Michelle: I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THAT PROJECT RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE.
Lauren: BUT IT WAS IN 2012, AT THE DETROIT AUTO SHOW... John: DETROIT WAS A REBIRTH FOR ACURA'S LUXURY BRAND... Lauren: WHEN SUPERCAR STARDOM CAME CALLING.
Michelle: SO, THAT'S WHEN MY BOSS AT THE TIME APPROACHED AND WAS LIKE, "WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THIS?"
AND WHAT, I MEAN, YOU CAN'T SAY NO!
IT'S LIKE DREAM CAR!

Michelle: SO THIS AREA RIGHT HERE IS MY FAVORITE AREA OF THE WHOLE CAR.
AND THIS RIGHT HERE IS FEEDING THE INTERCOOLERS, SO THIS AIR COMES FROM THE FRONT AND STAYS ALONG THE BODY SIDE, AND GETS SHOVED IN HERE.
Lauren: FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTIONALITY IN ANY SUPERCAR, AND YOU CAN DEFINITELY SEE THAT RINGS TRUE IN THE NSX.
Michelle: IT'S USUALLY LIKE YOU'RE PLAYING TENNIS.
IT'S BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN DESIGN, ENGINEERING, DESIGN, AND ENGINEERING.
WE WANTED TO USE THE STYLING TO ENHANCE ALL THE PERFORMANCE, THE COOLING, THE AERODYNAMICS, BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A HIGH PERFORMANCE CAR, ALL THOSE THINGS ARE CRUCIAL, SO WE WANTED THE STYLING AND DESIGN TO ENHANCE ALL OF THAT.
Lauren: PULLING FROM THE ORIGINAL NSX... Michelle: IN THEORY, THE SOUL OF IT WE WANTED TO RELATE TO THE ORIGINAL.
Lauren: THE NEW DESIGN PROVES IT'S AT THE FOREFRONT TOO... NOT JUST WITH ITS EXOTIC EXTERIOR, BUT WITH MICHELLE.
SHE'S THE FIRST WOMAN TO LEAD THE DESIGN TEAM OF SUCH A LIMITED PRODUCTION, EXOTIC CAR... SOMETHING SHE DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL "AFTER" PRODUCTION.
Michelle: SO I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE FEMALE DESIGNING A SUPER CAR THING UNTIL AFTERWARD, BUT THAT WOULD HAVE, YEAH, I WAS PRETTY MOTIVATED BUT I THINK THAT WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT A LITTLE EXTRA PUSH.
IT'S KINDA COOL TO HEAR THAT.
Lauren: JUST LIKE I'M STILL IN AWE THAT THIS IS MY JOB HERE AT MOTORWEEK, MICHELLE SAYS, "GETTING YOUNG WOMEN TO SEE THAT HER JOB IS AN OPTION FOR THEIR CAREERS, IS WHERE THE INTEREST STARTS."
Michelle: I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE HAPPENED UPON IT AT A CAR SHOW, BUT HOW MANY LITTLE GIRLS ARE WALKING AROUND AT A CAR SHOW, YOU KNOW.
I THINK IT'S JUST A MATTER OF EXPOSING IT TO MORE PEOPLE.
Lauren: BUT THE GLASS CEILING IS STARTING TO CRACK.
Michelle: I AM SEEING MORE WOMEN GET UP INTO MORE LEADERSHIP ROLES, LIKE MARY BARRA WITH GM, I'M SEEING MORE WOMEN GOING INTO HIGHER RANKS LIKE THAT.
WHICH I WASN'T SEEING NECESSARILY WHEN I FIRST STARTED, THAT'S ALSO MOTIVATING.
IT'S GOOD TO SEE.
Lauren: SO FELLAS, EXPECT TO SEE MORE WOMEN BEHIND THE WHEEL; DRIVING THE FUTURE OF WHAT WE ALL DRIVE.
John: CARS ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMPLICATED...
BUT SOME SIMPLE LESSONS STILL HOLD TRUE.
THIS WEEK PAT TAKES US BACK TO THE BASICS DOWN AT GOSS' GARAGE.
Pat Goss: TODAY'S TIRES HAVE ALL KINDS OF ELECTRIC GADGETS ON THEM.
AND TO MAKE ALL OF THAT WORK WE NEED SEVERAL OF THESE... WIRE HARNESSES THEY'RE ALL OVER UNDERNEATH THE CAR HIDDEN WHERE YOU CAN'T SEE THEM.
THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF WIRES, AND ONE OF THE BIG PROBLEMS IS SOMETHING LIKE WE SEE IN THIS WIRE CONNECTOR IT IS CORROSION, AND CORROSION LIKE THAT COULD UPSET JUST ABOUT EVERY CIRCUIT ON THE CAR.
NOW, IF YOU'RE IN TO DO IT YOURSELF WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
WELL, FIRST YOU HAVE TO KNOW THERE ARE VARIOUS CHEMICALS THAT CAN BE USED TO TREAT SPECIFIC PROBLEMS, THINGS LIKE BATTERY CLEANERS TO ELECTRONICS CLEANERS ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS.
USED THE ONE THAT'S DESIGNED FOR WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO DO.
AND DON'T FORGET, THAT DIELECTRIC GREASE IS YOUR FRIEND.
INSIDE OF A WIRE CONNECTOR IT'LL KEEP MOISTURE OUT AND KEEPING MOISTURE OUT WILL HELP PREVENT CORROSION.
NOW, IF YOU LIKE TO TEST THINGS YOURSELF, YEAH THAT CAN BE FUN, BUT REMEMBER, HERE WE HAVE AN OLD FASHIONED VOLT-OHM METER.
IT CANNOT BE USED ON A MODERN CAR BECAUSE IT FLOWS TOO MUCH ELECTRICAL ENERGY THROUGH SOME OF THESE ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS AND IT COULD DAMAGE THE ELECTRONICS.
WHAT YOU NEED IS A DVOM... DIGITAL VOLT-OHM METER.
THEY PRODUCE A DIFFERENT WAY OF TESTING, SO THAT THEY DON'T DAMAGE ELECTRONIC PARTS.
THEN OVER HERE, WE HAVE SOME HANDY DO IT YOURSELF STUFF.
THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE TESTER, IT DOESN'T GIVE YOU A LOT OF INFORMATION, BUT IT HELPS GIVE YOU AN IDEA ABOUT THE CONDITION OF YOUR BATTERY AND YOUR ALTERNATOR.
AND OVER HERE, WE HAVE WHAT'S CALLED AN "AMP-PROBE."
THIS AMP-PROBE GOES AROUND A WIRE HARNESS AND IT MEASURES THE AMOUNT OF CURRENT FLOWING THROUGH IT.
NOW, THE BIG THING HERE IS TO MAKE SURE THAT ANY TOOL THAT YOU USE AROUND THE ELECTRICAL PARTS OF A MODERN CAR, THAT IT IS LABELED COMPUTER SAFE AND THAT INCLUDES YOUR TEST LIGHTS.
YOUR OLD FASHIONED TEST LIGHT, THROW IT IN THE TRASH IT CAN DO A LOT OF DAMAGE TO A MODERN ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT.
