We're not very good at fluttering yet.
I know a butterfly named Bernadette.
Now she could teach you how to flutter.
She's the flutteriest flutterer you ever did see.
You know a real butterfly?
I most certainly do.
She lives in Milky Weed Meadow.
Bernadette is a Monarch butterfly you know!
A Mon...arch butterfly?
Monarch's a word that means king or queen.
And the prettiest butterfly you've ever seen!
Wow!
Can Bernadette teach us how to flutter?
Shall we go and ask her?
Yes!

We've landed on a milkweed leaf!
Hmm, it doesn't look milky... Or weedy...
It's not milky or weedy but it's certainly a great spot for Monarch butterflies.
They looooove milkweed.
Hello Cat, is that you?
Whoa!
Bernadette my Monarch Butterfly friend!
Meet my friends, Nick and Sally.
Hello!
Hi!
Your wings are so pretty!
Oh thank you!
And let me tell you, they're not just pretty they're pretty useful too.
When I open them up the bright colour tells birds that I don't taste good to eat.
Whoa, is that bright!
Smile!
(giggles) Hey, you're wings are bright on one side... And duller on the other.
Do they help you hide?
Yes, they do.
Like I said, they're not just pretty they're pretty useful too.
Can you teach us how to flutter like you?
Oh, I'd love to.
But fluttering lessons take time and I'm on my way to prickly pines.
Is that far from here?
[laughs] Yes.
Prickly pines is far, far away.
More than a car can drive in a day.
Wow!
Monarch butterflies are the only butterflies who ever fly so far.
Oh, it takes me a long time to get there.
I've already been flying for days.
And days!
Why are you going to prickly pines?
It's warmer there, and I just hate the cold.
Brrrrrr.
Can we go too, Cat?
Then we can watch how Bernadette uses her wings!
Why yes!
It will be the best fluttering lesson ever... To the Thingamajigger!

It's stopped raining!
And the sun's coming out.

Now I can dry out my hat.
(laughs) How do you dry out, Bernadette?
I flutter my wings and let the sun and the wind dry them out.
I wish we could do that too.
But the water doesn't drop off us.
When you're wet through and through and need drying out.

♪ ♪ ♪ It's one big trip for a small butterfly.
♪ ♪ But Bernadette is the queen of the sky!

It looks to me like it keeps them warm - like when you cuddle your Moms.

[yawns] But there's something we need to do first.... Time for your fluttering lesson.
[yawns] Oh excuse me - I'm a little tired after all that flying!
Now Spread your wings nice and wide... You don't need to give us a lesson, Bernadette.

♪ In fall, Monarch Butterflies start on a flight, To faraway forests - warm, dry and bright.
It's a long way to travel for creatures so tiny But they love to spend winter somewhere sunshiny!

Where did you learn how to fly like that?
I'm not flying - I'm fluttering!
Bernadette the Monarch Butterfly showed us!

It's easy - you just wave your arms like this.

We learned from the flutteriest flutterer you'll ever see.
