(uplifting music) - For all of its sports teams, and there's no exception for the Jackets flag football team.
(spectators cheering) (marching band music) And then, of course, as you would imagine, the home team, if you will, the Auburn Tigers.
What an incredible opportunity for those young ladies to get a chance to play in just the second state championship game for flag football in Alabama, and to get to do it in your hometown, in Jordan-Hare Stadium, home, of course, of the Auburn Tigers of the SEC.
I can't imagine what's going through their hearts and minds as they came into this stadium.
Again, great support from their families and friends.
It is one of the things that makes this event, since they moved to Super 7 to campuses, that makes it all the more special.
We can't be more excited about being here for this game.
You know, we have a lot of people to thank, but Izell Reese, native of Dothan, Alabama, played college football at UAB, played in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, is now the executive director of NFL flag football, and so we're hoping to meet with Izell after the game.
He has done an incredible job of growing the game of flag football for boys and girls from the youth level.
And kudos to everyone at the Alabama High School Athletic Association, starting with Executive Director Alvin Briggs and the Central Board of Control for having the vision to add girls flag football, first of all, just to their rotation of sports, and then to include the championship game with the Super 7.
Folks, I can tell you, that doesn't happen everywhere.
And it is, again, a sign of what the AHSAA means to young men and women who compete in sports at the high school level in this state.
They're all about creating opportunities.
And this is one of the most exciting opportunities you can imagine.
All right, we're gonna take a break.
When we come back, Landrum Roberts, Susan Carrouthers, and we will be back here at Jordan-Hare Stadium in just a minute.
Landrum and Susan will set up the game, and then it'll be time for kickoff.
Oxford, Auburn, state championship.

And welcome in for a beautiful day for flag football here inside of Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, Alabama.
Landrum Roberts, along with Susan Carrouthers.
Susan, got an exciting week here in the championships, here in the state of Alabama, but it all starts this afternoon between the Auburn Tigers, the hometown team, if you will, from just down the road, taking on a very talented Oxford Yellow Jacket squad.
- That's right.
A beautiful day here in Auburn.
A big day and big week for the state of Alabama in high school sports, but specifically today for female sports, so happy to cover this game.
- Some of the impact players you're gonna see this afternoon presented by the Coach Safely Foundation.
- [Susan] That's right.
For Oxford, we've got number 22, Gabrielle Lindsey, at quarterback.
She's just a freshman, but an outstanding freshman she is.
And then for Auburn, we're also looking at their quarterback, Brooke Hallman, a sophomore for the Auburn Tigers.
- [Landrum] Well, buckle up.
It's gonna be a lot of fun.
It's the Flag Football Championships of Alabama.
And coming up, our keys to the game as we continue from beautiful Auburn, Alabama.

(siren wailing) - [Dispatch] 79-year-old male, difficulty breathing.
- Throughout my career, I've seen many crashes.
And a lot of the fatalities are from people who haven't worn their seatbelt.
- Cars have rolled over multiple times.
- I've had people end up in lakes, ravines.
I've been looking for people in the woods for a couple hours before.
- Usually, just about every bone in their body's broken, their organs have ruptured, and typically they die.
- You want to save a life?
Just simply click a button and put that seatbelt on.
- [First Responder] Seat belts really do save lives.

(upbeat music) (rock music) - [Landrum] So many wonderful traditions here on game day in Auburn, Alabama.
The Auburn High School marching band getting going, the eagle flight, whether it's rolling Toomer's Corner, Tiger walk.
It's an outstanding and beautiful afternoon here in Lee County.
And we're glad to be with you inside of Jordan-Hare Stadium, Pat Dye Field.
Landrum Roberts once again with Susan Carrouthers.
It is time for the flag football state championship of Alabama.
And let's get to the keys to the game.
It's gonna be a fast-paced game.
Several keys for both teams.
- [Susan] That's right, Landrum.
I talked to both coaches before the game.
Oxford Yellow Jackets, they actually run a Tampa Bay Bucs-style defense.
It's a dynamic defense.
A lot of moving parts there, so that's gonna be a key for them today.
Also, for them to keep scoring.
Obviously, to win any game, you gotta keep scoring.
But the Oxford Yellow Jackets have been outscoring their opponents dramatically during this playoff.
Then we move on to the Auburn Tigers.
Obviously, they've got the home-field advantage.
These girls got to sleep in their own beds last night.
That's always an advantage.
Not a far drive.
And we expect the Auburn crowd to be huge, to be loud, and to be all in for their team today.
- [Landrum] Yeah, the Auburn crowd, the Auburn faithful still filing in.
A good contingent of Yellow Jacket fans have made the trip as well.
Well, buckle up.
It's gonna be fun.
It's the state championship of flag football, and it comes your way next.
(rock music) (light piano music) - [Announcer] You're watching Alabama Public Television.

("Easy" by Lionel Richie) (rock music) - [Landrum] Welcome back inside beautiful Jordan-Hare Stadium.
It is time for the flag football championships of the state of Alabama.
We welcome you.
The Alabama Public Television High School Football Championships presented by Protective, offering life insurance, retirement and asset protection to help protect what matters most.
As you take a look at the Children's of Alabama coin toss taking place just moments ago, and it was Oxford who did not win the toss.
They will get the ball to start on offense.
And we send it down to the third member of our team, Christina Chambers.
- Well, Landrum, both these head coaches are in their second year of coaching.
For Oxford head coach Wes Brooks, he may coach football and baseball, but he says coaching girls flag football has been the best experience of his life, and watching his team walk out on this field has been unreal.
His message to them, "Go out there and have fun."
As for Auburn head coach Alison Link, she says, the Tigers, like you said, traveling just a few miles down the road to get here, they're familiar with this stadium, but she said her team walked out on the field, took their breath away.
She says, "Hey, girls, calm down.
Go out there, enjoy this moment, and play with that grit you have all season long."
- [Landrum] Thank you so much, Christina.
And we are just about to get started as you took a look at Alison link.
Of course, Wes Brooks will talk about his "two feet in" approach that he takes with his Yellow Jacket squad as they start out on offense, (whistle toots) as we get going inside of Jordan-Hare.
And quickly on the end-around, it's the Yellow Jackets.
And carrying it out for roughly a 10-yard gain around the right side, it is a name we're gonna be calling a lot, and that's Reygan White.
- [Susan] That's right, Landrum.
And you'll see, you know, how the girls hold these balls out in front when they run.
That's because you can't flag guard.
Can't have anything down there in the way of someone possibly pulling the flag.
- [Landrum] We'll have the running clock.
I'll tell you more about the rules of flag football here in the state of Alabama, (whistle toots) the high school level, in just a moment.
Illegal procedure, though, is called.
You still have flags, and not just the flags that they wear around the waist.
You still have officials and they can throw those yellow ones.
And that will upset Wes Brooks here early.
A look at Gabrielle Lindsey, quarterback for the Yellow Jackets.
A lot of the athletes, and we'll talk more about it, Susan, but they play sometimes more than just one other sport.
Some of these athletes are playing two, three sports.
- [Susan] Exactly, right.
A lot of basketball players.
- [Landrum] On the end-around, coming this way.
Turning the corner, past the 30.
(whistle toots) Flag pulled around the 35.
And there's an Auburn player down at the 25-yard line.
We'll check on the injured Tiger as quickly the training staff coming out.
Couldn't tell who that was, Susan, but she was laying face down there at the 25.
A very scary moment, obviously, but hopefully she is okay.
- [Susan] Yes, looks like she's up now and walking off the field on her own power.
- [Landrum] Check the number there.
It might have been Lanyaha Bowens.
- Second down with 26.
- Head hitting off the turf.
(whistle toots) So we will check on that.
And very dangerous any time the head is involved.
A flag is pulled.
It's the Yellow Jackets, once again, going with a ground attack.
Nice pursuit in the backfield.
We're down for a short game.
- Third down.
- [Susan] A big flag pull there.
And these girls are allowed to wear two different kinds of flags.
There's a belt that's stationary and the flags themselves come off.
Looks like this team's wearing the flag belts that the whole thing is removed.
They're held on by a clip.
(marching band music) - [Landrum] So the Yellow Jackets facing third down.
Four downs to cross that 20-yard mark.
And the pass complete.
(whistle toots) Crossing midfield, and down right there, but not before a Yellow Jacket first down, a big gain on third down.
You should take a look at the replay.
- [Susan] That's right.
A big run here, number 30.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] Xai Whitfield, who really makes them go.
And when they need things in the clutch, that's where the Yellow Jackets turn.
- [Susan] That's right.
- [Landrum] So it is a fresh set of downs.
Just past the 50 for the Yellow Jackets.
Here in the opening frame, coming this way on the screen pass.
(whistle toots) They're cutting it upfield.
Good defense by the Auburn Tigers.
And pulling the flag right at the line of scrimmage, the Tiger defender.
- [Susan] Landrum, you mentioned that already, but the lines to gain here are the 20, the 40, and then the 20.
This is a shorter field.
(whistle toots) We'll talk more about that later.
- [Landrum] Asbury, Ware, Bowens, Pearson, Jackson, Parker, Allen, and Cleveland, the Tigers starters on defense.
(marching band music) Second down.
And off going the other way, that's Reygan white.
Reygan White, flag pulled.
(whistle toots) That play's gonna lose a couple of yards.
So after the big play to Whitfield and getting into Tiger territory, nice defensive play by Auburn.
(whistle toots) Coming up to make that stop was indeed Kristianna Ware.
- Third down.
- [Landrum] Third down.
The Jackets able to complete their last one.
Throws it up in the air.
Intercepted.
(whistle toots) (spectators cheering) The Tigers with the interception as the Yellow Jackets try to take a deep shot.
And coming up with that pick, it was Madison Allen.
Should take a look at the rules of flag football here in the state.
- [Susan] That's right.
Flag football.
Obviously, here in the state of Alabama, tackle football is king, but now we've got flag here in its second year.
There's some rules that are a little bit different.
Seven-on-seven, four quarters, 12 minutes each, three timeouts per half, touchdown is six points as usual.
But then there's a little bit different in the extra point.
The teams have to declare if they're going for one, two, or three.
(marching band music) - [Landrum] Southpaw, loading up, firing, and finding a receiver.
No flag pulled.
(spectators cheering) Well, we have our first score of the game and it's a touchdown, brought to you by the Department of Human Resources, changing lives for families throughout Alabama.
- [Announcer] That play covered 70 yards.
- [Landrum] 70 yards on the opening play for the home team, if you will, Auburn Tigers.
- [Susan] That was Syriah Daniels.
I hear that she is already committed to play basketball for Auburn.
Might be one of the only females to play on this field and play in the basketball arena.
- [Landrum] Look at Wes Brooks.
Still very early, but Auburn, they're opening possession, opening play, making it happen.
(whistle toots) And quickly firing out to the left.
The conversion- - [Announcer] The point effort is no good.
- [Landrum] Incomplete, no good.
And so it's 6-0 to Auburn here early, as you have the running clock, as you see it there on your screen.
So you couldn't have asked for a better way to start for Alison Link, the head coach for the Tigers, and it all started on the defense event.
(whistle toots) Good coverage.
Ball overthrown just a little bit, Susan, but then how do you capitalize after a turnover?
Well, that.
And it was Syriah Daniels with a spin move and several Yellow Jackets in possession, or in position, if you will, to pull the flag.
They just couldn't do it.
We're back on offense.
Xai Whitfield, this young lady.
Center pass from Gabrielle Lindsey.
That'll bring up second down.
- [Susan] That's right.
Gabrielle Lindsey, an outstanding player.
We've mentioned already, she's just a freshman.
She's got a bright future ahead of her.
- [Landrum] Yellow Jackets will try to answer.
In the early going, the Auburn High School band, cheerleaders, and a big crowd getting going early.
Down the far sideline, cutting it up (whistle toots) is Reygan White.
We've called her name already a couple of times this afternoon.
And you see where Oxford likes to go, and that's to the ground.
- [Susan] That's right.
Reygan White, she is a great player.
Number one, she's a senior.
(whistle toots) - [Announcer] First down, Oxford, at the 39.
- [Landrum] We saw the athleticism.
It's so key, and we've already seen it.
And they wear the three flags, but looks a lot easier than it is.
But Auburn early has had no problems in pulling the flag.
Third time we've seen an Auburn defender there in the backfield.
And they do it again.
- [Announcer] Stopped in the backfield by number two, Kristianna Ware.
- [Landrum] Stop made that time by Kristianna Ware.
Bring up second down.
- [Susan] And, Landrum, another rule about the flags.
They have to actually be positioned in a certain position.
One on each hip, and then one across the tailbone.
- [Landrum] You saw Oxford wide receiver Ashlyn Burns in the shot.
Her number eight.
Yellow Jackets going to the air again.
(whistle toots) Incomplete.
So we're looking on this near side, and I believe they were trying to go back to Ashlyn Burns.
- [Announcer] Gabrielle Lindsey pass is incomplete.
Intended for number eight, Ashlyn Burns.
- [Landrum] Look at Alison Link, the Auburn head coach, assistant on the Auburn softball team.
(whistle toots) So bring up third down for Wes Brooks and the Yellow Jackets, trailing by six, just north of four minutes left with the running clock, and then we will have time stoppage following the first few minutes of play.
(spectators cheering) That ball is picked.
Going the other way.
(whistle toots) Second interception by this Auburn defense.
- [Announcer] Pass intercepted by number 12, Aaliyah Parker.
- [Landrum] Aaliyah Parker.
(spectators cheering) (marching band music) - [Susan] And, you know, Landrum, we had some bad weather move through here last night, but fortunately it turned off to be a beautiful day.
I was down on the field earlier.
Field is dry.
I think it's helping these girls with the speed of the game.
- [Landrum] Aaliyah Parker reading that perfectly so.
Two critical turnovers here early.
And let's see if Auburn can capitalize as they did last time.
Pitch to the outside.
(whistle toots) And we'll send it down to Christina Chambers once again.
Hey, Christina.
(marching band music) We will send it back to Christina in just a moment.
Good defensive play that time by the Yellow Jackets trying to hold this Auburn squad.
Put up a lot of points versus Auburn, feeding Hoover.
Auburn going to the air.
When you see the arm of the quarterback for the Auburn Tigers, that's Brooke Hallman.
Now we'll send it down to the third member of our team, Christina Chambers.
- Landrum, you talked about Syriah Daniels who scored that first touchdown for Auburn.
She is the daughter of former Auburn basketball player Marquis Daniels who went on to play in the NBA.
She says, "Hey, I got my talent from my dad."
She's quick, she's fast, and that's one of the things that coach Alison Link stood out to her about Daniels.
And she's one that will fight and get it done on the field, as you saw in that first touchdown.
- [Landrum] Yeah, Marquis Daniels, what an outstanding career he had.
Not only here on the plains, but, as you mentioned, an NBA career and then as an assistant.
And now back as an assistant with the program as Auburn trying around, going around the left side (whistle toots) there with the quarterback, number 23, Brooke Hallman.
Brings up a big third down, Susan.
It's Auburn working inside of Yellow Jacket territory.
The Jackets have gotten stingy, though, since Auburn had the interception.
(whistle toots) Flag is down in the backfield.
We will check the call.
As Hallman hit the ground, a Yellow Jacket defender collided with Hallman.
- [Announcer] Personal foul.
Roughing the passer.
Defense, 10 yards.
(spectators cheering) Automatic first down.
- [Landrum] Wes Brooks has gotta be beside himself.
Just the unnecessary penalty.
It was a hustle penalty, Susan, but you were about to get bailed out and then you have that happen.
Unfortunate.
- [Susan] That's right.
It's a non-contact sport, but obviously it can still get a little rough at times.
You can set a pick.
You gotta be still, though.
There's no moving screens.
- [Landrum] Wes Brooks, I loved reading about when he took over this program and he asked his players, especially the linebackers, "Do you want me to go football terminology, like the Mike, the Sam, the Will linebacker?"
"Or, he said, "do you want me to call you something else, like Samantha?"
They said, "No, we want to be called by the football terminology."
And the "two feet in" approach, and he sells that to the program, to the players, to the parents.
Things are gonna go good, you gotta be 100% bought in.
Things go bad, you gotta be 100% bought in.
(whistle toots) - [Susan] That's right.
He talks about his team and their ability to adjust and their ability to just learn these football rules and learn the game.
It's been outstanding.
- [Landrum] Whoops.
Actually, coaching a couple of his players' parents, his days at Walter Wellborn.
Here in end of the quarter, it's Hallman.
Surveys the defense on second down, Hallman throws to her left, throws it back this way.
That's trouble.
(whistle toots) It's a touchdown.
(spectators cheering) Another touchdown for the Auburn Tigers brought you by to the Department of Human Resources, changing lives for families throughout Alabama.
And that time, Susan, they made it look easy.
- [Susan] They sure did.
Brooke Hallman, such a strong passing game there.
- [Landrum] As they will try the conversion.
Auburn trying to add to their lead here early.
Not much to complain about for Tiger head coach Alison Link.
Throw back, going up, skying to get it.
Guess who?
Syriah Daniels.
- [Susan] Once again.
- [Landrum] Saw her dad do that a time or two in his basketball career.
Syriah Daniels going up to pull it in.
13-0.
- [Susan] Using that height.
- [Announcer] At the end of the first quarter- - [Landrum] On top of Oxford, we're in the flag football championships in the state of Alabama as it was Hallman going up, using the size advantage of Syriah Daniels.
We're back to Auburn in a moment.
(rock music) (crowd cheering) (jazzy rock music) - [Musician] I know it's early, but it's okay to move around in your seat and do what you got to do.
(jazzy rock music continues) I want everybody in here to clap with me on this one, all right?

(uplifting music) (gentle guitar music) - The famous Goal Line Stand, one of the most celebrated moments in Alabama sports history.
The Tide was leading the 1979 Sugar Bowl when Penn State moved the ball to within 10 inches of the goal line.
Barry Krauss and Marty Lyons leaped over the pile to stop Nittany Lions running back Mike Guman and preserve the Tide's victory.
The win handed coach Paul Bear Bryant his fifth national championship.
(rock music) - [Landrum] Welcome back inside of Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Wonderful afternoon for football, flag football, here in the state of Alabama.
But it doesn't stop this afternoon.
Coming up tonight, keep it right here.
Thompson and Auburn, the rematch.
A game we saw a couple of years ago.
A fantastic finish by Mark Freeman and the Thompson Warriors.
An amazing comeback.
And we'll get to some of the other games you're going to see, (whistle toots) but such an exciting week here in Auburn, Alabama.
Beautiful weather today.
64 degrees, wind gusting at 22 miles per hour.
(whistle toots) How much that plays a factor with the passing game, it's Oxford trailing 13-0 here in the early going, trying to get something going offensively.
We'll send it down now.
Christina Chambers is standing by.
Christina.
(whistle toots) - [Christina] Well, guys, Wes Brooks of Oxford, his theme all season long has been "two feet in."
That's one thing he told his players before the season started.
Each player has to have two feet in to be successful.
He goes, "Even if you're on the sidelines cheering players who are on the field," he said, "we need everybody to buy in."
And that's the motivation he's giving his team now.
They may be down 13-0, but he says, "Keep two feet in and keep grinding."
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] Thank you so much.
You're right.
13-0, that's nothing in flag football.
Xai Whitfield catching the pass.
Now the Yellow Jackets back at it.
That's Whitfield.
(whistle toots) Her flag pulled, just shy of the 40.
- [Susan] The Yellow Jackets trying to get something going here so they can get on the board.
- [Announcer] Stopped by number three, Lanyaha Bowens.
- [Landrum] Just shy of a first down, so it will bring up third down.
(whistle toots) - [Announcer] A gain of eight, second attempt.
- [Landrum] Look at Xai Whitfield.
- [Announcer] Second down.
- [Landrum] Yellow Jackets going to the ground game early, and a couple of interceptions, almost been able to capitalize.
Back to the air, Yellow Jackets go.
Kept from Reygan White, in between two Auburn defenders.
Incomplete.
- [Susan] Good throw there, just a little bit too long for the receiver.
- [Landrum] Wes Brooks not afraid to take shots here early.
Just unfortunately, for Brooks, his quarterback Gabrielle Lindsey hasn't been able to hook up.
And so far, the Auburn Tigers in the secondary are doing the job.
- [Announcer] Fourth down.
- [Susan] Yeah, I read about Gabrielle Lindsey, and her quote was that she likes to show off her rocket arm.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] So that'll bring up fourth down.
- [Announcer] Katie Kennedy in punt formation.
- [Landrum] They declared a punt.
See if that wind plays a factor.
Maybe not.
The ball bouncing, rolling around.
(whistle toots) And that's where they will mark it.
Not a bad punt, end-over-end kick.
- Ball travels 39 yards.
- And once again, we'll see the Auburn Tigers take over on offense.
And, Susan, they haven't had much of a problem here in the early going.
- [Susan] Yeah, Landrum, they have really been going on offense.
Things are really clicking for the Auburn Tigers.
- [Landrum] They certainly are.
We've seen Syriah Daniels as you take a look at Alison Link there on the sideline, the Tigers head coach.
But Syriah Daniels, her athleticism, and so far what they've been able to do with Brooke Hallman at quarterback is really keep this Yellow Jacket defense off balance.
We'll see if they're able to do it here.
Leading 13-0.
- [Announcer] First down from the 11.
- [Landrum] As we'll play in the second quarter.
Just over nine minutes left as we look at Brooke Hallman, sophomore.
Tigers going to go with the end-around, coming in motion, (whistle toots) and a good flag pull by the Yellow Jackets on defense that time.
- [Susan] They're moving in the wrong direction.
Brooke Hallman, though, she had 209 yards in air in the semi-final game, so obviously a good arm there, too.
Both of these quarterbacks matching up really well with the passing game.
- [Landrum] Syriah Daniels.
- [Announcer] Second down.
- [Landrum] Trying to get free there.
(whistle toots) (rhythmic music) Tigers, Hallman with the throw.
(whistle toots) The pass is caught, but not for very much as the flag was pulled there, so the Yellow Jackets facing third down and long.
- [Susan] Another good flag pull there.
One of the rules that has to do with their uniforms is those T-shirts have to stay tucked in so those flags are easy to get to for the defense.
- [Landrum] Sawyer Brooks, a Jacket defender, in on that play.
(spectators cheering) Hallman back to the air, (whistle toots) going up to grab it this time from the Auburn Tigers.
So take a look at the replay.
- [Susan] Yeah, a great completion here by Hallman.
Like we said, she's really got a good arm, you know.
Been strong all season as she continues here.
Let's see another look at it here.
- [Announcer] Illegal shift.
Offense.
(indistinct) is to the goal.
Replay the down.
- [Landrum] It was Madison Allen that was able to go up and get it, but an illegal shift called against the Tigers.
Big costly penalty.
(marching band music) And that big connection, quarterback and receiver.
Oxford Yellow Jacket Band has made the trip here to Auburn, enjoying themselves, (whistle toots) trying to keep this Yellow Jacket team fired up, trailing 13-0.
- [Susan] Really great environment here.
It's great to see how these schools come out and support these flag teams.
- [Landrum] Shadows cast, as you can take a look at Pat Dye Field, maybe that playing a factor.
(spectators cheering) (whistle toots) And what a play.
Well, they went right back to it.
The Auburn Tigers.
- [Announcer] Brooke Hallman's pass complete- - And it was- - Number two, Kristianna Ware.
- [Landrum] Kristianna Ware on the receiving end there.
That's what you look at when you look at Auburn, how many weapons they have at the skill positions.
- [Susan] You're really right, Landrum.
I mean, they just continue.
You know, Brooke Hallman's passing to all different receivers.
(whistle toots) The run game's good.
Everything's clicking for the Auburn Tigers.
(marching band music) - [Announcer] First down, nine from the 31.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] And a flag thrown from the sideline.
- [Announcer] False start.
Offense.
Five-yard penalty.
First down.
- [Landrum] So the false start by the Auburn Tigers.
That'll back them up five yards.
- [Susan] You know, Landrum, back to the environment and just the support that these schools show, we've talked about Coach Link, Alison Link for the Auburn Tigers.
She's also the softball coach.
And the softball team comes to all of the flag games (whistle toots) and they're very supportive of Coach Link and the Auburn girls flag team.
- [Landrum] Hallman out to Syriah Daniels.
(whistle toots) And a good flag pull that time by the Yellow Jackets.
- [Announcer] Hallman's pass complete to Syriah Daniels, stopped by number one, Reygan White.
- [Landrum] And the Yellow Jacket defender, I believe that was Sawyer Brooks, the linebacker.
- [Susan] There she is, Coach Link, like we said, the softball coach.
Very supportive softball team coming out to support the Auburn Tigers flag football.
- [Landrum] I don't know the exact enrollment of Auburn, but you got a lot of students here, a lot of the student body.
- [Susan] We sure do.
They've really filled up this side of the stadium.
- [Landrum] Well, you'd expect that.
Auburn High School just down the road.
Second down for Hallman.
She finds her receiver pacing down the sideline (whistle toots) after a big gain.
The flag is pulled, but Auburn on offense back in business.
And that was Kristianna Ware once again.
We've called her name a couple of times on this drive.
We should take a look.
Over 2,000, the enrollment of Auburn High School.
(whistle toots) And why not the fans just hang out here today?
You got the Auburn football team that's gonna be taking on Thompson, 7:00.
You keep it right here for that one.
- [Susan] Big day in the city of Auburn.
Really exciting.
- [Landrum] Get the tailgate set up, put some food on the grill.
End-around.
(whistle toots) A flag is thrown near midfield.
- [Announcer] There's a flag on the play.
- [Landrum] Madison Allen.
- [Susan] They got a fantastic defensive effort.
I mean, they are all over her.
One of them gets the flag pull.
- [Landrum] I like your chances if you have three defenders.
Swarming like yellow jackets on that play.
- [Susan] (chuckles) Exactly right, Landrum.
- [Announcer] Illegal block on offense.
That bell is declined.
Second half.
- [Landrum] So the illegal block against Auburn, Oxford declining it.
(marching band music) And so Auburn has not been slow.
If there's been a penalty, what have they done?
They've answered the bell, and it's been with big plays here in this first half.
I would not be surprised if they went outside and maybe another jump ball, (whistle toots) as the Oxford defense dropping back.
And they're well aware of it as Wes Brooks shouting instructions to his team, trying to keep Auburn out of the end zone to keep this score at 13-0.
(whistle toots) - [Susan] Yeah, Auburn just continues to march down the field.
A lot of things going right.
Even with some penalties and some things like that, it hasn't seemed to phase them at all.
(marching band music) - [Landrum] So Brooke Hallman surveying things as Wes Brooks trying to get an explanation from our head official.
Not really sure what the conversation's about.
As they'll talk things over, two of the officials in front of Coach Brooks discussing things.
And while they do, we'll send it down to Christina Chambers.
Christina.
- [Christina] Well, Landrum and Susan, coach Wes Brooks says... You talked about his formations earlier, and he says that- - Correction, the foul will be accepted.
- They started name them after animals.
And going back to when he was hired by Josh Niblett at Oxford in 2005, he says they started doing signals of an eagle, a hawk.
And he says, "Every time we come up with a new formation, I'll let the girls name it so they'll remember it."
And he goes, "They came up with a new one called snake."
He says, "Whatever it takes for them to remember."
- [Landrum] (chuckles) I love it.
(whistle toots) Well, that's Brooks.
There's some last second instructions to his defense.
(spectators cheering) Completion.
This side, Syriah Daniels in traffic.
As she crossed midfield, her flag was pulled.
- [Announcer] Stopped by number nine.
- [Susan] Syriah Daniels, just keep calling her name.
She's a real star on this Auburn team.
- [Landrum] Payton Brooks with the pull.
It's second down.
- [Announcer] Second down from the 39.
- [Landrum] Auburn working from our right to our left in the blue jerseys with the blue shorts.
Oxford in the road whites with the black shorts.
Tigers on second down.
Hallman threading the needle, (whistle toots) and once again finding a receiver in Madison Allen.
So whether it's Madison Allen, whether it's Kristianna Ware, whether it's Syriah Daniels, Hallman with all kinds of options.
And she looks so confident.
- [Susan] And consistent.
- [Announcer] Third down from the 49.
- [Susan] It's like she's been doing this forever, even though we know it's only two years.
- [Landrum] Third down.
And little 10 yards to go.
(whistle toots) Far sideline, what a grab.
Do they say she caught it?
Indeed she did.
(spectators cheering) Taite Pearson.
- [Announcer] That's the two-minute warning.
- [Landrum] Not a textbook catch, or, excuse me, not a textbook throw, but how about Taite Pearson in keeping the foot in bounds?
- [Susan] That's right.
Fantastic awareness of the football field and where she is.
And, you know, Brooke Hallman just continues to show off her receivers.
I mean, she can throw to anybody and make a completion.
- [Landrum] So we've reached the two-minute mark, so the clock will stop, running clock, until the final two minutes of each half.
As Hallman, looking downfield, thought about coming back this way, now she waits.
(whistle toots) And guess who?
The name we just called, Taite Pearson.
And it's another touchdown for the Auburn Tigers, and that's brought to you by the Department of Human Resources, changing lives for families throughout Alabama.
- [Susan] We'll watch this one more time.
We'll see Brooke Hallman, quarterback, roll out.
She looks at one receiver, doesn't like it and finds another one.
Again, just showing that consistency and versatility of this Auburn flag team.
- [Landrum] That's what I love.
Brooke Hallman looking to the left, goes to her next option, kind of looks off the defense, and then finds a wide open Taite Pearson.
Here's the conversion try.
Hallman, again, does it again.
(whistle toots) (spectators cheering) Rolling to her right, throwing with her left.
- [Announcer] Touchdown is good.
- [Landrum] And the extra point is good.
- [Announcer] Covered 69 yards in 10 plays.
- [Susan] Landrum, at this point, it's been all Auburn, hasn't it?
- [Landrum] It certainly has.
The Tigers winning 20-0.
And big reason why are big plays like this.
It's Taite Pearson able to haul it in and that set up this touchdown.
Hallman looks off the defense.
And it was Taite Pearson all alone, and then here on the extra-point try.
(spectators cheering) Finding a teammate, wide receiver Madison Allen.
20-0.
Alison Link and the Tigers couldn't have asked for much more with 1:35 remaining here in this first half.
- [Susan] It sure is looking good for them.
Just, again, consistency, over and over.
They're making plays.
- [Landrum] So Oxford trying to get things going, just get some kind of momentum heading into halftime as Gabrielle Lindsey comes this way with a pass.
(whistle toots) Quickly there, Taite Pearson.
How about that?
Catching a big one to set up a touchdown that she caught, back at it on defense, and a quick pull as that pass was completed to the Oxford wide receiver Ashlyn Burns.
(marching band music) - [Susan] Yeah, I know Oxford would really love to get in the end zone right here before halftime.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] Huge third down for Wes Brooks as he looks over his play sheet.
Late substitution coming in for the Yellow Jackets.
- [Susan] This is a key third down.
- [Landrum] He says one six.
I don't know what animal that might represent for Oxford on the play sheet, but they're going to the air.
It's just out of the outstretched arms of wide receiver Ashlyn Burns.
Not a bad-looking toss from Gabrielle Lindsey.
And Burns, if she's able to connect, she might have pay dirt, but instead it'll bring up forth down.
And 1:02 seconds remaining for Wes Brooks in Oxford.
And now, really not much of a decision, you gotta go for it.
The problem is, you don't get it, you give Auburn a short field.
Lindsey looking around.
(whistle toots) And the flag is pulled.
(spectators cheering) Great defense by the Tigers of Auburn.
Coming up to make the stop, Kristianna Ware.
- [Susan] Yeah, and, Landrum, like you mentioned, you know the outcome of that play gives Auburn great field position.
- [Landrum] Lindsey just looking around.
Giving credit to the Auburn Tiger defense in the secondary.
Nobody was free.
It's a coverage set.
(whistle toots) So Auburn back at it.
Brooke Hallman, the quarterback, already with three touchdowns here in this first half.
Tigers looking for more.
53 seconds remaining.
They're going to the air.
(whistle toots) And, boy, breaking late, Madison Allen and Hallman just got too much on that pass, but it was Allen, once again, beating her defender on the outside.
- [Susan] Yeah, you know, Landrum, we've talked about Alison Link being the softball coach there at Auburn.
Wes Brooks, he's also a baseball coach.
He's one of 16 baseball coaches in Alabama that's won over 500 games.
So both of these coaches outstanding in multiple sports.
- [Announcer] Second down, five from the 25.
- [Landrum] You got Mark Freeman, who's head coach of Thompson.
Three-time state champion.
Won a lot of baseball games.
Bessemer Academy, his early days.
(whistle toots) That pass tipped up, could have been interception, falls to the turf here on Pat Dye Field as Auburn- - [Announcer] Broken up by number one, Reygan White.
- [Landrum] Taking their shots with 41 seconds remaining.
You should take a look here.
- [Susan] Yeah, we'll look at it one more time.
A great-designed play there, but didn't work out the way that they had planned.
- [Landrum] Reygan White going to knock it away.
Third down for the Tigers.
Hallman rolling that way.
She actually had a receiver open.
Comes back down to this side, (whistle toots) running down this nearest sideline, and forced out of bounds, five yards shy of a touchdown.
Adrianna Ware.
- [Susan] You know, Landrum, I think it's really impressive just the poise and confidence of these girls.
Like we've said over and over, this sport only in its second year.
Yeah, let's take one more look at this last play.
- [Announcer] Timeout, Auburn.
- [Landrum] Hallman rolling, faking, and then throwing it back across her body to Kristianna Ware.
And then Ware, I think, maybe she was waiting for a whistle, thinking maybe her flag had been pulled.
It had not.
- [Announcer] Have you tried Coke Zero Sugar?
- [Landrum] And I love keeping that ball extended, running down the sideline.
And timeout is taken with 30 seconds left, and the Tigers trying to add to their 20-0 lead.
But it was Madison Allen that had actually broken free, but right now it's not mattering.
It's Hallman, whoever she goes to, she's having success.
And so now for Wes Brooks and the Yellow Jackets, it's concern time.
Trailing by 20.
(whistle toots) And as for the Yellow Jackets, a bit more of a drive, as you see, knocking off Central Phoenix City in the quarter finals.
(whistle toots) - [Susan] You know, Landrum, I was saying earlier, these girls, I mean, they look like they've been doing this forever.
It's really impressive.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] Hallman trying to find Taite Pearson.
- [Announcer] Pass ball's incomplete.
Second down.
- [Landrum] That pass incomplete.
27 seconds left.
A good look at Taite Pearson, already with a touchdown.
(whistle toots) Couple of big catches here in this first half of play.
(spectators shouting) Hallman on second down.
Plenty of time left for the Tigers.
All they need is five yards.
Throwing it up.
Knocked away.
(whistle toots) A dangerous pass by Hallman as she was trying to find her receiver, Syriah Daniels, but well-defended by the Yellow Jackets.
- [Susan] She was covered up that time.
Good defense knocking that ball away.
- [Landrum] So that'll bring up third down.
Six seconds elapsing on that last play.
(marching band music) Brooke Hallman goes across the middle (whistle toots) and she finds Kristianna Ware for the Auburn touchdown.
Touchdown brought to you by the Department of Human Resources, changing lives for families throughout the state of Alabama.
26-0 our score, all Auburn.
We should take a look at another touchdown from Brooke Hallman, this time to Kristianna Ware.
- [Susan] That one looked a little bit like a tackle there.
- [Landrum] One point.
(whistle toots) Point after try from the three.
Offside is gonna be the call.
- [Announcer] There's a flag on the play.
- Encroachment.
Defense.
Half the distance to the goal.
Replay the try.
- [Landrum] So they'll move it up, make it just a little bit easier.
26-0.
It's the flag football state championships of Alabama.
Landrum Roberts, Susan Carrouthers, Christina Chambers.
Glad you could be with us.
Exciting first day of championship action.
(rhythmic music) As the Auburn High School Tigers are playing their first flag football state championship.
Hallman finds it incomplete.
Good job of the Oxford defender to knock it away late as she was going back to Kristianna Ware.
But it's 26-0.
17 seconds remaining in this half.
You can stick around for halftime 'cause these games roll pretty quick.
- [Susan] They do.
- [Landrum] Flag football here in the state.
And the five-minute halftime, we'll have it here.
Here's Alison Link.
You know, if she ever planned that her team would be ahead by 26 over this very, very well coached... Look at Wes Brooks' Oxford Yellow Jacket team, the Yellow Jackets, with a little bit of time, try to scratch the scoreboard.
- [Susan] Yeah, it's actually really surprising that Oxford hasn't been able to get any points on the board.
Like we said at the beginning of the game, they've been scoring like crazy during this tournament, so I know they'd love to get it in the end zone here before halftime and get something going.
- [Landrum] Gabrielle Lindsey going to the playmaker.
Xai Whitfield threw it behind her.
(whistle toots) Bring up second down.
(marching band music) - [Susan] We talked about some of the rule differences.
You know, it's also worth noting that these players can't wear jewelry.
I guess that could get in the way of some of the flag pulls.
They can't have untucked shirts, belt loops, pockets.
- [Landrum] Cross the middle.
Incomplete.
(whistle toots) Well, Gabrielle Lindsey, that's a couple of times.
And that's uncharacteristic for Xai Whitfield to let that one drop.
- [Susan] Yeah, they really need to get a rhythm going.
It's something they just haven't been able to get going yet, this game.
And hopefully coach Wes Brooks can help them out at halftime.
- [Landrum] Third down here with 11 seconds remaining.
There's confusion in the backfield there with the handoff.
And that play will lose yardage.
- [Susan] That's not the direction that Oxford wants to be going.
- [Announcer] Stopped in the backfield by number two- - [Landrum] Kristianna Ware, all smiles.
The Auburn Tigers, all smiles.
Auburn forth down.
And for Wes Brooks here, he can go ahead and declare that you got a punt.
I don't know why you would try to give a short field.
- [Announcer] That is the end of the first half.
- [Landrum] I'll officially end our first half of play.
It's Auburn leading Oxford 26-0.
Take a look at Alison Link, who's gonna be making her way over to Christina Chambers handling sideline duties for us today.
And, Christina.
- All right, coach, you're in control of this one.
What seems to be working for you guys?
- Our defense is doing a great job.
They're playing tough, no big plays.
And offense, it's working, we're making a mess.
You know, it seems to be going all right right now.
- [Christina] Any adjustments in the second half?
- There are some adjustments we need to make, just with offense.
There's a few plays that we're still working a few kinks to that we want to perfect and get them down.
Defensively, we're doing a great job.
I think there will be a tweak or two, but nothing huge, right in the second.
- All right, Coach, good luck in the second half.
- Thank you.
- [Landrum] Wow.
Alison Link's saying there's still a couple of plays that they need to perfect.
I can't wait to see those plays, because they looked perfect in this first half.
- Sure did.
- [Landrum] 26-0, Auburn on top of Oxford.

It's halftime of the girls flag state championship game.
I'm here with Oxford head coach Wes Brooks.
Coach, you're down 26-0 at the half.
What adjustments do you need to make to eliminate those explosive plays and turnovers?
- You know, our girls are in right positions.
We just kind of barely missed some flag pulls there at the end.
I don't think we're in any bad positions.
They're playing hard, they're hustling.
A few dropped balls.
The wind's been a problem a little bit, but we should have that in our backs for going into the second half.
So we gotta run our two-minute.
We gotta move the ball down the field.
We got a big arm.
We've done this before.
We've been in this position before.
We embrace the adversity, and we just gotta overcome it and be resilient.
- All right, Coach, good luck in the second half.
- All right, thank you.
- Thank you so much, Christina and Coach Brooks.
"Two feet in," that's what he says.
He says, "We faced adversity before."
He mentioned the wind.
How much will the wind be a factor tonight in our 7A championship game that begins at 7:00, and you can keep it here.
Thompson and Auburn, the rematch, what happened just a couple of years ago inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium.
We got the 3A championship coming up tomorrow, Piedmont and St. James.
And then also the 1A state championship coming up tomorrow afternoon, Pickens County and Leroy.
How about those Bears?
The 5A championship coming up tomorrow night, part of the triple-header with Ramsay and Charles Henderson.
Then the foray the following day beginning at 11:00 with Cherokee County and Andalusia.

And Mountain Brook and Saraland to cap things off.
That is going to be so exciting.
A very good Mountain Brook club coached by Chris Yeager.
And also Saraland, their undefeated run, and some exciting games they've had in the playoffs.
(whistle toots) But here, we got a doozy.
26-0 nothing in the flag football state championship.
Auburn who will have the ball to start things out.
We heard their head coach Alison Link when she visited with Christina before halftime, saying, "There's still some plays we want to perfect."
We'll see if that happens.
And Wes Brooks has gotta be happy with what he saw.
He said, "We were in good positions, Susan.
We just had some trouble with flag pulls."
No trouble with the flag pull there.
- [Susan] That's right, that was a good one.
That was great defense.
You know, coach Wes was just cool, calm and collected.
I mean, didn't seem worried at all that his team is down by 26.
- [Landrum] There's a quick look at Madison Allen wearing number 20 for Auburn.
If you're just joining us, Auburn wearing the royal blue, I guess you would say, jerseys and the shorts.
Oxford wearing the white with the black shorts.
- [Susan] Auburn High School, not orange and blue, like their neighbors.
Just blue and white for Auburn High School.
- [Landrum] Taite Pearson, (whistle toots) couple of big grabs in that first half.
One included a touchdown that was set up by a Taite Pearson.
Wonderful catch, but good defense that time by Oxford to pull the flag.
And you see Wes Brooks seeing some improvement.
He said, "Hey, we like adversity, we embrace it."
- [Susan] That's what he said.
And he said these girls are so good at making adjustments.
So we'll see if that plays out here in the second half.
- [Landrum] Huge third down here.
Brooke Hallman, sophomore quarterback, I mean, she did it all in the first half for these Tigers with the four touchdowns.
And she's so patient and calm, standing back there in the pocket.
(whistle toots) Almost had an interception.
We wouldn't have seen the calmness there, stepping in front of it.
Almost coming up with a pick six.
- [Susan] Yeah, they wish they could have had that one.
I think she would've been free and clear to the end zone.
- [Landrum] Peyton Brooks read it the entire way, but unfortunately, it went through the hands, hit off the chest.
(whistle toots) And Auburn has declared a punt.
So Wes Brooks, exactly what you talked about with your team at halftime, the three-and-out and getting the ball back, trying to get something go offensively.
- [Announcer] Hallman in punt formation.
- [Landrum] This punt brought to you by the Electric Co-ops of the state of Alabama.
Couldn't do it without those guys.
Punt fielded, bobbled and dropped.
And that's where the Yellow Jackets will take out, or start out for their first offensive possession of this second half.
So early observations of what you saw in the first half for Oxford offensively versus what you think we'll see here in the second half.
- [Susan] Well, we didn't see a lot from Oxford offensively in the first half.
So I'm hoping that they can turn it around here and get some momentum.
Maybe that stop their defense just made will shift the momentum.
- [Landrum] Receivers gotta help out Gabrielle Lindsey as her first pass is complete to Xai Whitfield.
Xai Whitfield with two uncharacteristic drops.
She is their playmaker on the offensive side of the ball on a good start.
- [Susan] You know, Gabrielle Lindsey, I read a lot about her.
She's fascinating.
She's a freshman.
(whistle toots) She's over six feet tall.
I think we've already mentioned her rocket arm that she says that she likes to show off.
She always wanted to be a quarterback.
So, here, getting to live out her dream in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
- [Landrum] Didn't we all always wanna be quarterbacks?
Some of us were just never, never picked, even two-hand touch at Thanksgiving.
- [Susan] Yeah, I don't know if I had that dream.
I think I'm living my dream right here with you, Landrum.
(chuckles) - [Landrum] You're too nice.
That pass incomplete.
Not a bad throw, but unable to haul it in.
You should take a look at Sawyer Brooks or, excuse me, that is Ashlyn Burns.
Look at defense, you have Taite Pearson back there as Burns hit the turf.
- You know, Landrum, even though that was an incompletion, I feel like I'm seeing a little bit of a spark from Oxford that I didn't see in the first half.
- [Landrum] Lindsey loads up, fires.
(whistle toots) Incomplete.
Well, the closest player to it was the Auburn defender, and back there and playing centerfield was Asbury.
And the pass incomplete.
When it's in the wind, and even Coach Brooks, as you see right there, he alluded to a 22-mile-an-hour gust.
That's significant.
- It is.
- [Landrum] Rain not so much, throwing the football, but quarterbacks will tell you wind can do all kinds of crazy things to the trajectory of a football.
- [Susan] We're looking right up there at that American flag and it's just, it's straight out blowing.
- [Landrum] It's third down for Oxford.
Loading up, firing, finding Whitfield.
(whistle toots) But right there at the point at the catch, the pull of the flag, Lanyaha Bowens.
- [Susan] It's a good positive yardage here for Oxford.
- [Landrum] Flag whipping around, changing directions.
- [Announcer] Fourth down from the 29.
- [Landrum] Fourth down.
Oxford, to Whitfield.
Pearson now, (whistle toots) right there, read it beautifully.
Her job was to make sure she followed number 30 for the Yellow Jackets, and she did.
And it'll be a turnover on downs for Oxford.
So Oxford able to get the defensive stop of Auburn, get the three-and-out.
You can't capitalize on the offensive side of the ball.
(whistle toots) - [Susan] As Auburn's offense takes the field again.
- [Landrum] Here's a look at Taite Pearson, number seven.
She'll line up, a wide receiver, after the great stop on fourth down for Pearson, the Auburn Tiger offense.
Back on the prowl, it's Brooke Hallman, the sophomore quarterback.
A little misdirection, maybe one of those perfection plays that Alison Link was talking about.
You had a lot of eye discipline that you had to adhere to if you were Oxford, a lot of moving parts, and the play able to pick up a couple of yards as Brooke Hallman took the handoff.
- [Susan] Brooke Hallman's showing her versatility there, Landrum.
You know, she's able to run, too.
- [Landrum] Alison Link giving some instruction for the defense pacing the sideline, the Auburn sideline here inside of Jordan-Hare.
Brooke Hallman on second down.
Back this way.
(spectators cheering) (whistle toots) Pass is complete.
It's Kristianna Ware.
We called her name several times in the first half, Susan.
- [Susan] Several times.
Like we keep saying, I mean, it's Brooke Hallman can basically throw to anybody out there on her offense and make a completion, pick up positive yards.
The Auburn team just marching down the field yet again.
- [Landrum] It's nice when you have a plethora of weapons outside.
- They do.
- And especially when you have the size and the speed that this Auburn team has.
It is a third down.
A little bit north of five minutes left here in this third quarter.
Auburn trying to add to their 26-0 lead.
Landrum Roberts, Susan Carrouthers.
Glad you could be with us as we kick off championship week here in the state of Alabama.
(whistle toots) Completion on this near side.
It's Kristianna Ware with the reception, the flag pull.
And it's a first down.
- [Announcer] Play picks up nine yards.
- [Susan] Not sure what happened there, Landrum, with her flag.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] So they spot the football, and Auburn's still in business, cranking on this possession.
Brooke Hallman surveys the defense, gets her play call.
She rolls, throws it across her body.
(whistle toots) Taite Pearson coming across.
And the flag is pulled.
A good stop by the Yellow Jackets.
We now send it down to the third member of our crew, Christina Chambers, who's standing by.
- [Christina] Well, Landrum, coach Alison Link for the Auburn Tigers, I asked her, I said, "Is there one person that you lean on to help with the rules and formations?"
And she said, "Yes," and he's right down the hallway from her.
Coach Keith Etheredge, who will play in the 7A state championship game tonight, he says that he was actually a flag footballer after he graduated from college.
So she says she's leaned on him on rule schemes and he says he's always an open door.
And she goes, "We walk every day beside each other and give each other a high-five."
- [Landrum] Loading up, firing, but intercepted.
Well, showing the hands on the defense, Xai Whitfield for Oxford.
- [Susan] And brings up another great opportunity for Oxford to shift some momentum.
We'll watch it one more time here.
Fantastic catch.
Good job staying in bounds, too.
Awareness on the field.
(marching band music) - [Landrum] Xai Whitfield dropping back deep.
(whistle toots) First interception thrown for Brooke Hallman this afternoon.
So Wes Brooks, his team being resilient, trying to capitalize.
(whistle toots) But the flag is pulled before quarterback Gabrielle Lindsey can release it.
- [Announcer] Gabrielle Lindsey sacked in the backfield.
- [Landrum] It's brought you by Hi.Ed.
All of our great sponsors this week and Hi.Ed.
- [Announcer] Second down.
- [Landrum] Included Hi.Ed, transition students into careers.
(marching band music) - [Susan] So many great sponsors here, Landrum, and the High School Athletic Association, just outstanding job.
- [Landrum] Lindsey loads up, fires, nobody home, as the ball short of what you would call the 40-yard line, dimensions of the field.
- And the pass incomplete.
- [Landrum] Little bit different than what we'll see for the rest of the week with the 7A championships tonight, all the way through the 6A championships that will wind out the week.
- [Susan] Yeah, they've got these white strips laid down so that it's easier to see, you know, the new dimensions of the field here for flag.
And then those will be removed for tonight for the 7A game.
- [Landrum] Wes Brooks, third down.
Oxford desperately needing it.
(whistle toots) When you had a receiver that got behind the defense, and that was Ashlyn Burns, but Lindsey's pass just behind Ashlyn.
And that'll bring up a forth down.
- [Announcer] Fourth down.
- [Susan] Oxford just continuing to fight, but just, you know, not able to get it going.
- [Landrum] Yellow Jackets declaring the punt.
(whistle toots) Not much of an option.
Deepen your own territory.
You certainly don't wanna give this Auburn Tiger offense a short field.
The punt coming down, fielded by the Tigers.
Bringing it back, Kristianna Ware.
(whistle toots) And Ware, flag is pulled.
But great starting position for this Auburn offense trying to add to a 26-0 lead, 'cause it was all Tigers in the first half.
Oxford's been able to get some stops here defensively, the interception on Auburn's last possession, but, so far, on the offensive end, there's not much going for the black and gold.
- [Susan] That's right.
The Yellow Jackets defense are really doing their team a lot of favors.
They just need their offense to check in and start scoring some points.
- [Landrum] Brooke Hallman, Auburn quarterback, four touchdowns in the first half.
Does have the pick.
She overthrew her intended receiver, but Auburn, yes, the center is eligible and there you see, once again, with some eye trickery, if you will, taking that one was Liz Robinson.
- [Susan] You know, Landrum, one thing I find interesting, just about these two teams as you match them up, and especially with considering the score, Auburn's got 16 players on their roster; Oxford's got 35, so almost double the size of their team, but Auburn just with so much talent.
- [Announcer] That is the end of the third quarter.
Time out.
(spectators cheering) - [Landrum] That is the end of the third quarter.
Time is running out for Wes Brooks and the Oxford Yellow Jackets.
They like this position, they embrace this position.
We'll see what happens, return to Lee County in a moment.
(rock music) (crowd cheering) (jazzy rock music) - [Musician] I know it's early, but it's okay to move around in your seat and do what you got to do.
(jazzy rock music continues) I want everybody in here to clap with me on this one, all right?

(uplifting music) (uplifting music continues) ♪ Do, do, do, do ♪ (family laughing) (rock music) - [Landrum] The time is running out for Oxford, but, man, if you're Auburn head coach Alison Link, very, very excited.
Landrum Roberts along with Susan Carrouthers.
Quickly, if you're just joining us, some different rules when it comes to flag football.
- [Susan] Yeah, that's right.
We went over some of these earlier, but we'll jump on down.
The safety equals two points.
No flag guarding, we mentioned that.
That's why sometimes the girls will run with, you know, holding the ball out in front of them.
They can't have their arms at their sides.
- [Landrum] We have a running clock, but stoppage the final two minutes of the first half and also the final two minutes of the second half.
So that would come into effect here.
But right now, Oxford needs to stop trying to slow down this Auburn offense.
They've been able to do it, trailing by 26 at intermission.
(whistle toots) Taite Pearson, the intended receiver, and a rare miss from Brooke Hallman to Pearson, as Pearson just left that Yellow Jacket defense.
And a break for Wes Brooks in that Oxford defense.
- [Susan] That's right.
Brooke Hallman going deep there, but it didn't quite work out.
Yeah, it could have been the sun that got in her eyes.
You know, she is looking right in the sun.
The field now about, you know, half in the shade, half in the sun.
Can feel the temperature dropping.
Probably a pretty tough look for quarterback Brooke Hallman.
- [Landrum] If you're looking at it from, I guess it would be the right end zone, for our viewers at home, and the silhouette, if you will, or where the sun is peeking through, it kind of looks like the outline of the state of Mississippi, if you can imagine that.
(whistle toots) Pass complete on this near side.
A flag does come down.
- [Announcer] Hallman's pass complete to Kristianna Ware.
- [Landrum] As you take a look at Kristianna Ware.
Once again, she's had a busy day.
And a good flag pull by the Yellow Jackets, but this one might come back.
Wes Brooks looks like he is saying, "Decline it."
We'll wait for the call.
- [Announcer] Flag guard on the offense.
10 yards.
Replay second down.
- [Landrum] Nevermind, he's not going to decline that one.
You certainly need that one.
- [Susan] That's right.
That flag guarding call, that is a big difference obviously between tackle football, that most of us are more used to, and this flag football game.
can't get in the way of those flags.
You gotta let the defenders be able to get to the flags.
- [Announcer] That bell is declined.
Third down.
- [Landrum] Okay, well, it is declined.
Saw them stepping it off.
I saw him waving his arms, (whistle toots) like you would see with an incomplete pass.
Then I thought maybe that's like a snake call or a dinosaur call.
- I was gonna say, could that be a certain animal?
- [Landrum] Yeah.
- [Susan] That he's trying to communicate to his team.
- [Landrum] Is that the spider?
What is that?
It'll be third down for Auburn there inside of Yellow Jacket territory, trying to add of the 26-point lead and take home their first flag football state championship.
Loading up, firing.
(whistle toots) And somehow, someway, Taite Pearson.
The unbelievable catch we've seen from Taite Pearson.
Maybe it's the sun.
- Well, it's the sun.
- [Landrum] We'll blame it on the sun.
- [Susan] That one hits her in the hands, though, and then just comes out.
Wasn't able to pull that one in.
- [Landrum] I think that was a great point by you with the sun, because as we looked at the replay- - [Susan] It's bright.
- [Landrum] Hard to believe that a receiver and the athleticism shown by Taite Pearson, she was not able to follow that ball in, and have to think that the sunshine's certainly a factor.
So it is fourth down for Auburn.
Hallman rolling back, firing this way.
Checks down to a receiver, (whistle toots) but a flag pull by the Yellow Jacket defense.
So a good stop by Oxford and Wes Brooks and the Yellow Jackets, with the clock rolling.
8:55 remaining here in this fourth quarter.
But trailing 26-0.
- [Susan] That's right, clock continues to run, but, you know, Oxford running out of time to score the points they need to.
- [Landrum] Gabrielle Lindsey gets instructions from Wes Brooks.
(marching band music) Lindsey throws it.
Xai Whitfield.
(whistle toots) Whitfield in traffic, collision with an Auburn defender, not after a nice pickup on first down.
- [Susan] We said it before, it's a non-contact sport, but, you know, sometimes there is some contact.
Nothing called there, though.
- [Landrum] The student athletes hard at it, competing for the top prize.
Look at the collision.
- Let's see it again here.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] Nowhere to go is Asbury, the Auburn defender, standing there in the way.
(whistle toots) And a pass on this near side and a stop made.
- [Announcer] Lindsey's pass complete to Reygan White.
- [Susan] Good completion there for Oxford, moving in the right direction.
- [Landrum] It's Reygan White.
And it was Aaliyah Parker coming up with the stop.
Quickly back this way as well.
Completion.
And hauling it in, Ashlyn Burns, wearing number eight for the Yellow Jackets.
Taite Pearson.
- [Susan] Oxford quarterback Gabrielle Lindsey actually played tackle football with the boys up until fifth grade.
She said it's always her dream to be able to do this and she's thrilled that she's finally getting to do it.
- [Landrum] Lindsey dropping back, showing that arm.
Too tall for Whitfield.
(whistle toots) - [Susan] She put a little bit too much power behind that one.
- [Announcer] Lindsey's pass is incomplete.
Intended for Whitfield.
- [Landrum] Showing the arm strength today, and not all of them have gone for completions, but you see why this Oxford Yellow Jacket team in the position they're in, playing for a state championship, just the athleticism you see at the quarterback.
- [Susan] You're right, Landrum.
They've thrown some rockets down this field.
- [Landrum] Lindsey loads up, gonna fire again.
That's trouble.
Almost picked off.
(whistle toots) - [Susan] Great coverage there by the defense.
They were right where there needed to be.
- [Landrum] Nivea Jackson can't believe it.
She's got a smile.
You can do that when you have one go through your hands.
What should have been or could have been a sure-fire interception, but your team leading 26-0.
It's third down for the Yellow Jackets.
6 1/2 or less than that to go.
Xai Whitfield.
(whistle toots) Once again, when Oxford is able to connect, you've got Auburn defenders all in the area.
And the flag pulling has been exceptional today, Susan.
- [Susan] You're right.
Just, you know, almost got away there.
Just the defense was in the right place at the right time.
Auburn right where there need to be.
- [Landrum] Well, forth down as we approach the six-minute mark.
Lindsey firing at the traffic.
(whistle toots) Whitfield able to come down with a catch.
- [Susan] Again, though, another great example.
The defender just right there, able to pull that flag.
- [Announcer] The ball goes over on downs.
- [Landrum] And a turnover on downs.
(marching band music) So Wes Brooks and Oxford, both scoreless.
That young lady you just saw in the shot, number seven for Auburn, Taite Pearson, a big reason why.
It's Tiger defense.
They have been on the spot today.
- [Announcer] First down over from 25.
- [Susan] Landrum, you know, I talk more about these quarterbacks and their ability to throw the ball down the field.
You know, it's interesting.
We're used to seeing passes like this on Pat Dye Field, but when you stop to think some of these girls are freshmen and they're able to make these passes, it's pretty incredible.
(whistle toots) - [Landrum] Using the legs, sophomore quarterback for the Tigers, Brooke Hallman.
And the flag pulled.
Coming up to make the stop for Oxford, Bella Reeves.
(marching band music) (whistle toots) - [Susan] Brooke Hallman there, once again showing her versatility, showing all the different weapons that Auburn has in their arsenal.
- [Landrum] Clock on the move, nearing the 4 1/2-minute mark of this fourth quarter.
Clock will stop the final two minutes.
Not a factor right now as Auburn comfortably ahead.
Hallman is stopped right around 25, 35-yard line.
We send it down to the field, Christina Chambers standing by with an Auburn Tiger.
Christina.
- [Announcer] Play loses five yards.
Third down, 15.
- [Christina] That's right, Landrum.
Oxford number 30, Xai Whitfield.
Yes.
- [Landrum] Third down Auburn with a comfortable lead.
Under four minutes to play.
Hallman winding up, firing.
Intercepted by Whitfield.
(whistle toots) Now we'll send it down to Christina Chambers, standing by with an Oxford Yellow Jacket.
Christina.
- [Christina] Well, Landrum, a lot of these players on both teams play multiple sports.
Well, last night Coach Brooks says, Hey, they decided to stay in Oxford and drive up this morning.
Because guess what?
Four of his players have played in a basketball game last night against Hoover.
One of those being number 30, Xai Whitfield.
He says it just shows the commitment that these girls have in any sport that they play.
- [Landrum] Thank you so much, Christina.
And there's Whitfield.
(spectators cheering) Better late than never.
Whitfield on the pass from her quarterback Gabrielle Lindsey.
That's what Oxford fans are used to seeing.
And it's a touchdown for the Yellow Jackets.
All of our touchdowns are being brought to you by our friends at the Department of Human Resources, changing lives for families throughout the state of Alabama.
- [Susan] Oxford getting on the board.
That's what these fans drove here to see.
- [Landrum] The conversion try.
Lindsey.
(whistle toots) No good as the flag was pulled shy of the goal line.
26-6.
2 minutes, 27 seconds left in this one.
- Okay, we'll look at this.
Look at this touchdown one more time.
Fantastic throw and catch.
- [Landrum] Saw the cut, adjusting to the ball.
Xai Whitfield knew exactly where it was.
The defenders didn't, overrunning it, and Oxford on the board.
- All that speed.
- [Announcer] It's also the official ball of the NFL- - [Landrum] It's the-two minute mark, the clock will stop.
- [Announcer] That is the two-minute warning.
And due to the score differential, that is the ball game.
(spectators cheering) - [Landrum] And because of score differential, the Auburn Tigers and their head coach Alison Link celebrating here in their hometown in front of a lot of blue-and-white-clad fans.
- [Susan] They are going crazy.
That game coming to a quick end, just what the Auburn fans wanted to see.
Such a huge day here in the city of Auburn, having their 7A boys tackle team playing tonight for a state championship.
(spectators cheering) - [Landrum] The crowd celebrating, and a very happy coach.
Let's see if they worked out all the imperfections with head coach of the Auburn Tigers and state-winning head coach Alison Link.
Christina.
- Coach, you guys were in complete control, dominated this one.
Can you put into words what it means to win this one in your home city in front of this crowd?
- I'm just so proud of them, that this crowd could see them do it.
We've got the whole town here and I'm just so happy that they came out.
We played like we could, I knew they could, and I'm just so proud of them.
- Emotional?
- What, no, no.
I'm just so happy for them.
It was a great game and I'm proud.
- Congratulations, Coach Link.
Thank you.
- [Landrum] Thank you so much, Christina, and coach Alison link trying to fight off the emotions, but as you look at those Auburn Tigers and several of those young ladies, as Susan trying to fight off the tears, a very tight-knit group and they're celebrating a state championship.
