Hi, I'm Genesis.
And today I'm here with Arts Professor, Jae Won Lee.
Jae Won, can you tell me where we are and what you do?
- [Jae Won] We're in the Kresge Art Center at Michigan State University and I'm a ceramic artist.
- How is STEM incorporated into your job?
- We need to know geology and chemistry to develop glaze recipes and we need to know raw materials from the earth yields what effect.
Technology is also part of ceramics education, because we are working on the potters wheel with the centrifugal force, the turning point.
With the electricity invented in history, people could use that electric potters wheel, so we can get to this point of speedy production.
Also, we have various types of kilns.
- What exactly does a kiln do?
- Kiln is to fire clay objects.
Chemical compound is shifted.
Without the heating process, we cannot call these objects ceramics.
- What can ceramic and pottery items be used for?
And what have they been used for throughout history?
- Pottery has existed over hundred thousands of years.
Ancient people all around the world made pottery out of their functional need.
From the prehistoric storage jars, to contemporary usage, pottery and ceramics have contributed immensely to the human endeavors.
- What is your advice to kids who are interested in a career like yours?
- Be willing to get dirty and take risks.
And have fun and enjoy what you do.
In creative art, failure is not a failure.
Failure is just another start point.
And art in the STEM is really important.
