Choctawhatchee Bay had its oyster reefs dredged in the twentieth century, and development along its coasts has removed fringe reefs and marshes that cleaned the water, sheltered marine species, and prevented erosion. The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance is working to restore these habitats.
