It’s common for mining companies in South Africa to sweep in with workers from outside a community, destroy the environment, “take the minerals and leave the people angry,” says environmental activist Given Zulu. Artisanal miners in the province of Mpumalanga enter the dangerous abandoned sites and mine for themselves in the absence of other job opportunities.
