During the war, Lu lived through poverty and hardships but he is very than, thankful for what he learned from it. He got involved in student movements in the 1940's, concerned for the people in China. Lu still senses some discrimination against the Chinese even today. That is why, he says, you have to be two or three times better than other American's in order to participate in society.
