She adored jewelry and her husband gave her a lot of jewelry.
And after she died, tragically, my grandmother inherited them.
All my family was born in St. Petersburg, Russia.
And during the revolution, those that could, escaped and went from Russia to Finland, from Finland to Riga where I was born.
My grandmother and my aunt escaped with the jewelry to Finland and they escaped by lying flat on the bottom of a boat and they put rags and stuff on top and the jewelry came with them.
And anytime any of my family moved, the jewelry went with them.
Most of my family was killed by the Bolsheviks communists.
They were nobility and the communists Bolsheviks don't like nobility.
My two uncles were shot.
One uncle had his wife with him and she was months six months pregnant.
They shot her.
And then my grandfather, who was a part of czar's cabinet and he was just elected to become treasurer of Russia.
So that he had to be killed.
My father was an American spy and we came to this country hoping that we could bring my grandmothers who brought me up.
And one died from hunger and one was sent to Siberia and never heard from again.
So I'm so grateful to be in America oh.
APPRAISER: I know that we selected these two pieces from a larger collection that you had of Russian jewelry, most pieces had the Russian marks on them.
These pieces are both unmarked but very clearly from the family because it's noble jewelry so clearly from a family that had wealth.
This one has a detachable element that turns it into a brooch.
There's a small screw in the back and would screw into a duodenum.
So this is actually a piece of tiara from your family.
GUEST: Well that makes it even dearer to me.
I don't care if it was made out of tin, I would still love it.
APPRAISER: The ring is equally valuable.
It's comprised of platinum and two line cushion cut diamonds and a ruby in the center.
The ruby is strongly fluorescent and that's an indication of Burmese origin.
I would have it sent to one of the fine gem labs and have it certified for country of origin.
Have you had this jewelry appraised?

APPRAISER: A fair retail price, for the brooch, is between $15,000 and $20,000.
GUEST: And I brought it here in my pocketbook oh.
Yeah, okay.
APPRAISER: And the ring, while it's scratched and worn and much more diminutive, because of the stones in it, specifically that central red stone, is worth as well $15,000 to $20,000.
I'm so happy you brought the collection.
GUEST: I wish they could talk because they would have a very dramatic story to tell.
