It must have been his or his grandfather's.
I really don't know that a lot about it.
APPRAISER: Was your grandfather in the navy?
GUEST: No my uh grandfather was uh on the railroad and I don't know about the navy.
APPRAISER: It's made by one of the finest watch companies in the world, Patek Philippe.
This is a ship's chronometer.
This particular watch, which is signed "US Navy" on the reverse, was issued to the government starting in 1915.
In 1912, this watch won a third place in the Geneva Observatory.
Patek along with all the other fine Swiss watch companies spend enormous amounts of money and resources testing their watches in frigid cold temperatures, extreme heat, high humidity, in vibrations for being on boats and in planes, and you know riding in cars.
And this won a variety of awards and Patek as a company won a tremendous amount of awards, they were the premiere watch brand in the world.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: And after that is when the United States government purchased this exact model.
The army had them and the navy had them during that time period.
The movement is a chronometer grade movement, and it's called a "caliber 21," and the movement is ultra-high grade.
Gold capped ruby jewels.
It's in magnificent condition.
The watch is made of of silver, it's 900 fine.
It's a fairly collectible watch because generally big is better and people love the large size.
The dial happens to be in very very good condition.
The watch is in excellent condition, considering it was a US Navy issue watch.

GUEST: I've never really thought of it, it's been in the drawer you know and that was it APPRAISER: Well GUEST: Until I came here.
APPRAISER: Okay.
Well you'll probably be in for a pleasant surprise.
On the retail level in 2023, a watch of this condition and quality would bring somewhere in the $25,000 to $30,000 price range.
GUEST: Oh my gosh.
