WHY, THIS PIECE IS JUST AS SWEET AS NANCY IS HERSELF.

THEY HAD TO BE IN HALF-YARD AMOUNTS.
WHEN WE GOT THE RESULTS OF OUR QUILT CHALLENGE, WE DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS HALF-AND-HALF APPLIQUE AND PIECEWORK, SO WE'RE GONNA SHARE THE RESULTS WITH YOU TODAY ON OUR "APPLIQUE ARTISTRY" SHOW.
YOU'RE GONNA SEE RIBBONS ON ALL OF OUR PIECES.

SHE'S APPLIQUED IT IN PLACE, AND SHE'S ALSO ADDED EMBROIDERY WORK FOR ACCENTS.
NOTICE THAT THE KITE TAIL COMES ALL THE WAY DOWN AND ENDS IN A BOUQUET OF RIBBONS.

JEANNETTE LEDBETTER IS KNOWN FOR HER CRAZY PATCH, SO TO COMPLETE HER 5 FABRICS, SHE WENT AHEAD AND DID TWO BLOCKS IN HER CRAZY PATCH MOTIF.
IT'S ALSO HIGHLIGHTED WITH SOME BEAUTIFUL EMBROIDERY WORK, AND I THINK THIS WOULD BE A PLEASING PIECE FOR NOT ONLY THE WALL, BUT FOR A TABLE, ALSO.
ELLEN DELAHANTY ENTITLES HER PIECE "CANADA GEESE."
AND WE, OF COURSE, HAVE NAMED IT THE "BEST USE OF A LIVE SUBJECT" AWARD.
WHAT STANDS OUT IN ELLEN'S PIECE IS THE FACT THAT SHE HAS EXTENDED THE USE OF HER FABRIC BY REVERSING IT.
THIS IS THE REVERSE SIDE OF THIS FABRIC.

IT IS BASED ON A LIGHT BEIGE BACKGROUND THAT IS ENHANCED WITH MORE ORIENTAL DESIGNS, AND THEN REACHES OUT TO THE OUTSIDE WITH A REVERSE APPLIQUE IN THE WONDERFUL SCROLL WORK THAT GOES ALL THE WAY AROUND THE OUTSIDE.
NOTICE THAT EVEN HER DRAGON IS DOUBLE-SIDED, TWO SIDES ALL THE WAY LINED, ALL THE WAY AROUND HER FIGURE.
SUCH A LOT OF WORK FOR MAUDE AND AN EXCEPTIONALLY NICE PIECE.

THE HALF-INCH WAS REALLY TOO SMALL TO WORK WITH DIAMONDS.
AND SO THE FIGURES YOU MADE WERE DEVELOPED AFTER YOU STUDIED THE ACTUAL STORY.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN QUILTING, AMI, AND WHEN DID YOU GET STARTED?
I'VE BEEN QUILTING FOR ABOUT 10 OR 11 YEARS, AND I GOT STARTED BY DOING A RESEARCH PROJECT WITH THE OLD ORDER AMISH IN NORTHERN INDIANA.
I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO QUILTING AT ONE OF THE VERY FIRST CONTACTS WITH THE AMISH FAMILY.
I WAS INVITED INTO THE HOME, AND THERE WAS A QUILTING FRAME UP.
THERE WAS THE QUILT, THEY HANDED ME A THREAD AND NEEDLE, ASKED IF I WANTED TO DO IT.
I SAID YES, AND I GOT HOOKED.
TELL US ABOUT THIS QUILT.
IT'S A BASKET QUILT.
THIS IS A REPRODUCTION OF AN ANTIQUE AMISH QUILT IN ONE OF THE QUILTING BOOKS.
AND IT WAS JUST SHEER FUN TO DO FOR THE JOY OF MAKING THE STITCH.
YOU DIDN'T MIND WORKING ON THE BLACK FABRIC?
IT WASN'T HARD TO QUILT?

I QUILT AT NIGHT AFTER MY FAMILY HAS GONE TO BED, IN THE WEE HOURS, AND AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A GOOD LIGHT YOU CAN GET THE FINE STITCHING.

I'VE USED CHALK PENCILS WITH A LOT OF SUCCESS.
I STAY AWAY FROM SOME OF THE ONES THAT HAVE WAX MIXED IN BECAUSE THEY DON'T COME OUT AS EASILY AS SOME OF THE OTHERS.
I WANT TO TELL YOU, YOU'VE GOT MIGHTY TINY STITCHES.
YOU MUST HAVE SOME REALLY GOOD SECRETS.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

AND NOW, IS THIS YOUR PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH STUDY, OR WHAT IS THIS?
OH, I WENT TO A LITTLE SHOP IN PENNSYLVANIA, AND I BOUGHT A POSTCARD OF A WHIG ROSE QUILT.
AND I THOUGHT TO MYSELF SOME DAY I WOULD TURN THAT INTO A QUILT, NEVER REALLY BELIEVING THAT I ACTUALLY WOULD.
AND SEVERAL YEARS LATER, FOUND THE CARD AND WENT WITH THAT DESIGN, DRAFTED IT TO THE SIZE I'D LIKE, AND THEN I ADDED THE BORDER THAT WOULD BE MY OWN ORIGINAL DESIGN.
IT IS SO CLEAN-LOOKING.
IT JUST SPARKLES.
IT TRULY DOES.
AND THE APPLIQUE-- TELL US HOW YOU DO THAT.
AND, OH, ALSO, ALONG WITH IT, NOT ONLY THE APPLIQUE, BUT WHAT IS THIS SPECIAL THIMBLE THAT YOU HAVE?
I MEAN, WHO HAS THEIR OWN NAME ON THEIR THIMBLE?
THIS IS THE PRODUCT OF YEARS OF FRUSTRATION, NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND A THIMBLE THAT I CONSIDERED A GOOD ONE, THAT HAD DEEP DIMPLES.
SO I INVESTED SOME TUITION MONEY, AND I TOOK A CLASS AT OUR LOCAL ART INSTITUTE.
AND I WAS THERE WITH ALL THE JEWELRY MAKERS, THE NECKLACE MAKERS, THE BRACELET MAKERS, THE EARRING MAKERS, AND I ANNOUNCED THAT I WOULD NOT LEARN HOW TO DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS.
I WANTED TO MAKE THIMBLES.
AND YOU MM-HMM.L THESE?
MY GOODNESS.
CHRISTMAS PRESENTS TAKEN CARE OF FOR ALL OF YOUR FAMILY.
NOT ON YOUR LIFE.

YOU DON'T GIVE THEM AWAY?

AND YOU'VE MENTIONED THAT YOU THINK ONE OF THE SECRETS IS TO HAVE THAT REALLY FIRM DIMPLE AT THE END OF EACH ONE.
THE DEEPER THE DIMPLE, THE BETTER ABLE YOU ARE TO GRAB THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE AND TO MANIPULATE IT IN THE POSITIONS NEEDED TO ROCK IT, THOUGH.
RIGHT.
THAT'S WONDERFUL.
WHAT SIZE DO YOU WEAR?
SIZE MEANS NOTHING IN TERMS OF NUMBERS.
EACH MANUFACTURER HAS THEIR OWN NUMBERING SYSTEM, WHICH I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE OUT.
I LIKE THIS REAL PLAIN ONE.
I THINK THAT ONE'S PRETTY.
I HAD TAKEN SOME PLASTIC THIMBLES THAT I FELT HAD GOOD INDENTATIONS AND DIMPLES, AND THEN I THOUGHT, "WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU BUZZED OFF ALL THE DIMPLES ON THE OUTSIDE?"
WELL, THEY'RE MARVELOUS.
WELL, NOW SHARE WITH US SOME OF THE WAYS YOU GET--I REALLY-- YOUR APPLIQUE STITCH.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING SO FINE.
WHAT IS-- I WANT YOUR SECRETS.
WELL, I CALL IT INVISIBLE APPLIQUE, BUT IT'S REALLY NOTHING MORE THAN A LADDER STITCH WITH THE NEEDLE GOING IN AND OUT OF EACH FABRIC SEPARATELY, FIRST IN THE PIECE TO BE APPLIQUED, THEN ON THE BACKGROUND, THEN AGAIN INTO-- DOCORRECT.P.
RIGHT ON THE SEWING LINE WITH THE NEEDLE PARALLEL TO THE FOLDED EDGE OF THE FABRIC.
AND THEN, AFTER SEVERAL STITCHES ARE TAKEN-- WHOOPS.
THERE'S A KNOT.
AFTER SEVERAL STITCHES ARE TAKEN, YOU PULL THE THREAD AND IT DISAPPEARS.
I SOMETIMES STROKE IT WITH MY THUMB TO RELAX ANY EXCESS TENSION.
AMI KEPT SEEING THIS FANCY CASTLE ON POSTERS, IN MAGAZINES, AND IN BOOKS.
FINALLY, HER HUSBAND'S SOCIAL STUDIES TEXTBOOK CAME OUT, AND THERE IT WAS ON THE COVER, SO THE QUILT JUST HAD TO BE MADE.
YOU'VE PROBABLY BEEN WONDERING WHERE IS MY QUILT CHALLENGE.
UNFINISHED, THAT'S WHERE.
I'M GOING TO MACHINE-QUILT IT, BUT BEFORE I DO THAT, I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU THE TECHNIQUE OF WORKING ON THE BRICK WALK.
THIS PATTERN HAS ALWAYS INTRIGUED ME, AND I JUST COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO PUT IT TOGETHER.
WHILE WE WERE IN ALASKA, PAM MITFORD HAS SHARED THAT TECHNIQUE WITH US.
I HAVE PLACED ROW HOUSES ON EITHER END OF THE BRICK WALKS, OF COURSE.
IF YOU'LL FOLLOW ALONG, I THINK YOU'LL UNDERSTAND HOW THE BRICKS FIT TOGETHER-- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, AND YOU SIMPLY MAKE PANELS.
STARTING AT ONE END, YOU SEW ONE TO TWO, AND THE SECRET IS THAT YOU DO NOT SEW UP TO THE END.
LEAVE AT LEAST A HALF AN INCH FREE OF STITCHING.
THEN 3 TO THAT SEGMENT, ALL THE WAY DOWN AND STOP.
4, ALL THE WAY DOWN AND STOP, AND 5, ALL THE WAY DOWN AND STOP.
CONTINUE ON THESE BANDS.
THE IDEA IS THAT THEY ARE THEN GOING TO FIT TOGETHER TO FORM THE BRICK WALK.
HERE IT IS IN CLOTH, AND YOU GET THE SAME IDEA.
HERE'S WHERE WE STARTED SEWING, AND YOU CAN SEE IT'S UNSTITCHED AT EACH END.
NOW YOU'RE GOING TO LINE THESE UP.
AND NOW LET'S SEE WHICH WAY THESE GO TOGETHER.
THERE WE GO, SO THAT THE LAVENDER IS BALANCED AND IT'S EVEN ALL THE WAY ACROSS BUT YOU START SEWING AT THE OPPOSITE END.
LET'S STITCH ONE TOGETHER, AND I THINK YOU'LL GET A BETTER IDEA.
WHAT I DO IS TO PLACE THE TWO RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER JUST LIKE THIS, PIN THEM IN PLACE, AND START OUR STITCHING.
AND ONCE I STITCH ALL THE WAY UP TO THE END... THAT ALLOWS ME TO THEN COME-- I'LL MOVE THIS ASIDE, AND YOU CAN SEE I'VE STITCHED ALL THE WAY UP TO THIS END RIGHT HERE.
THAT ALLOWS ME TO STITCH ALL THE WAY DOWN HERE.
AND THEN COME AND STITCH ALL THE WAY HERE AND ALL THE WAY HERE, SO IT'S JUST ONE SIDE TO THE NEXT, ONE SIDE TO THE NEXT.
I LEFT THIS SIDE OPEN BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE THAT 90-DEGREE ROOFTOP OF THE HOUSE IS GONNA BE SEWN RIGHT IN PLACE.

AND SHE CHALLENGED US TO MAKE OUR OWN SUNBONNET SUE QUILT.
AND THIS IS SUNBONNET SUE OR SYMPOSIUM SUES.
IT'S A LOOK AT US--SPEAKERS, CONVENTIONEES-- AT THE DIFFERENT SYMPOSIUMS AND ALL THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT HAPPEN AND WHAT WE DO.
ALL THE BLOCKS WERE DONE BY DIFFERENT GIRLS, AND A LOT OF THEM ARE PROFESSIONAL QUILTERS THAT TRAVEL AND LECTURE THEMSELVES.
WELL, THERE'S JUST A LITTLE BIT OF EACH OF US IN THESE.
NOW, I SEE THEM GOING DOWN THE FIRE ESCAPE.

AT QUITE A FEW CONVENTIONS, THE BELLS HAVE GONE OFF.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE QUILT, YOU'LL SEE THEY'VE BROUGHT THEIR MOST PRECIOUS POSSESSIONS WITH THEM.
ONE'S WRAPPED IN A QUILT.
THIS ONE LADY OVER HERE IS CARRYING HER FABRICS, AND SHE'S DROPPING THEM AS SHE GOES, BUT SHE'S NOT REALLY LEAVING A GOOD TRAIL BECAUSE THE ONE BEHIND HER IS PICKING THEM UP AS FAST AS SHE CAN.
I SEE.
AND THEN WE HAVE THEM AT THE RESTAURANT, OR IS THIS IN THEIR ROOM?
THIS IS THE OH, I SEE.NACK.
THEY'RE OVER THE SKYLINE OF THIS METROPOLITAN AREA.

AND THEN THERE ARE JOGGERS.
I DIDN'T REALIZE-- OH, AT ALL THESE CONVENTIONS WE HAVE SUNBONNET SUES, ALL OF US, PHYSICALLY FIT.
BECAUSE STYLE STOPS AT THE KNEES DOWN.
NO, BUT WE HAVE SOME RUNNERS.
THEY COME OUT AND THEY RUN EVERY MORNING.
THEY ARE SERIOUS RUNNERS.
THEY'RE HANGING THE QUYES.SHOW-- EVERYBODY HANGING THE SHOW HAS ON THEIR WHITE GLOVES, EXCEPT MRS.
EARLY BIRD IN THE TOP CORNER.
SHE'S GOT HER HANDS TOUCHING THE QUILT RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SIGN, OF COURSE, THAT SAYS "DO NOT TOUCH THE QUILTS."
NOW, YOU HAVE DONE SOME FREEZER PAPER PATCHWORK WITH THIS.

SO YOU'VE CUT AWAY A LOT OF THE BACK, AND YOUR NEXT STEP IS TO GET THIS QUILTED.

SO I DECIDED THEY REALLY NEEDED SOMETHING TO WEAR THEIR PINS ON, SO I DESIGNED THIS.
IT'S JUST A VARIATION OF A LOG CABIN VEST.

OUR TIP OF THE DAY HAS TO DO WITH PENCIL MARKS ON QUILTING.
IF YOU HAVE TO USE A PENCIL FOR MARKING YOUR STENCIL LINES, DO USE A HARD LEAD BECAUSE IT LEAVES A VERY FINE LINE.
I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST TO PUT THOSE PENCIL LINES ON A SAMPLE PIECE OF MUSLIN THAT YOU'RE GOING TO USE.
PLAY WITH THAT AND SEE IF YOU CAN REMOVE THOSE PENCIL LINES SO THAT IT WILL NOT DETRACT FROM YOUR BEAUTIFUL QUILTING STITCHES.
WE HAVE COME UP WITH 4 NEW WAYS TO REMOVE PENCIL LINES, AND YOU MIGHT TRY ANY ONE OF THEM.
THE FIRST ONE IS BABY SHAMPOO.
THE SECOND ONE IS GLYCERIN, THE KIND THAT YOU JUST BUY AT THE DRUGSTORE.
RUB THAT IN WITH A LITTLE FINE TOOTHBRUSH, AND THEN, OF COURSE, LAUNDER IT WITH SOME IVORY SOAP.
ANOTHER, THIRD WAY MIGHT BE RUBBING ALCOHOL AND THEN SOME IVORY SOAP.
AND THE LAST ONE IS A MAGIC RUB ERASER.
DO TRY THOSE SO THAT YOUR PENCIL MARKS DON'T INTERFERE WITH THE BEAUTIFUL QUILTING LINES.
