Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipVision kids it's me Miss Penny and today we are going to learn about America's favorite sport baseball Billy the Marlin amazing let's go [Music] wow baseball is a fun Sport with two teams playing against each other the team with the most runs wins the game I got to play with former Major League player and 2003 World Series winner Juan Pierre and is four kids so fun I coach my kids now and the biggest thing yeah and the biggest thing I love to teach them is about teamwork being a good teammate uh always pulling for your teammates um showing respect for your other team so if you do well it's not all rah R you show respect for your other the the team that you're playing because one day you're probably going to be on that side of it as well so um there so many life lessons in baseball and that's that's why I really enjoy it I really like the sportsmanship that they always shake hands after a game and however they're feeling about it it's like we're all in this together we're all in this together and that's such a life lesson as you know when you grow up as an adult uh that's stuff you can take with you but at 5 6 s years old you're already developing those skills through the game of baseball and now let's talk about playing the game playing the game all right once you the object well the object is the score more than the other guy all right you how do you score how do you score you score by you have the uh three bases in home plate so you have first base you have second base you have third base and you have home plate and you have to run them in that order to be able to score you can't skip one cuz if you Skip One the Umpire may call you out all right so uh I don't like that we we don't like we like all the safe calls all right so once you make three outs then your opposing team has to B and then you the way you make out if they get you before you touch the base then you will be called out all right and then you got mo one of the most electric things in there is the Home Run so when you hit the ball and where we're standing guys actually hited this for and this would be considered a home run because it goes over the fence and when you get a home run depending how many guys on base if nobody's on base you get one run if one guy's on base you get two runs if three guys on base it's a three run Homer and this is what you call a grand slam is three guys on base and you hit the Home Run that's called a grand slam four guys come in and that's that's a big deal that's exciting let's find out what equipment we need to play baseball you got the bat you got the glove got the helmet you need a ball you need a ball can't play without a ball and that's the pitch you can't start the game without the pitcher throwing the ball so you definely need a ball you need cleats um because you want to not be able to slip on the dirt and all that you need cleat so I notice on your uniform you wear a team shirt a belt nice baseball pants baseball socks and what about your shoes um they're um cleat so they'll help you dig into the ground so you won't SL cuz with regular shoes if you like run hard and like go like that you might slip now that we have our equipment it's time to play oh well almost one of the most important things we do before we start throwing and running and we have to stretch so we do some stretches to get loose to make sure our body's are ready to go so we don't have injuries and we don't get hurt now we can play and so you have to make a all the way around in order to get a run right and what's the difference between a run and a home run home run goes over the fence or inside the Parker inside the park home run is if it gets to alfha and you go to first second third and home before they get you out but most typical home runs go over the fence all right and then if you just score run if a guy's on base and you hit the ball and he scores that's just a regular run but you have to to go in order you can't skip you can't hit the ball and run to second base you have to go to first base first second base second third base third and then home all right and if you skip a base if you miss a base and keep running guess what you're going to be called out I'm probably give you two motion and the motion we love to see is the safe all right but if we happen to strike out or get thrown out then he will give us the out yeah out take a swing all right all right oh she's a natural Miss p is it anything you can't do miss F oh you're natural playing ball is fun and my friend told me all about other jobs that can be done at a baseball stadium so there are a lot of jobs around a baseball absolutely uh you know to put on the show that we put on every day with with the team there's so much that gets involved it's on the marketing uh Team uh to invite people into the ballpark then we have the ground screw that takes care of the field make sure we have the right conditions everybody working all the concessions to make sure that the food and the drinks are are good for a crowd you have to have food this is baseball his job here is really to keep everybody happy right people are entertained by what's going on on the field but really making them happy it's Billy mascots do a great job keeping everyone entertained and having fun Billy showed us one of my favorite parts of a baseball stadium the snack bar one of the best parts of being at a baseball game is the food is the food we're going to find the food that's on my shirt and see if Billy can find it at the snack bar peanuts haha Cracker Jacks do you have Cracker Jacks it's a winner we have Cracker Jacks good job pretzels whoa this is a good looking pretzel almost as good as mine we have a hot dog Billy woohoo we do thank you we have hot dogs we have pretzels we have Cracker Jacks and we have peanuts I think we're ready for snack time I want to thank you for teaching us about baseball it was a home run day bye [Music]
