Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: It's passed down in my family from Chester, Pennsylvania.
This is one of several pieces that come from my family.
And, uh, we think it's, uh... we don't see any obvious marks on it.
We think it was made right there on the farm, and that's about all we know.
APPRAISER: Well, I can tell you, it was made by a great American cabinetmaker.
This is a classic Pennsylvania piece with two ball turnings, with a nice baluster in the middle.
The surface is incredible.
This is the original surface that we like to see on American furniture.
GUEST: Right.
APPRAISER: And it is absolutely perfection-- balance, restraint.
And I especially like the rounded knees and the way they join the pillar.
GUEST: Right.
APPRAISER: This is craftsmanship where someone cared about a simple form, and in my mind that makes this candlestand worth so much more than your average stand.
It's probably worth about $8,000 to $12,000.
GUEST: My.
Can I lean on it for just a moment?
(chuckling) APPRAISER: Absolutely.
