Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiphi kidish and kids it's me Miss Penny no it's not it's me Miss Penny and you know what today we're going to learn about puppets are you ready let's do some [Music] puppeteering I can't think of a better place to learn about puppets than an interactive Children's Art Museum my friend David is here to tell us all about puppets so puppet's not alive but we're using the puppets to help us communicate to tell a story there are different kinds of puppets and the first one that you mentioned was one that you put your hand in I got to get some hand puppets a hand puppet these are called hand puppets because you put your hand in them does anybody want to try one out okay which one do you come on take one come on step right up you've got the duck we've got frogs and dogs and owls everybody say hand puppet 1 2 three hand puppet very good is that the only kind of puppet there is no no what's another kind of puppet lime puppet with the strings lime puppet puppets with strings are called marionett wow kids let's pretend that you're marionette and our puppet here is going to manipulate us to we're going to lift our leg left leg oh boy and your hand wave hand wave and elbow kisses M look at that you can be a marionette too you just have to pretend that someone's lifting you with strings oh my goodness that's great so now you know about hand puppets and what kinds of Puppets are these These are marionette marinett can everybody say marionette marionette very good or string puppets string but they're still manipulated by you even though you're so far away from them another kind of puppet is a rod puppet you I do you know what a rod is it's another word for stick right one hand here on the rod and the other hand in here like her hand and there you go David told us about another kind of puppet this is this over here is my screen for my shadow puppets oh there's shadow puppet and you can make shadows that way so this puppet back here is my Little Red Riding Hood puppet do you guys want to and this of course is who's this guy the Wolf The Big Bad Wolf oh big bad wolf is a different one but it's still a wolf oh no oh no I don't know where I am somebody please help me well hello there little girl where are you going I'm looking for my grandma's house oh I'm good friends with your grandma well you have to go this way that way and then the other way and you get to Grandma's house oh thank you so much Mr Wolf goodbye I'll see you later that's great what is she doing she's walking and walking meanwhile at Grandma's house the wolf came and said I'm going to surprise her it's just going to be me uh do you think she's going to know knock knock KN knock knock come in oh my grandma what a deep voice you have the better to talk to you my dear when you tell your own story it could go however you want to tell it so the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood could be really good friends they are made out of paper so if you have a cereal box that's nice and stiff or or file folders or oak tag you could draw your puppets on it cut them out and put a stick on the the back or a straw or anything else these are just glued on now if you do not have at home a shadow screen like mine which you could tell your mom and dad is really just made out of a shower curtain then you could put your light in front and the shadow will look nice on the screen or on your white wall or any color wall well not a wall important thing is to have the light and then put the shadow between the light and the back draw yes I put the puppet between the light and the backdrop oh we're upside down gravity is gone we must be going to Mars another kind of puppet that you can make I'll just step across you here sure is a puppet made out of recycled materials now this was a tea box and I cut it out and this was part of an egg carton and I made whatever this is by just gluing it and cutting it together that's so cute I know what that what is it look he's got a tongue Hi how are you those are called object puppets because they're made out of objects that might be around bottles and envelopes and spools of thread and I don't know all kinds of stuff my friend Marie told us even more about puppets we have our Eco theater and we have puppets made from all sorts of objects and that's the fun part about coming here is that you can learn how to make puppets from everyday materials so we have paper bags we have recycled toilet paper rolls and puppets are really really important for our early development because we get to imagine and use our creativity and so it may just be a paper bag but what could that paper bag be yeah it's good for everybody's imagination young and old and I know there's different types of Puppets maybe we can make some puppets while we're here to show the kids at home how they can make their puppets I would love to I would too and the nice thing about puppets is that puppets really give kids a bouncing off point for imagination because they can create any kind of puppet they want to and the puppet can be anything and do anything sing anything it's endless endless you guys learned some cool puppets from Mr David what was this one called when you can put your hand inside it this one has the feet but I'll see you can put your hand inside it do you remember what this one was called hand puppet high five Elliot that's right hand puet job Elliot what about this one you talked about this type of puppet where you use an object what was this one you remember it's an an object puppet an object puppet so this one can be made from anything so we have a lot of materials on the table but I want us to go shopping oh I love shopping for materials that we have to recycle reduce and reuse are you ready yes all right we're going to come on this side the first thing you want to think about the same way when you do with a story is to think about the character of your puppet okay is your puppet excited so if it's excited maybe the big eyes is your puppet maybe sad so maybe there's some small so we want to give our puppet feelings feelings feelings into that imagination little bit of unplugging talking finding out what that character is like and then coming up with a story line for your puppet it is fun to use puppets to act out stories and that's really important for children and dramatic play for them to be able to explore different feelings through their puppets we had so much fun learning about puppets today thank you so much bye bye
