Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Hi, I'm Miss Penny from KidVision Pre-K and we are here to spend a day with a music teacher.
- Hi, Miss Penny, my name is Miss Tracy.
Thank you for having me.
- How long have you been teaching music?
- 16 years.
- A long time.
- Yeah.
- When did you know that you were musically inclined?
- Well, I think I've been singing since about five years old.
I always loved music.
I love singing and dancing in my house.
- Do you play a musical instrument?
- I do, I play the guitar.
I had learned piano but guitar was perfect and I loved that I can bring it with me everywhere I go.
- What does your typical day look like?
- Each morning, I get all of my instruments together, I make sure that everything is clean.
I bring my guitar, I bring my speaker, I bring my phone to play music and I go from place to place and I teach music to either just children or children and families.
- And what type of instruments do kids play with?
- Oh, well, I have rhythm sticks, I have egg shakers.
I use drums and sometimes you just use your body.
- Oh, it sounds like great fun.
- It's so much fun.
- Why did you want to become a music teacher?
- Well, having been a singer myself and just loving music and I saw it as a mom how much fun it was to make music with my children, I decided that I needed to do this for a career.
- It's really nice to have families share music together.
- It is.
It's great.
It's so much fun.
- Do you have any funny stories about kids?
- I do, I do.
You know how children love to sing Old MacDonald Had A Farm or Old MacDonald Had A Zoo.
I always ask children, what animal do you wanna do?
And I'll go around the room.
And inevitably somebody will say giraffe.
And I think, I don't know what a giraffe says, what does a giraffe say?
And they stare at me and I have to go like this.
It's so funny.
- So instead of saying the sound, they all have to stick out-- - Right, because they really don't make a sound.
- But they do have really long tongues.
- They do.
(chuckles) - That's really funny.
- Miss penny, when I start my day, I have to warm up my voice and I warm up my body so I'm ready for singing and moving and I have lots of energy.
And I'm doing a class this afternoon, would you like to warm up with me?
- I'd love to warm up with you.
- Great.
I can't wait.
(playful music) (bells chiming) Miss Penny, you ready to warm up with me?
- I am.
- Okay, great, we're gonna start with our shoulders and roll them back.
Good.
We're gonna stretch our neck to the left.
Stretch our neck to the right.
Let's open up our arms really big.
I always tell the kids, "Pretend you're an airplane."
Good.
And we're gonna stretch our legs to the front.
And we're gonna point our toes and flex our feet.
And point, and flex.
We're gonna reach up high, I'm gonna touch my toes.
You wanna touch your toes too?
Don't worry if you can't get there.
(upbeat music) Oh, that's good.
Great.
And I like to bend.
And stretch.
And just reach my toes one more time.
So my body's ready.
And then I like to warm up my voice.
It's a little silly.
So I'm going to sit criss-cross applesauce.
And I like to hold on to my tummy, it's really your diaphragm, and we're gonna make these silly sounds.
(playful music) (exhaling with sound) And then we're gonna sing some notes.
Okay?
♪ La, la, la, la, la ♪ ♪ La, la, la, la, la ♪ ♪ La, la, la, la, la ♪ ♪ La, la, la, la, la ♪ Great.
Last, we're gonna warm up our lips.
(fluttering lips) (laughing) (upbeat music) And then I'm ready to sing.

- Thank you.
