Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiphi Kid Vision kids we're here today at Safety Town to learn about bike safety come on let's go Safety Town is a small breten town in the middle of a park with kid-sized buildings roads street signs and even a railroad crossing it's the perfect place to practice and learn about bike safety and pedestrian safety when you're teaching kids about bike safety what kind of things do you teach them about so we teach the kids how to stop at a stop sign where to stop different hand signals when they get to the stop sign such as left right and stop we also teach them if there's pedestrians going through the crosswalk you have to yield to them and stop so that they can get across the road safely that's [Music] terrific there are lot lots of things to learn about pedestrian and bike safety we want to be visible does anybody know what that means no that means we want to wear bright clothes like this t-shirt so that people see us when we're riding bikes right so when I'm riding down the road I always wear my bright colored t-shirts or this bright colored shirt with reflectives on it so that people see me when I'm riding bikes it makes it a lot safer for me to ride my bikes and of course it's important to wear a bike helmet this is my helmet this is my bike riding helmet when you put your helmet on you want to make sure that the helmet lines up to the middle of your forehead here easy way to remember is if you look up if you can see your helmet it's good can you see your helmet I saw you looking up why do you hel because that's where it protects your entire head so if you drop it down a little bit go ahead and tilt yours forward just a little bit keep going keep going you should be able to look up if can you see your helmet when you look up all right Push It Forward a little bit more just keep pushing it Forward I could and as soon as you have it in the spot that it needs to be you just buckle up right there it's important that we buckle up okay this is what keeps fall exactly the helmet won't fall off if we buckle up how do I look great yes why do we wear helmets well helmets protect our head in case that we happen to fall off of our bikes I'm a great Rider but I never want to fall off my bike and there's several obstacles on the road that can cause me to fall so if I do fall I want to protect my head it's also important to let cars and other cyclists know when you're planning to turn and when you're going to stop now there are hand signals that you use when you ride a bike does everybody know which direction right is which side is that penny is that the right yes yeah so if we're facing this way which which side is the right side that side that's exactly what you do when you want to turn right on your bicycle you point this way way to the right exactly what do you think we do when we want to go left this way we point this way that's how we go left everybody point this way yes that's left does anybody know what we do when we want to stop oh that's a tough one right stopping is showing your palm to the back can everybody do this that means stop I'm going to stop that's when you tell the riders or the cars behind you that you're going to be slowing down to stop okay this is the safe way to do it okay so we have right we have left and we have stop there we go good job it's important to pay attention to traffic signs traffic signs tell us what rules we must follow when we're on the road I'm going to show you a traffic sign let me know what you think it is stop oh yes you guys all know that stop stop okay is the big red sign that we see everywhere we see it right here behind us it's all over the park here what do we do when we see this sign stop we stop right easy what's important to do when we stop yeah we stopped what what else should we do think think about it what was that Miss Penny both ways look both ways we have to stop and then we want to look both ways we want to look left and right to make sure that nothing is coming and then we can go what's this one does anybody know what this one one is it has two RS railroad okay railroad does anybody know what that word means or what those words mean it's the train so we look down there we can see the two RS for a railroad that means a train is coming the light will go red and then we'll have an arm that comes down and it'll flash lights it tells you to stop don't go past it when it goes all the way back up that means you can go through but this is railroad I'm going to show you another one you know what this is no what is it don't run no very close very close this is a pedestrian cross sign okay so we may see this sign right here right there so this is a crosswalk oh I see yeah these two lines right here can you can so you can walk can everybody see these lines yeah okay so when somebody's waiting here and we're riding our bikes we want to stop for them and allow them to cross this when you see this sign that means people can cross on that on that portion of the road we have one more Uncommon one and this is does anybody know this word Yi yield very good this is a yield sign does anybody know what this sign means Miss Penny you want to take a guess yes it means that you um um you use your manners and you let someone else go before you go yeah where it is right there yes this is the yield sign this means you slow down and you use your manners and we call this a roundabout and it just means that you allow people to use it before you use it so you use your manners just like Miss Penny said and you allow everybody to use it safely this is the yield sign we slow down and we yield to traffic or pedestrians so that way they can cross the crosswalk or use the roadways traffic lights traffic lights yes traffic lights these are my favorite right they're the most important thing on the road do you know what they mean all right we're going to start with one does anybody know what this one means that's a red light it me stop red light means stop just like what else what else means stop what other what other thing is red that we know the stop sign right it's the same thing the red light means stop what does he yellow means slow down slow down the yellow means slow down the green means go very good now what do we do when the light goes from red to Green even though it says to go what should we always do look look both ways all the time it's very important that we look both ways before we go riding bikes is fun and it's also great exercise but it's important to stay safe wear a helmet pay attention to street signs and follow the rules of the road bye e
