I can't wait to meet Un cle Zucchini on the Moon!
- Oh, me neither, Jet.
It's our long-awaited rematch to see who can "win" another Earth "race" thingy.
- Now, what does "race" mean again?
Is it like a potato?
- [giggles] No, Jet, a race is trying to be the fastest, the first to finish something!
- Oh, "win," "race," what fascinating Earth words.
We Bortronians don't really have words for those things.
- You want your saucer to win a race with Uncle Zucchini's saucer though, right, Celery?
- Oh, you bet your shoes I do.
[laughing] Ever since Sunspot and I "souped up" the saucer, I've wanted to take her out and see what she can do.
Engine's running smoother than ever since we added those Dual Custom Carbifonators, Sunspot.
They'll show Zucchini and his Bortronian Engine Boosters what real speed is!
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
- Whoa, okay, it's a space race.
We're gonna be racing around the Solar System at unimaginable speeds.
Breathe, Sean.
- Uh-huh, breathe, Sean, breathe.
- I can't wait to hear what Uncle Zucchini is bringing.
He says it's a "surprise."
- Oh, yes, that means something he can't tell us about.
- I love surprises!
What could it be?
- Uh, a new kind of booster on his boosters?
- Ooh, I can't wait to find out.
[beeping] [thud] - Ah, here we are--the Moon!
[spaceship whirring] Ooh, Zucchini!
- Hey, hiya, Sis!
How ya been?
kids: Hi, Uncle Zucchini!
♪ ♪ - Whoo-hoo!
- Yay!
- Hi, Uncle Zucchini!
- Oh!
both: [chattering] [drumming] - Hey, Celery, "race" you to the other side of that crater!
- Oh-ho, you're on!
- Whoa!
- Hey!
- Oh, you got quite a spring in your step.
Feeling lucky today, Sis?
- Oh-ho-ho-ho, I was born lucky, Zucchini.
So what's your big "surprise"?
Did you add a new Bortronian Booster?
- Nope, the surprise is Eggplant wants to join us in this Earthie potato-race-thingy too!
- Auntie Eggplant?
- [laughs] Hello, Celery!
Surprise!
[spaceship powers down] [laughter] - Yeah, surprise, whoo-hoo!
Hi, Earthies Sean and Sydney!
Hey, hey, Jet, Jet, Jet!
Long see no time, cuz!
Mom brought me along as her navigator.
That means I get to tell her which way to go.
- Cool, I'm Celery's navigator.
- Ah, well, luck good and all, but we're gonna win 'cause I pretty much know my way around this entire Solar System.
Ahh!
Oof!
[exclaiming] Whoop, except for this small crater.
♪ ♪ Bortronian Engine Boosters.
[gasps] Ooh, are these Dual Custom Carbifonators, Celery?
- Oh, yes.
[clang] - Well, I won't say what's under the hood in my saucer, but let's just say this potato-race-thingy should be fun!
- Ooh, all right, let's race.
Which route should we try this time?
- Ooh, good question, Sis.
We've already done that whole planet-to-planet thing.
What could we do that's new?
- [laughs] I've heard about this "Asteroid Belt" between Mars and Jupiter.
What if we race around it?
- Ooh, you mean one whole trip around the Sun?
- A belt?
Of asteroids?
What's an asteroid?
And what are they made of?
- Asteroids are big and little chunks of rock, Zerk-- broken up pieces of planets and comets.
- They come in crazy shapes, like Kleopatra, which is shaped like a dog bone.
- And Itokawa is shaped like an otter swimming on its back.
- And Dioretsa orbits in the opposite direction of all the others.
- Kleopatra, Itokawa, circles the Sun backwards.
All righty then, now I'm an expert on asteroids.
- Hey, what if we made the race a kind of hunt to find each of these unusual asteroids along the way?
- Cool, you mean a scavenger hunt?
- I love it!
- And I love the sound of a "sca-ven-ger hunt," whatever that is.
- We make a list of things to find.
First person to find 'em all wins.
- Great, we'll race around the Belt, passing by the coolest asteroids.
- And take pictures of each of 'em.
- So we can show 'em to each other at the end of the race!
- But--But where do we start?
- Why not from the largest body in the Asteroid Belt?
- Ooh, I know what the largest asteroid body is--Ceres.
It'll be easy to find.
- Right, we'll start at Ceres.
- And then go all the way around the Asteroid Belt and finish at Ceres.
- Perfect!
To Ceres!
Whoa!
[clanging] all: Let the potato-race-thingy begin!
all: Ready, Jet, Go!
[engines revving] [dramatic music] ♪ ♪ [engines revving] ♪ ♪ - [chatters] - There it is, Ceres.
- Setting a course now!
Hit it, Celery!
- Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
♪ ♪ - Hmm, Celery and Zucchini are both going that way.
- I, uh, well, Mom, since I now know pretty much everything about the Asteroid Belt, I say we go this way.
[whirring] Ah, whoops, wrong way.
[whirring] ♪ ♪ - Uh, that map is upside-down, Moonbeam.
- [chattering] - Fine.
all: Ceres, whoo-hoo!
[whirring] - Wow, what a huge asteroid.
- And so bright and shiny.
What is it made out of, ice?
- Diamonds?
- Ice cream?
- Uh, yuck.
- Nope, it's so bright and shiny because it has pockets of salt--whoa.
Go od guess though, Sydney.
Many other asteroids are made of ice and--watch out!
[alarm blaring] [whirring] Oh, hah, that was close.
- All right, everybody, from here, it's a billion-mile trip ar ound the Belt, and the last one back to Ceres is a rotten potato.
all: Excelsior!
- ♪ We all met up at Ceres where the Belt is wide ♪ ♪ Three cool saucers flying side by side ♪ - ♪ I'm solid fram-inducted and I'm planning to win ♪ ♪ 'Cause my engine boosters are Bortronian!
♪ all: ♪ Racing through space down a belt ♪ ♪ Made out of asteroids ♪ ♪ ♪ - ♪ Dual Carbifonators drinkin' down my fuel ♪ ♪ They make a lot of noise, and they sound real cool ♪ - ♪ Well, boosters and Carbifonators may sound good ♪ ♪ But I've got something special sittin' under my hood ♪ all: ♪ Billion-mile race down a Belt ♪ ♪ Made out of asteroids ♪ ♪ Well, here we go now ♪ ♪ Space racing, ooh, bop, bop ♪ ♪ Flying saucer chasing, oo h, bop, bop ♪ ♪ Space racing in a belt ma de of out asteroids ♪ - Whoo!
- ♪ A hundred thousand as teroids may call this home ♪ ♪ But there's millions, ma ybe billions ♪ ♪ Which are still unknown ♪ - ♪ Made of ice and clay and metals ♪ ♪ And, for what it's worth, all of these materials ♪ ♪ Are found on Earth!
♪ all: ♪ Well, here we go now-- Space racing, ooh, bop, bop ♪ ♪ Flying saucer chasing, ooh, bop, bop ♪ - Yikes, hitting one is truly so mething to avoid!
♪ ♪ - ♪ Kleopatra's like a dog bone ♪ ♪ Coming out of the black ♪ - ♪ Itokawa's like an otter swimming flat on his back ♪ - ♪ Then we pass Dioretsa, that orbits the Sun ♪ ♪ In the opposite direction from everyone ♪ - ♪ Here we go now ♪ all: ♪ Space racing, ooh, bop, bop ♪ ♪ Flying saucer chasing, ooh, bop, bop ♪ ♪ Space racing in a belt made out of asteroids ♪ [brakes screeching] [whirring] - There's only one unusual asteroid left in the scavenger hunt.
It's a big one called Hygiea.
- [laughs] Yes!
This race is inside the bag!
[whirring] - Is that Hygiea approaching, Zerk?
- Uh, um, I can't tell.
I mean, they all look like a bunch of brown rocks to me.
- Well, let's assume it is.
They're all racing to it as fast as they can.
I think it's time to bring out our little secret and win this!
- What, you mean...?
- That's right, Zerk.
Hah, the Anti-Gravity Fluxinator!
- [laughs] Whoo, I love this device.
This is gonna be so fun.
[beep] [upbeat music slows down] ♪ ♪ - Ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
[in slowmo] Ooh...hoo...hoo.
[spaceships powering down] ♪ ♪ [whirring] ♪ ♪ all: [in slowmo] What's...going...on?
[beeping] - [cackles] Jet, Jet, Jet, oh, yo u're probably wondering why we suddenly pulled ahead.
- Wha...?
- My mom just fired up th e Anti-Gravity Fluxinator!
Basically, it sucks energy fr om you guys and adds it to our saucer's engines.
- Ooh...no... Anti...Gravi.... - What's...a...flux...?
all: Oof!
- ...Xinator?
- Bortronian technology.
I can't even explain it.
Basically, we slow down, and they go really fast.
♪ ♪ kids: Ceres!
- And we win!
- Whoo-hoo!
- Whoo-hoo!
- There's Kleopatra.
And Itokawa.
And Dioretsa.
- All made out of ice and clay and metals, just like Earth.
- What cool asteroids!
And what a race!
Well done, and well won, Zerk.
- Ooh, I--thanks, Jet.
I mean, it's actually really, really fun to "win," as the Earthies say, and we, uh, we did have a bit of help with our Anti-Gravity Fluxinator.
kids: True... - But I love winning!
I won!
- You know, it's funny.
It feels good to win, but it feels even better just having fun racing around the Solar System with your friends and your family.
- I agree, Jet.
Best potato yet.
Let's all get together and race again soon.
- I won!
- [laughs] - I won!
♪ ♪ [light music] ♪ ♪ - Hiya, Sydney.
- Whoa, hey, Jet.
Hey, Sean.
What are you building?
- This is our most brilliant invention yet.
- Oh, yeah.
- Really?
What is it?
- Glad you asked!
Ahem, take it away, Inventor Sean.
- Thank you, Builder Jet.
Okay, problem: You're busy playing, and you really want a snack.
What do you do?
- Uh, go get a snack?
- Exactly, but let's say your snack is way over there on that plate, and you're over here.
Problem again, right?
- Seriously, is that actually a problem?
- Did somebody say "problem"?
Problem, meet solution.
- Your snack, delivered to you the easy and fun way!
♪ ♪ [clacking] Yeah!
[thud] [ping] ♪ ♪ [tweeting] [ping] ♪ ♪ - Yes, yes, we're getting close to that snack the fun way!
[thud] ♪ ♪ - It's going, it's going... - It's-- - [gulp] [chattering] - It's gone.
- You know, I think that could be a problem.
- Ugh, I'll say.
Glazed doughnuts are my favorite.
- [chuckles] - Come on, Jet, it was going really well till that last part.
We just have to keep trying new designs and figure out how to get this machine to work for us.
- Hey, Jet, what about that other machine you built to do things for you?
You know, Jet 2?
Right over there?
- Yeah, he's okay, I guess.
- Why isn't he playing with you guys?
- Well, for one thing, we are not just "playing."
We are "solving problems."
- Right!
And what would a robot know about solving problems?
- I think robots are sort of known for helping us do work and solve problems.
- She's got you there, Jet.
- That is why humans built robots in the first place.
- Exactly--you have this great Jet 2 robot here, and he's just standing around, doing nothing.
- Yeah, the thing about Jet 2 is he looks cool, but he doesn't actually do that much useful stuff.
And he can hardly say anything.
- What does he say, again?
[beep] - Hello.
- Hello, Jet 2.
How are you?
- Hello.
Ye s. Play.
[clang] - Oh, yeah, now I remember.
- Play, yes.
He llo.
- Uh, do you want to play?
- Hello.
Yes, play.
- Okay, let's play.
- Hello, yes, play!

- Okay, I see what you mean.
- Hello.
- He seems like he doesn't have lots to say.
- Yes, play.
- And also, he seems kind of, uh, lonely.
- He does?
Why do you think he's lonely?
- He's just standing there all day by himself with no one to talk to.
[whirring] ♪ ♪ Hmm, maybe we can help him.
- Hello, yes, play!
- How?
- What if we make another robot to be his friend?
So he could have someone to "hello, yes, play" with.
- Why would he need that?
- Hello, yes, play.
Hello, play.
He llo.
- Yep, I see why this may be a good idea now.
- Play.
- I'm on it.
Jet 2, I'm gonna make you a robot friend.
- All right, Sydney, so here's a diagram or picture of robots that we are working on now at the DSA, and some that we plan to build in the future.
- Whoa, Mom, that one almost looks like a spider.
What does it do?
- That one is designed to explore the surface of other planets or explore our oceans.
- Ooh, I love it.
Could I make one like this?
- I'm sure you could do that, or anything you put your mind to, one day, but, for now, you might want to start a little simpler.
- Like...?
- Think of something you can draw and build on your own.
That's how I started out when I was your age.
Take a look.
- Whoa, Mom, this is really cool!
So you wanted to design robots even when you were my age?
- Exactly!
I've always been interested in robots and in making them help do work and solve problems.
- Me too!
Can we build one that can do my chores?
- [laughs] That might be a little complicated.
Even when you build a robot out of different parts, you still have to design the most complicated part-- the controller, or the brain.
- How do we build the brain?
Oh, we need to program it, right?
Like a computer.
- Exactly!
Programming is a set of instructions for the robot's computer brain to follow that tells it what to do.
- [gasps] That's great, because I want my robot to be a friend to Jet's robot, so all we need to do is tell it to act like a friend, right?
- Mm, it's not that simple, Syd.
Acting like a friend is really hard for a robot, or any computer.
- Can't we just program in "Please do everything that a real friend would do?"
- [chuckles] Computers and robots don't know how to be a friend because they don't understand what humans think.
- [sighs] - Suppose you see a friend who looks like this.
What would you do?
- Hmm, I'd say, "You look sad.
What's wrong?"
- Right, but a robot can't tell that someone's face looks sad.
- Huh, sounds like it would take a lot of programming to get a robot to do that.
- It would, but don't worry.
I'll help you.
- Thanks, Mom!
Can't wait to get started.
Okay, team, here are my plans to make a robot friend for Jet 2.
- That's pretty.
[honk] Can we use this rubber ducky?
- [laughs] We'll keep that in mind.
In the meantime, do either of you have any ideas for improving the design?
- I do!
What if we put a bow on the side of its head?
We could use tape!
My mom lets me use tape all by myself.
- [chatters] - Good idea, Mindy.
Now we need parts.
A robot's brain is called a controller.
We can use a little computer for that--my mom has one.
But we need some other parts, too.
- Like arms and legs and stuff?
- Right, things that can help the robot move around and do things.
- Exactly what I said-- arms and legs.
- Yes, so let's get some things here that could be arms and legs.
Let's build!
- [chatters] ♪ ♪ [chattering] ♪ ♪ - [laughs] ♪ ♪ [whirring] ♪ ♪ [rattling] - [chatters] ♪ ♪ [tweeting] ♪ ♪ [ping] [sizzling] - [laughs] [drum roll] Presenting Sydney 2!
- [gasps] She's perfect!
- I know, right?
Let's go introduce her to Jet 2.
- Okay, Jet 2.
Say hi to your new robot friend.
- Hello.
Yes, play.
♪ ♪ - Introduce yourself, Sydney 2.
- Hello.
[crackling] Hello.
[crackling] Hello, play.
- Maybe they can't figure out how to be friends.
- [chattering] ♪ ♪ - Yeah!
- [whines] [chatters] - Aww.
- It's easy to be a friend.
You just act like a friend.
- Yeah, when one friend talks, the other listens and then answers.
- It seems we need to program the robots to do that.
- You're right.
Since Jet 2 always says "Hello, yes, play," maybe my mom can help us program Sydney 2 to answer him.
Okay, if Jet 2 says "hello," what should Sydney 2 answer?
- Maybe "Hello.
How are you?"
- Great idea, Mindy.
I bet you know other good ways to be a friend.
- [chatters] - Right, they could play together.
- Jet 2 does say "play" a lot.
- Great, I think I've got the picture.
[thudding] - Mindy, you're back!
- Actually, this is my front.
- [chuckles] Good one, Mindy.
- So what do you say?
Let's introduce the robots again.
- Hello.
- Hi.
Want to play?
- [laughs] Ye s, play!
all: It's working!
- That's so silly.
- That one was my idea.
- You know, they almost do seem like friends.
- Yes.
♪ ♪ Play.
- That's so silly.
- I call this robot play date a success.
- It's one big step in robot-to-robot friendships.
- Want to play?
- Yes, play!
- Well, I think we finally programmed these robots right and figured out the best way to get them together.
- Great job, engineer Sydney.
- And the best part is our snack machine is also finally up and running!
[clang] Gah!
[chuckles] [boinging] ♪ ♪ - Whoa!
♪ ♪ [clacking] ♪ ♪ [thud] [ping] ♪ ♪ [thud] [shatters] ♪ ♪ [thud] ♪ ♪ [door bell chimes] ♪ ♪ [thudding] [hissing] [thud] ♪ ♪ - That's so silly.
