Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipjust ahead on this week addition of being well sherry version from the university of illinois extension will be stopping by to talk to us about bringing fitness you are you work your heart and your mom flew through exercise so why not that great st cnn to learn more about how to keep your mind active and healthy for years to come that's next on the welfare state right here seri thanks for coming and being well you know on this show we often talk about physical fitness working on our hearts in our muscles today we're talking about brain fitness um... tell us a little bit what about this idea for brain fitness or bring training cum from how long has it been around well it's it's relatively new on the research uh... has really came out in the last ten to fifteen years on uh... challenging your brain and and brain fitness the other day went to uh... mcdougal and people brain fitness in and down about forty million hits ancel it's something that is is really trendy as well and um... the researchers have found two major things and and one is that time inventor more that's you you know becoming gauged and to train your brain you know the better your cognitive skills aren't you know and and and that will prevent hopefully future memory problems do you think act i had just had this how do you think because for such as cell phones the citing everything is right there that we've kind of and taking electric all phone numbers for example from memory yes is the old yesen dash i think we're all n guilty of that incident and that we have to make a and efforts to uh... go back on in the old school adn men because yeah i think our brains get lazy whenever we don't challenge it and try to remember things them institutes to he need to put on the cell so tell us a little bit what what exactly is bringing fitness or bring training brill training if it's a it's a variety of things and there in many different ways to basically put the car train your brain uh... it's not just uh... somebody doing their daily crossword puzzle are either san diego puzzle and saying i'm staying with it because of that uh... it's it's doing things that our challenge into you because i think it's too easy man this it's like if you're lifting weights and those five pound weights allison become extremely easy for you you're not challenging yourself anymore you have to add a new captive till variety and somethings so um... some different tivities that are counted basically as brain fitness can be campaign thing from mining in language okay uh... to uh... learning different ham card games or board games uh... naked the traveling because just you know if you're traveling abroad in your lining things as you go and can he can be even um... things their hands on like woodworking or learning in in dance or anything that you know you you really have to think it real and and learn today and i would imagine the well were working our brains are obviously more active right do you find your have you found that you know when people retire you know you're not engaged in problem maybe some of the same things he did when you were working pick your brain can maybe does get a little lazy if you don't keep up with some of that stuff and and to say the same about those who work i think a lot of them think that their that they're staying intellectually challenged because they're working but you can't get into that rat as well if it's a year in data entry person in your doing you know computer all day long the same thing again it's doing the same exact thing in your not it's it's not a challenging more so uh... you have to find that morality so when you're working out here you're running or whatever it is easy ways to measure your fitness you know three months ago you could run two miles now you can rent fifteen or whatever so we know we can fit and measure our fitness how can you measure brain fitness possible upenn i'm not sure if you know i'm not sure like just us as lay people could probably amin eat you could probably sense like if you remember aim more mang and it's an internal sense but uh... researchers definitely have uh... ways of gauging that they've there's a lot of again research being done brain fitness and how i relate star overall health seven lots of studies out there where there uh... intensely training seniors mom with the different uh... testing of different parts of the brain and then retesting them later and finding great great strides 'em so um... if we're starting this and we'll talk a little bit about who should start and when that some of the long-term benefits that you can that people can hope for if they decent brain fitness in bringing training well you know the long-term benefits hard at the time hopefully you'll be able to recall a lot better um... recognize things a lot better oun his short long term memory will improve and their did there's many things that you hope to see and and and the final online as you as you are a gene you helped to people to stave off you know some cognitive decline that come along with with aging which we can totally prevent right but we can and stalin to talk about the aging brain the wheel but what good do you know what that's what happens with their brains as we get older does it sort of like turned much sir what's going on in fact ed well and there's a con there's a couple minutes and that researchers i have read about basically in one math was that as you get older durai q props that you're intelligent traps and they found that that was absolutely notthereyet one because what had happened really was in a makes sense is that they were administering tests of seniors the same as they were administering tests to younger people and the seniors hadn't actually taken pen and paper tests for years and years and years and years and they were out of practice aka and the young ones knew how to do that and so when the seniors were trained in how to do the testing they found that there was there is no different that often they were doing while so that meant was defiant as well as which can't learn anything new and you get older unique and detailed itinerary nats absolutely not true they just might take them a little bit longer but spam hasn't various things in in a normal brain on has ages you know we have neurons in our brains and uh... and connectors that's uh... those neurons they've they will bhai and the connections that they make you'll lose those as well as their some chemicals in our brains that will decrease make make us a little slower and when you when you challenge urself and you exercise your brain so to speak basic ily you are building up more more more more neurons and connectors on the way i explain to my audiences wind in my classes is it it's like you're building roadways i'm all your life if you start as young as you possibly can your whole life you can continue to make like little extra roadways in intersections in your brain so that as you do a g_m_ natural aging occurs or you have a disease and spinner answer dying in the then the roadways close you have others their routes yeah so you basically patted your brain you've built that little at extra rafts assessments so that that's contact so it went to recommend people start as soon has soviet uh... they say that earlier the batter um... and infecting ellam as far as in terms of alzheimer's and to mention uh... it's it's not something even if you would start really young you can't and waited right if thats the way you're meant you're going to be but they say that really really began and you continue to technologically challenged yourself and work yourself that will press that off and farther and farther and give you a better chance ok continental so-called if you know we're gonna get into actually send actual brain activity is imminent that call so start now right exam commerce how many times a day how long you know as a fitness isohunt how many days a week do i need to do this to really see some benefit now the research that i did looked at i haven't seen any bike prescription and anything just mainly what i've seen isn't spent daily nope that's been the the key word there is this daily i and i don't know how long does as long as you're doing something daily and would like to seniors that's important because a lot of them if you think about some of the seniors at her home isolated by themselves uh... you know if they just have something that they do at least once a day to help work their brains i mean i don't i think about it like when you go on vacation from work for a week or two that first day back to work it just if u types anything for a week or two minutes it's amazing of quickly forget how did you know do certain things and even in laying on a beach all day earth or and now exactly what you're saying because i uh... i was thinking about that it's like you feel like you're kind of enough on when you get back to make you have to reintegrate incipient then you keep you know it's like really about men charged in the back up again and that brings up a good polling is uh... you know other things that will help with your brain health is not just challenging your brain but its social engagement and interaction so you know if you've taken a break and your away from everybody he does take awhile they can get back in a very old bomb and then other things like good diet in good exercise and decrease stress and running a good sleep yes also huts so what types of there's all different exploded there are different functions of our brightness long-term short term at talk about what those different functions are and how uh... watson whatev those as improved by doing some brain fitness training well here your brain from that's a big amazing bang you know it's a limitless and you've got you know your long-term memory and short term memory long-term memory is unlimited lists caches you know if you can ever say your brains fall 'cause that's not true it you know i when people have trouble remembering recalling something it's not that it's not in there it just takes a while to get it back out right you know if you recall short term memory of course is you know is is that shorter version of that's in there critical thinking which is basically when you're pouncing your check but you're thinking three math problem is here you know having to stop problems those types of things and then their is your spatial reasoning also which is there was a lot harder explained it's like your ability to safely jigsaw puzzles together do rubik's cube or you know size and dimension things like back enhanced important to train all of those thanks x you know that's where we come into that who crossword puzzles so i'm going to be ok you know that's just me one thing that you're you're working on you have to try and exercise all of those functions are people who love to swatch jeopardy everyday just to kind of but thats recall in memory of that that's not getting probably yeah you know the spatial thing see why you got your crotch until something it okay i have just read actually we're talking about brain how much information every story disguised may addition of smithsonian magazine and there's a thing about brains and it says in there that the brain can store one hundred terror bites a pin for patient endeavor to computer stores either ten twenty that's prints amazing instead well you know you always hear that i don't know what the percentage bill we only use like a percentage of our brains and an arrest isn't is intact so there's plenty of storage space in if you guys just a matter of getting it into your okay so let's get to know we will contest at the separate civil code activities what what sort of things do we need to do to build a short term long term and rare cognitive what her son we talked about things likes to do cohen crossword puzzles but there's more to it than that yes yes opening of a condition all right contact with me now we're gonna see how well they do itself thank you that notice i have all the answers ok and acted like it that would be an t_v_ here well for one thing i do want an i will mention briefly a lot of people come the the seminars on a given their like itis wanna learn uh... i'd just addis money get over this everyday forgetfulness sort of thing which we all have it as a matter of what age uart and some little simple tricks you know we call one thing we cops hunting uh... which is you're so scary number lives you remember it because it's been chunks of numbers okay or your telephone number chunks of numbers if you have to stay in contact set yourself athletic pet so um... so it's it's the same for you know if you have a long ad number that you need to memorize and trumpet to supply key with those others and it's easier to remember same as your groceries your purse she lets do you know most of us write it down then forget it at home you know so things like if you've written it out and you think well if you can strand get like by about bio at the grocery store that you're using everything in that i'll let me know and then the next i'll or you can send it in all the dairy products together all the meat products together making at peak it instead of being randomly everywhere a kind of helps the celtic choking chanakya yes solids just paying attention i have to mention explaining why is there anything eats well you know if you look at how many times you met somebody and immediately after you meet them you're like what was then and i cannot remember larry disease another name him everyday real estate he who uh... yeah sure yet and and sometimes it's not that we forgot insists that we never really paid attention and i personally straight down so you know paying attention to that such and some stuff that i teach uh... our seniors and it's kind of funny because it's reminiscing for them to his email having fun with language m trying to remember things using fun language like three times and he said right at e left you a c andrea okay that's just something that's in there that we've done and i and i have you had fun with language in your amber and some other things like spring forward paul back fallback you know we remember that way uh... in fourteen ninety-two columbus sailed the ocean both no there you go so those types of things you know i'm having fun with language we can kinda remember intact so short term memory there's some ways that you can uh... uh... practice that's what i think that prop with a look here at work i'll be walking down the hall ready to do something and then i go what telling so i need help with the certification it well let me tell you this is absent from a brand new lesson that just came out i haven't even dennis about hanging out okay uh... i'm going to recite four sentences random censorship and i want to be paying attention to the last word of the exact okay is when i'm done i want you to brain activity and i cannot write them down never-ending out by ten down ok septic listen to the east michelle has a softball game tonight at river road park time put down to the bakery to buy himself a cinnamon roll agnes scott mary the quickstep at the aragon bokram the instructor at summer camp canceled swim lessons due to rain hoof role rain anne mcdermott deadline barroom okay what item was bought at the bakery the cinnamon roll here yet buried yet yeah i a m i when i did this to me i for some reason instead of our m sense when park have no idea what it so that most of the uh... this is for your short term memory as okay as that is just a quiz f_b_i_ under short term memory eric and another thing that we can do is i can give you a picture okay and down thesis butt and how much is study that picture very fleeing alright it's an old pic citizen all picture acknowledge i exist century but you know people and injuring sisson yet sometime and rested men overalls click their farmingdale vocal health but think about in the field of helicopter on an apartment hunting field yet impact etc alright salmon ticket away and eating it too quick every month if you remember how many of them had umbrellas make it do you recall how many had pacts there was five ok too didn't have them on their heads so cac chi may have a hard and pay do you recall and how many had and then over also three value guests ticket actually there was one two three five ok by no needed to watch this very often so he can ticket but see this is kind of uh... short term right now campaign against that you know paying attention biz all they stand just that that's a select size ok star at so long-term memory and buy a new means is a slight in a medical alert an evaluation any contact with carey extant is i think that's my job is not intended okay migrating pic so long-term memory a lot of times will take like uh... trivia type questions for people um... all c_n_n_ ninety related to the generation they weren't you know product and a half and one thing that i didn't mean the spray ask anyway can you name the last six presidents of the united states incl including accounts obama clinton push that's five luke perry me now obama bears clinton bush reagan carter exported needed berry berry did so can you tell me who is on the one dollar bill george washington v ship maneuvering without five abraham lincoln tom welling cars they should know that uh... at about the twenty dollar bill was named alexander hamilton first in the town he's ten whistle twenty john do you know nascar came a day now jackson and rejects that yes i need to get help from off-camera not it's not outfit you can see them but there are people up here to help me immediate answer theories in this little thing you know people came in and they have to have retrieved from far and that's the usually we are back on the house out cannot and we'll see how did you are in your proper sp and it how about in the early bird catches the worm men and watched pot never boils weekend here in a better later ii's katrina allen early to bed early to rise you know lien bud yes he's a man healthy wealthy and wise if he didn't get any yes yeah yes so and a lot of the senior soviet will get those those are old-fashioned things that i guess if you ask him at thirteen year olds they they might not hurt at those things right and i'm not certain arranged about it the critical thinking finnegan is the you know your you're having to pulling out sand and problem solve apparently and so i'm getting a new series of letters k and you need to tell me what the next letter would be in the series you got beat c d he c and myself because they all ryan because they arrived very good larry can i get a event right now the c_i_a_ developing i didn't get anything and that's how my hanging outside t_v_ you know the host if if delight a lot about when can u ad member card too two eleven and it one as the answer map this men were subjected to a loved one until now something tibetan mathematically to two eleven in q line now i fell upon this but i don't know if that's ok and i have the answers how an outfit an it's when you had two hours to eleven o'clock oh because one o'clock the and all still trying to sell obviously happy every teasers that but you know any kind of brain teasers like that test your critical data there my least favorite band i'm probably the thing i did i get paid up you know challenges night's event down by a three ac now spatial reasoning is inability to look at objects huh and make judgments about their size in their placement uh... dimension is typical woman that we we cannot judge just via email at this and we can't wedge you know dislike i'm sort of a measure besar wants at twice skated person knows about that size down mastery obviously i've bolick over himself picture here okay and i think you'll see that that this is an optical illusion they say that we can use the site's homie what you are seen that picture accountancy that that's the well it looks as your people you can see a chalice error culp tennis center dissidents it's kind of three it's just catholic i don't know what else is there and there are and there is a guy that is strumming has the car idaho and the i see it i_d_c_ handing out okay then there's a man that's holding something on his hand in the woman's face these he's he's a guy and it's got a hat andy's dot storms up okay you have to see that now and then in the middle term and here there's like a door archway health care and there's like a figure animals or inconsistent and cm watchmen my parents now while that's interesting so-called you know now sometimes people never never see this you have to act it's just you know depends but it is kinda expand your mind that shipping can not open minded you know to that wasting so those are some things that we can do well so let me talk about you know dick wilson recommendations for just a general good pockets of health some other things i mean the brain fitness at sccm that's great what are some other things we should be doing begins its it's almost like it's kinda berlet down whatever's good for your heart is also good for your brain ok so um... the good her healthy diets uh... the rest the distressing uh... that there's more and more uh... research being done on physical fitness and how distributes tab cognitive healthy and on they're saying that it's more of the aerobic the physical fitness you know the ones that get your cart pumping and because what it's doing as it's getting the oxygen in the blood to the brain and that's beneficial it's it's getting his uh... endorphins those hormones going as well on and really if even if you get out just at least three times a week for thirty minutes each time that has been shown to be beneficial i mean anymore than that is even better but uh... even that little is is good for a person so on you know we just had to a guest speaker at our last week a team meeting and its his name's doctor art kramer and he is a professor of psychology and nero science at the campaign and big and all of this research team and his biggest recommendations for brain health were too simulator something like sewing the diet their diet connection size and the social interaction they'd be year-round people and interact with people you know don't isolate yourself that was his biggest payslips grocery this is a lot of fun thank you for coming out and bring this great information and it's something kisi that we can do anytime in the daily shit all-star right now thank you so much for being on the well we thank you
