- [Narrator] Join us in celebrating innovators in education with this Golden Apple Moment.

- Art is so important because it's the way students make sense of the world.

They can just be themselves and just openly create without having any limits.

I mean, that's a way I feel that we can gain that understanding of people who are different than us as well and people who are similar.

So one of the projects that we do is the dia de muertos project.

It's a celebration of those that have passed away.

Every single grade level gets a different project and we all create an ofrenda or like an altar.

This is our third year doing it now.

And every year it's different because we add more to it.

We just create a whole community celebration at the end.

I think it's important for students to be able to see their cultural and even their gender identity is reflected.

I really hope that my students can walk out of my classroom feeling empowered.
