Heidi Lucero, an abalone artist of the Acjachemen community, collects naturally occuring asphaltum from natural deposits along the coast. As she chips it off in chunks, she explains lighter asphaltum floats onto the ocean surface, while the heavier material seeps up through cracks on the ground. She uses this natural tar as sealant, melted and paired with pine pitch, to seal canoe planks.
