APPRAISER: It is a double-armed lamp, which is nice, that makes it more desirable to collectors.
They used a, a device here where the wick was around the c, circular force here.
By turning this up, they would use this Argand gas to basically increase the flow of the fuel, so that it really enhanced the lamp.
This was a technique developed in the, uh, 1780s.
It required a high-quality fuel that would burn much more efficiently and brightly.
Whale oil was the fuel of choice.
It became commonplace in all homes.
You've got a beautiful one done in bronze, with lovely, original etched globes.
This dates to about 1840.
It's a real treat to see.
Easily, at auction, this piece would go from $800 to $1,000.
Collectors love this because it hasn't been cut down.
