Where to Watch Carl the Collector
Carl the Collector is available to stream on pbs.org and the PBS app.
- Hello, stickers.
Hello, rubber balls.
Hello, stamps issued before 1973.
(smooth jazz music) - [Zacharia] "Carl the Collector" is an animated show about a raccoon on the spectrum.
- Uh-huh.
- He lives in Fuzzy Town with a bunch of his fuzzy friends.
- Thanks for giving us the rope from your rope collection, buddy.
- I'm just happy to be part of the team.
- The show is based on my artwork style that I use for my books, kind of janky.
- I will show you one of my most precious collections.
- Carl absolutely adores collecting things, - Things that you would expect kids to collect, like balls, to things that you wouldn't even think that someone would wanna collect.
- Wanna play with my wing nut collection?
He's also autistic, which I am too.
- One way that Carl's autism expresses itself (Carl screams) in the show is that he has challenges with change.
- The scratch and sniff sticker has lost its smell.
- And then we also have Lotta the Fox.
She represents girls on the spectrum who often go undiagnosed.
- It means so much to me.
- The social world in particular is so much more unpredictable for autistic people.
- [Lisa] But Carl's friend group is really supportive and great.
- [Stephen] They accept each other for who they are, and I think that's important to the show.
- Would you please help me?
- Of course.
- Be right there.
(upbeat music) - Animating Carl has been amazing.
The animation team, the things that they come up with blows me away.
- We're always trying to stay true to Zach's vision and his design.
It's a really collaborative process, and there's autistic people involved in every step of production.
- This is actually my first time being in a show.
Your tree fort is an architectural masterpiece, and mine, adequate at best.
(gentle music) - "Carl the Collector" is just a really kind-hearted show.
- [Zacharia] I hope that people see themselves in it.
They see people that they know in it.
- It's okay, Carl.
Mama would say take some belly breaths.
- The shows on PBS KIDS are the gold standard.
I am just so happy and proud that Carl is gonna be amongst them.
- PBS KIDS cares about authenticity, and this whole show is about the authentic experience of kids.
- To the collections!
