Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] the Caribbean is a group of islands and nearby coast in the Caribbean Sea it's known for its warm weather beautiful beaches and different cultures the Caribbean is home to more than 26 countries and territories each with its own unique traditions languages and foods hi Kid Vision kids it's me Miss Penny and today we are at the Island Space Museum to find out about the Caribbean so exciting let's go i would love to take you guys on a tour of the museum but we'll start here where you can see like our wall our introductory wall where you can see a little bit of information about many of the countries in the Caribbean region do they speak different languages in each country so in the Caribbean you can find English Spanish French and Dutch languages spoken so each island or each country has a different language so you may have learned this at school that there are indigenous people when they came to when when when the Europeans came to North America indigenous means people that were there at the very beginning those are the original people that lived there before you know other cultures made their way around the world and these are some of the items that we have been donated um that represent those groups of people after we explored the museum it was time to taste some Caribbean food with Chef Tia hello are the Kid Vision kids and we are so interested in the food of the Caribbean can you tell us what we're going to make today oh yes oh I can't wait to tell you do you know bread fruit you don't know bread fruit what's bread fruit show me bread fruit which one is the bread fruit that one oh yes that's the bread fruit so today I'm going to show you bread fruits bread fruit is a tropical fruit with a texture like a potato it can be baked boiled or fried i'm going to show you inside okay all this you have you can't eat that raw you have to cook it so here you go pass it so you see the the smell is a little stronger so for me I think why they call it bread fruit is because when you cook it actually it tastes like bread but this is how it looks like before you cook it so I'm going to do this so you guys can try um the bread fruit air fried and in Haiti we eat this with spicy kleslaw so I'm not going to make the klelaw but I'm showing you what we usually you know eat it with but because you guys are so special I'm going to do like a a sauce for you okay chef Tia made a delicious sauce from ketchup mayonnaise mustard lime juice and salt we dipped our bread fruit in the sauce and it was delicious papaya you ready for the papaya yes she's cutting it she's cutting it long ways that's your papaya yes and it tastes good too enjoyed the food of the Caribbean thank you so much you everyone want to say thank you thank you kids thank you thank you for coming i want more important part of life in the Caribbean my friend Willie showed us some instruments put your hands in here go like this put your hands in there wave them like you really don't care and you go around go around and go go around so here we go 1 2 3 here we go mosquito one mosquito 2 m two [Music] higher [Music] excellent [Applause] one of our Kid Vision kids can play the drums could he play with you oh yes man come great looking it now in the next 10 years he'll be playing fantastic and he has it naturally so you put when you sit down you put like Excuse me yes put it between light all right and go ahead you start and I join go ahead move your bodies to the music [Music] one two three excellent excellent excellent excellent yay excellent wow good job great job this instrument oh yes this is I'm not a perfectionist on this instrument but this is from Shinda the steel pan is over 90 years old and they make it from barrels with you know oil drums and they tune it they cut it and they tune it and it can sound I'm not a player but I can hear it is it beautiful and so the different tones in Trinidad you have many bands steel band that play and they make it sound like symphony orchestra festivals too are a big part of life in the Caribbean they bring people together to play instruments dance sing wear colorful costumes and celebrate their history and culture hi Miss Stephanie what are we going to be doing here today so today we're going to be making headbands based on Bohemian Junko one of the celebrations uh celebrated in the Bahamas on Boxing Day the day after Christmas oh so what do they do at Junkanoo so at Junkanu there wear a lot of these kind of very intricate colorful uh costumes and leading headbands i have an example of a Bohemian Junkanoo headpiece here that we are going to be basing our head pieces off of this is made just paper colorful paper if you want to start off with your favorite color and put everything on there you can do that uh we have some crayons some regular beads different sizes make it more fun and exciting so we have some big ones here we have some small ones and of course of all different colors uh we have some feathers and some straws a lot of the costumes are not purchased most of them are handcrafted and handmade of different materials so uh these are actually not materials that would be too far off from some of the materials that could be incorporated into Bohemian Junko costumes then it was time for her own Junkanoo parade [Music] thank you so much we learned so much about the Caribbean today it was awesome did you have a good time yes say goodbye bye
