- [Nature Cat] Tally ho, an igloo!
An igloo is a shelter made of snow and ice, but we're going to make one out of clay.
How cool is that, am I right?
Onward and igloo-ward!
Here's what you'll need.
White clay, a toilet paper roll, a sturdy cardboard piece, at least 12 inches by 12 inches, safety scissors, butter or play knife, be careful!
A small bowl, a crayon or pencil, craft paint, glue, and a spray bottle with water.
Water, why does it always have to be water?
We'll tell you.
Step one, find a piece of cardboard, make sure it's nice and sturdy, because it's going to be the base of your igloo.
Paint it any color you like.
We are making ours white for snow.
Pretty clever, huh?
Step two, make your door.
Using your safety scissors, cut the paper roll in half.
Then, across the width of the roll, cut it in half again, making a small arched doorway tunnel for the entrance.
Step three, decorate your door.
Paint the entrance and then let it dry.
Step four, trace the base.
I'm a poet, didn't know it.
Once your cardboard is dry, place your bowl upside down on your cardboard where you want your igloo to go.
Trace a circle using your crayon or pencil.
Step five, place the entrance to the igloo at the edge of the circle facing out.
The snow bricks will hold it in place.
You can also glue it down.
Step six, time to make the snow bricks from your clay.
Take a section of your clay, make a rectangle about one inch long and 1/2 inch thick and wide.
Make sure to even out the edges so that the clay is smooth.
If your clay becomes dry, spray it with water.
Step seven, laying bricks.
As you make each brick, place them around the edge of your circle.
Step eight, it's time to stack, stack, and stack some more.
That's a lotta stacking.
Spray the circle of clay a few times to keep it sticky, then add the next layer of bricks.
To create the dome shape, place each brick slightly more toward the middle than the last layer.
Remember to add bricks over your entrance.
Repeat until you've reached the top.
Leave space at the top for air to enter and escape, just like a real igloo.
Step nine, spray to seal.
Now, spray your igloo with water to seal it.
Smooth the edges, and use extra clay to seal up any cracks around the sides.
Step 10, now let's decorate.
Make a scene for your igloo.
Add your favorite arctic animals such as polar bears, but remember, there are no penguins in the arctic.
Step 11, take pictures and share with your friends.
I can't wait to see them!
