The crumbling mansion was designed by Thomas Jefferson for James Barbour, a governor of Virginia. Henry Browne shares the story of why it was abandoned on Christmas Day in 1884 and the stories of other ruins from his book Vanishing History, Ruins in Virginia with photographs by Kevin MacNutt.
