Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) redirects them to thoughts of St Raymond’s Feast Day and a planned strawberry tea.
