It is time for today's language explorers.
We're gonna find out how to say some words today in American Sign Language.
Hi, Miss Stephanie.
- Hi, Wimee.
Hi, friends.
- What are you gonna teach us today?
- Well, the word clap in American Sign Language is this.
- Yeah.
Ooh.
- So you take one on hand and face it up and your other hand faces it down in the same direction and claps.
That's the word clap.
- [Wimee] Okay.
- Now, if though you want to be clapping for someone because they did something great, in the deaf community, you don't clap like this.
- Okay.
- You clap like this.
- [Wimee] Oh, nice.
- This is applause in American Sign Language.
Do you have any ideas as to why that might be?
- Why it looks like that instead of like lots of forward clap?
- Why this is not clapping.
- This is more visual and more celebratory?
- It is more visual.
- That's why?
Oh!
- Well, 'cause down here, most people clap down at their waist level, or down here, it's hard to see.
But also if you are in the deaf community, you can't hear the clapping very well.
So it needs to be visual like this.
And now when we are clapping for someone, would we clap with our face like this?
- I don't think so because that doesn't seem very supportive.
- Exactly.
So in American Sign Language, you need to be really expressive with your face.
So you wanna put on a big happy face like this when you're clapping, when you're getting feeling applaused.
- Yay, I love it.
- Cailynn, I was wondering if you wanted to join me to do this.

It's time for Power Up with Miss Jessica.
♪ Power Up with Miss Jessica ♪ - Hi, Wimee.
Today, we're going to power up up our hearts and our minds by learning three reasons why clapping is awesome.
Now there are lots of reasons why clapping is awesome, but I'm just gonna focus on three.
Reason number one.
Clapping gives us energy.
We have receptors in our hands that connect to our brain and they tell our brain to give the rest of our body energy.
Ah, it's so cool how every part of our body is connected.
Let's clap for three seconds together and activate that energy.
Ready?
Go.
(Jessica clapping) Two, three.
Yes!
(laughs) We just activated energy with our hands.
Reason number two why clapping is awesome is that clapping improves our circulation.
This just means that all the blood that's in our body constantly needs to be moving, and when you clap, it moves all that blood and keeps you alive.
That's kind of important.
So let's clap together for three seconds while thinking about improving our circulation.
Ready?
Clap.

It's called "Clap."
And this is by Uncle Ian Aurora, and Uncle Ian is kind of not featured in the book, but he wrote the story for nieces and nephews.
And it's published by Flowerpot Press out of Tennessee.
And in this book, we're gonna clap once, we're gonna clap twice, and now you're gonna clap three times, because clapping is just what this book is for.
There's rhyming, there's counting, there's even some stopping, and it's so much fun because we are just clapping with friends and having a terrific time together.
And at the end, there's a little bit of a surprise as to why we've been doing all of this clapping in this book.
But we learn that clapping is what happens when you bring your hands together in the middle and you go poo to make that fun sound.
There's loud clapping and quiet clapping and clapping with stomping and who doesn't wanna participate in that?
So check out this book from your local library, and I know you're gonna have a good time with it just like I have.
