ANNOUNCER: MAJOR SUPPORT FOR "CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS REMIX" WAS PROVIDED BY: THANK YOU.
[SOFT PIANO MUSIC] "CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS REMIX" WAS CREATED IN HONOR OF BARBARA BUSHMAN, A DRIVING FORCE IN HER COMMUNITY.
BARBARA WAS BOTH A LONGTIME SUPPORTER AND VOLUNTEER OF PUBLIC TELEVISION AND THE CINCINNATI CHAMBER ORCHESTRA.
THANK YOU, BARBARA.
[ORCHESTRAL MUSIC] My name is Eckhart Preu, and I'm the conductor for the Carnival of the Animals.
It was originally composed by Camille Saint-Saens.
The composer's name is French, and the last name is Saint-Saens.
And the first name is Camille.
So it's Camille Saint-Saens.
Camille Saint-Saens.
The Carnival of the Animals is really a work that consists originally of 14 movements.
Each movement portrays an animal.
And Saint-Saens really tries musically to portray certain characteristics of the animals.
And he composed this originally just on the side, just for fun.
He did not experience the public performance of the carnival because he explicitly said, "I do not want this piece to be performed during my lifetime.
It might overshadow my other works.
I really want it only after, after I'm dead."
And so this happened two months after, after his passing.
And it was a huge success.
And people thought it was the funniest thing they've ever heard.
And it's one of the very few educational works that have survived centuries.
I mean, this piece is 150 years old.
And so, we thought it would be a good idea to kind of bring it into the 21st century, to update it.
So we created this whole new thing, which we call the Carnival of the Animals Remix.
I think music is one of the first things that children immediately connect to.
If it's rhythm, if it's singing, and it's actually one of the first things that children do too, is kind of hum and sing and imitate and speak in rhythm.
So music is something incredibly inherently human.
And I think it's also the one language that is present all over the world and can be understood in all the world.
As orchestras, we are always interested in works that connect to children because we want to introduce classical music to children, we want to introduce instruments and also musical styles and performers.
And the Carnival of the Animals is uniquely suited to do that because of the connection of music and animals.
I think what Saint-Saens tried was to portray each animal in a certain characteristic way with the musical forms and structures that he knew.
But for instance, when he describes elephants, it doesn't really sound like the elephants come from Thailand, or so they all sound very European or the kangaroos sound very European too.
So it's very Eurocentric music.
And so as we were thinking about the remix, it's like, how can we introduce a music from the area where these animals actually come from?
So when we talk about lions and giraffes, we really wanted to do African sounding music.
And when we talk about pandas, we want to do Chinese sounding music, a very typical sound of that area so that the children can connect the animal with a visual, then also with the audio sound, Musically more authentic than what Saint-Saens did.
- Our education team thought it was really important that just like the concert, the educational materials are going to be both fun and interactive.
So that's how we design the whole thing.
We really designed this specifically to go into the classroom, but we have so many things in there that are hands on and fun that we know that families are going to use it, too.
For example, there is an arts and crafts section for each of the movements.
And so you might be able to, let's say, make a rainforest right at home, or you might be able to make some snakes and lizards or animal puppets.
You can make lion snack dip.
So we have nine different concert movements and nine different parent discovery guides in the learning materials that they can find to watch and do things at home with their family.
Even though it was designed for ages three to maybe eight years old, this is something for all ages and for families with all age kids to do together.
And so with PBS Learning Media, every single kid that wants to go to this concert can go.
You do not need a ticket.
It's very much levels the playing field for anyone who wants to get into the arts.
And the other thing is there's not really, even though PBS Learning Media has hundreds of thousands of resources, there's really nothing quite like this Carnival of the Animals remix on PBS Learning Media.
So we're really excited to bring it to the communities.
- I think that the Carnival of the Animals is a journey around the world.
You visit different continents and the music that is played there and the animals.
We have interesting instruments like the Erhu, a traditional Chinese instruments.
We have an indigenous Native American flute, which of course has a phenomenal sound, very unique instruments, very unique soundscapes.
And we had a blast learning it.
And I'm sure everybody has a blast listening to it.
And now here is the Carnival of the Animals Remix.
Please enjoy.
