Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Hi, my name is Melissa Unger.
This is my Teachable Moment.
Do you think it's possible to hold a book up in the air using something like these flimsy sheets of paper?
Maybe if I take the paper and stack it on top of each other.
If I put the book there, does it hold it up?
No, what about if I use some tape and tape the paper to the table?
Will it stand?
No, but that does give me an idea.
A table can hold really heavy things, right?
What makes a table stand?
What if I turn the paper into columns like the legs of a table?
Will it hold a book?
When you build with columns, the weight of the book or whatever is pushing down on the paper spreads out, so that each column holds a bit of the load.
How much weight can you get the paper to hold?
