Ruff’s first “ARF” assignment reveals how cutting holes in a tower may be a solid idea.
Kids call in to Ruff’s new service, called “Ask Ruff First” or “ARF,” looking for a way to keep their mini-golf tower from tipping over in the wind. Ruff recalls the story of his great-great-great-grand-uncle Ruffois and his assistant Blossóm, who discovered that cutting holes in a tower can prevent it from falling. Will the same strategy work for the kids’ mini-golf tower?

♪ Hi!
Our question today is from Talia and Caleb, who ask: Hi, Ruff!
And welcome to Ruff Putts!
RUFF: Thanks for having me.
TALIA: Today, we made a golf course made out of materials we found from the house.
CALEB: Our problem is the tower that we made out of boxes.
Whenever there's a gust of wind, it blows over.
RUFF: Yup, that is a gust, all right.
I only go out when there's a light breeze.
TALIA: The course is great, but we just want to finish our round of golf.
Do you have any ideas how to keep our tower from blowing over?
Well, Talia and Caleb, your problem reminds me of my great-great-grand-uncle... ...the famous French canine architect Ruffois!
Back in 1889, he was hired to build a tower for the World's Fair in Paris.
Ahh, a lightweight tower made of cardboard walls, and those tubes you find in rolls of paper towels.
It is revolutionary!
RUFF: But right after it was constructed... (wind howling) ...a breeze sent the whole tower tumbling away.
(crash) That is not, how you say, awesome.
Chetois!
Blossóm!
We must redesign the tower tout de suite!
RUFF: Ruffois thought there was something wrong with the cardboard.
So they tried building a tower with aluminum foil walls.
It... blew away.
RUFFOIS: Ah, le wind.
It blows my towers.
(crying) (grumbling) Aha!
RUFF: And one more with walls made from Ruffois's collection of pajamas and long underwear.
And... that also blew away.
(Ruffois groaning) That was all my pajamas!
Now I must sleep in my pants.
And I have no tower.
RUFF: But Ruffois's assistant, Blossóm, had an idea.
Ah... what is this, you say?
RUFF: Blossóm figured out that when the wind blew, it pushed on the walls of Ruffois's towers.
That's why they kept falling over.
And she came up with a daring idea to fix the problem, cut holes in the towers!
That way, there would be less wall for the wind to push against.
Now I know where Blossom gets her brains from.
(chuckling) Blossóm built a couple of small models to test her idea.
The wind blew just as hard against each tower, but the model with holes didn't have as much wall for the wind to push against.
So the wind couldn't push it over!
Blossóm!
Chetois!
We must do a test at full scale.
Bring me the fan gigantique.
RUFF: So they built a tower just like their first one, only with holes in the walls, and who'd have guessed?
Putting holes in it actually made it more stable in the wind.
And now we build this in Paris!
RUFF: But on arriving back in Paris, apparently some guy named Eiffel stole Blossóm's idea and made his own tower.
(Ruffois sobbing) And the only thing Ruffois is known for today is the Pajama-and-Long-Underwear Doghouse.
Not a hit, though I like it.
That could work for ours too.
Let's go try it out!
RUFF: Ah, now they're cutting holes in the tower.
♪ ♪ All right, now let's test the tower with holes against the tower without holes.
TALIA: It's slightly moving.
The one with no holes is slightly moving, and so is the one with holes.
They're both kind of moving at the same rate.
We're gonna move it a little forward.
RUFF: Oh, they both seem to be teetering.
(Talia gasps) The one without holes fell down!
It's actually working.
The wind is passing through the holes instead of pushing against the wall, so it stays up!
RUFF: Hail science!
TALIA: Hey, Ruff!
We took your advice and cut holes in the tower so the wind can pass through.
CALEB: The wind can't push on the tower as hard, and the tower's not blowing over anymore.
Yeah!
RUFF: Nice putt!
Thanks!
Bye, Ruff!
No problem, guys!
Any time.
Happy golfing!
Because on ARF!, there's always something new to learn.
Like... some mice can grow moustaches.
Lookin' good there, Chet.
