This week it's “After The Thin Man” and here's a bit of trivia for you.
This is the first sequel to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay, also a first for a movie, After The Thin Man is the first instance of puppy dog adultery in cinema.
A bit about the director, W.S.
Van Dyke, he was a gold miner, a lumberjack, a railroad worker, and finally a mercenary before becoming a director.
He made movies for over 25 years and made 91 movies.
That's incredible.
He also directed four actors, two Oscar nominations, including, William Powell, Spencer Tracy, Norma Shearer, and Robert Morley.
After The Thin Man stars a killer trio; William Powell, Myrna Loy and James Stewart.
But here's the tea.
William Powell and Myrna Loy had such amazing chemistry on screen that everyone was like, oh my God, they're in love and having an affair.
But Lake Powell was engaged to Jean Harlow and he and Loy were actually just really good friends.
Okay.
So stop.
Anyway, After The Thin Man is just as strong as the original, in my opinion, and I do think a lot of it is due to Powell and Loy's dynamite chemistry.
Myrna Loy and William Powell made 14 movies together, and After The Thin Man was their sixth.
Lastly, I thought that Monty Python invented the joke where a character with a funny walk says, “walk this way” and the other character mimics their funny walk.
But upon my research, William Powell might actually be the first person to do this joke in a movie.
Good to know.
Such a solid joke still gets me to chuckle after nearly 90 years.
