Who's ready to win a state championship?
[ Cheers and Applause ] >>> We are ready here in the class 2a field, Ellie, this is going to be a fun one here between pan ram ma and Dike-New Hartford.
Keys to the game for the panthers?
>> Panthers, keys are to follow the seniors, they have a very strong senior class with Tyme, Jaidyn Sellers, and it's also rebounding, they've got to win the rebounding battle if they want to win this game.
For Dike-New Hartford keys are, again, experience.
They have been in this position time and time again.
That's going to help them guide them to this fourth state championship win and also play their inside-outside game, that's been a key for them all tournament long as well as their season, look to see them put the ball inside but also kick out for a three.
>> Dike-New Hartford, in this state championship game here in class 2A for the fourth consecutive year.
They won their first three in 2021, defeated makoketa valley, 22, central line, 2023 a rematch, took down central line and the captain of all those all tournament teams, Payton Petersen gets it started Earl as you see the five on the floor for the Wolverines.
>> So good down there.
You saw her catch that pass but then also get the turnover.
Great hands, great athleticism and just instincts.
>> Maryn Bixby has been a huge improvement, a big piece of this basketball team for Dike-New Hartford, number 15 top of the corner gets it inside and Petersen adds two more, Payton Petersen, twin sister to Jadyn Petersen, playing college volleyball at Louisville next season, and has three state titles in volleyball and is looking for a fourth in basketball, stepping on the out of bounds line, will give it back to Dike-New Hartford.
Panorama will bring some pressure defense through this game and the new piece for Dike-New Hartford not on the floor last year, a freshman point guard Payton foster, number 13 for Dike-New Hartford, shoots it right here, too strong, rebound tipped ARN around and grabbed by Kent.
>> When we talked to coach Dall after yesterday's game he said Payton foster was an experiment in the summer at the team camp.
>> Putback by waddle for two.
>> He put her in as point guard, and it's working out for them pretty well.
>> Just having a little trouble with the break in some pressure, here's Payton Petersen, gets blocked underneath, that's a jump ball and panorama gets it back on the possession arrow.
You see Tyme Boettcher, the senior, the daughter of head coach Kylee Boettcher who is in year number 5, and won her 100th career game this season for the panthers.
>> See if the panthers can get something going offensively here and what's so hard ant Dike-New Hartford's defense, they play a 2-3 zone and Maryn Bixby up top and coach Dall likes to use her length up there.
>> 6'1", a wingspan that doesn't stop.
Here's Waddle from the outside, rebound for Payton Petersen.
Ahead to Bixby.
Izzy Norton in the game for Dike-New Hartford, replacing Madde Buskohl.
Norton, a 5'8" junior, eight points in the quarterfinal round win and a pass for Jadyn Petersen, too tall from foster and panorama gets it back.
>> What's that Dike-New Hartford is going to do, though, they're going to look inside, that pass just a little too high right there.
>> And Dike-New Hartford will bring that pressure, you talk about the physicality, panorama Hartford, the length is an issue as well but they play physical on the defensive end of the floor too.
>> They did, and I mentioned this in the pre-game show, but a major key for panorama is matching the physicality, and I like the matchup between Payton Petersen and Jaidyn Sellers down low.
>> Sellers, 5'10" senior, playing division I college softball, playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes this next year, steal on the entry pass, and panorama looking to run.
Three from the right wing, Waddle still can't connect from the outside.
>> That's who you want shooting if you're panorama.
>> Tyme Boettcher with a near steal right at half court and you see panorama right now, Ellie, matching that intensity, with defensive pressure of the defending state champs Dike-New Hartford.
>> Coach Boettcher, we've had plenty of time to catch up with her, talk to her about her team, and she has three R's, rebounding, run, and recognize.
>> They are ready to run right now, Tyme Boettcher, leading the fast break, Sellers calling for it inside, she gets it, the flip to Boettcher.
Can't get the roll.
And a loose ball scrum will have another possession arrow and Dike-New Hartford will have the ball after this tie-up.
>> I think Tyme Boettcher wants that possession back, she knows that was an opportunity right there, and she just couldn't lay it in for the panthers.
>> Tyme Boettcher, the leading scorer, averages just under 20 points per game coming into the state tournament, and teams know that.
She scored eight in the quarterfinals, 12 in the semifinals.
And she finds Sellers underneath, and we're knotted up at 4.
And this is a kick, it's going to be panorama basketball, four straight steals from this panorama defense.
>> Panthers matching the intensity right here, look at that nice pass in transition.
Jaidyn Sellers with the great finish.
>> Three from the corner for Boettcher, too strong, and Jadyn Petersen with the rebound, Jadyn Petersen has had quite the tournament here in her senior year, nine points, 17 rebounds in the quarterfinal round game, basket underneath for first points of the championship game.
Ellie, yesterday in the semifinals she came down and landed really awkwardly on her left ankle, left the game, came back in.
I did not think she was coming back in with that game, finishes with seven points, 16 rebounds, she's as tough as they are right here, this number 3.
>> Tough as nails and we talk about all these Dike-New Hartford players, they're competitors and not missing this game for anything.
And, yeah, she went out of the game, but you knew dang right she was going to do whatever it took to get herself back in.
>> Talked to head coach Bruce Dall right before the game and he said looked a little stiff at shootaround earlier this morning, here is Jaidyn Sellers, picking up right where she left off.
Had a fantastic tournament as well, 18 points, nine rebounds in the quarterfinals, nine points, ten rebounds yesterday in the semis.
As the foul goes on Mia Waddle, the 5'5" senior, that is her first.
>> It can't just be one player every game stepping up.
Throughout the tournament you're going to hear various names throughout the both of these rosters, semifinals, quarterfinal games.
>> Jadyn Petersen with two more.
Sometimes it's the unlikely hero that comes away with the big game.
>> And it could be anybody's night.
>> Here is a steal by Kaitlin Kent.
5'4" senior.
For panorama -- >> From way downtown.
>> Boettcher had 60 made three-pointers on the season coming into the state tournament and it's got to feel good to hit that one in the state championship game.
>> There isn't a spot on this court that she doesn't feel uncomfortable at.
She's going to shoot it wherever.
She can shoot at all three levels.
>> Jadyn Petersen likes to drive baseline, now feeds it inside to Payton Petersen, goes up, blocked by Sellers, and a foul.
It looks like it will be on Sellers.
And that will be her first personal foul.
Here's a look at that deep three from Boettcher.
>> Almost a logo shot right there.
>> Yeah.
Just off the state of Iowa on this brand new court here in Wells Fargo arena.
Substitution for Dike-New Hartford Payton foster into the game, norton checks out, Payton Petersen at the free throw line, three-time all tournament team captain as part of Dike-New Hartford's three consecutive state championships.
>> You said three-time captain for basketball.
But hey, guess what?
She can also play volleyball.
And she's a three-time state tournament captain for volleyball as well.
So just an all-around, incredible athlete.
Will go down as one of the best in Iowa high school basketball and volleyball history.
>> Throws it away.
Morgan Crees with the steal for panorama.
Crees an excellent tournament as well.
Boettcher left open again, off the right side of the rim.
Crees had a 19.9 rebound quarterfinal round game against Grundy center as Miranda Tyler, senior, checks into the game for the Wolverines.
Approaching the 1:00 mark here in quarter number one.
Inside, it's ripped away from Tyler.
>> Panthers with a tough defense, see what they can do here on the offensive end, they're keeping it close here, in this first quarter.
>> Two point shot off the mark from Sellers, Dike-New Hartford will get it back.
First 8:00 quarter, Ellie, state championship game, sometimes you're getting some nerves out, even though you've been down here and played two games already this week, that state championship game, I mean, we saw the introductions, right, it's got a different vibe.
>> It does have a different vibe, and sometimes it just takes the first quarter to settle in, take a breath.
>> Here's Bixby for three.
Sellers with the rebound, Boettcher with the shot clock turned off.
At the end of the first quarter.
The three from Waddle.
No, long rebound out to Crees.
Now, Boettcher in the lane, off the glass, and good, with five seconds to go.
And that is how quarter number one comes to a close, 11-11, and we send it up top to Paul Yeager with a look at how these teams got here.
>> How about that?
We're back at zero, tied up at 11.
Thank you very much, brad Welles, let's see how these two teams ended up here.
Pre-game show, 30 minutes before the first game.
A look at Dike Newhart ford, sioxu central, early on Wolverines, foster to Payton Petersen, Petersen gets the nice rebound and putback, and then she does it from three, Payton Petersen in the first quarter tonight has six points and three rebounds, seems about normal for panorama.
They played westwood, with coach Johnson, who was on the all tournament team when he was a player, trying to get his daughters to the squad, but for panorama it was a daughter combination Tyme Boettcher.
And there's another -- here's Jaidyn Sellers with the strong grab and putback up, panorama won a nail biter 39-36, both of these teams, brad, played very close in their semifinal games.
They all kind of feel the energy of that, right?
>> Absolutely they do, and they've been in some of those close games recently as well, as this is crunch time now, right Ellie?
You have that experience, even if it was back in December, or late November, right?
Being in those tight games, prepares you for moments in games just like this.
>> It does.
And a lot of it goes back to strength of schedule.
Whether it's non-conference games, your conference games, you want to play the best teams to prepare for these moments and both teams can respectively say that they have played top competition all year.
>> Well, for Dike-New Hartford in their four years, two losses this season.
They're 25-2 coming in.
They lost in November to solin.
And lost in January to north Polk.
Two losses this year, Ellie, in four years combined, they are 102-105.
>> Pretty incredible.
All they do is win, brad, that's all that they know.
Win.
>> And we were talking to them yesterday after the semifinal win, it was Maryn Bixby, the junior volleyball state championship we didn't win, that still haunts us, and so they are motivated to not let it happen in basketball.
Panorama has other ideas.
Here's a steal by Bixby.
Bixby, the 6'1" senior, she will play volleyball at UNI, she is on the board, and she has had a huge tournament, 25 points in the quarterfinals, 11 points yesterday in the semifinal win, Boettcher shot too strong, rebound knocked out to Bixby.
>> And, again, an all-around great athlete.
We talk so much about these multi-sport athletes and just the habits that they have.
Day in, and day out, what they bring to the table, and Maryn Bixby is a competitor, but consistency, she's so consistent with what she does.
>> A year ago, coach Dall said she could touch the rim.
So I asked her this year, I'm like, are you dunking yet?
She's like, I can dunk a tennis ball.
That is impressive.
>> I was lucky if I could even touch the net, brad.
>> I'm in that category, that's all right.
>> Dike-New Hartford two pint lead, here's Payton Petersen, attacking the rim, around the rim, no, her own rebound, and putback is good for two.
And now eight points for Payton Petersen.
>> Payton Petersen went in the rebound battle right there.
>> There's the deep three from Boettcher, no, and the board underneath by Buskohl, and a foul on the panthers.
>> She's tried hitting a few of those threes, and you can see the frustration on her face.
She's a shooter, though, she's going to keep on shooting that shot.
>> This is last touch by panorama.
There you see head coach Kylee Boettcher in her fifth year, she is a panorama native.
She is middle school, high school instructional coach right now, went to state as a player for panorama in 1995 and 1996, and played college basketball at Buena vista University.
Petersen with two more, into double figures with 10 points.
>> Just so good down there.
>> Dike-New Hartford, a six-point lead here in the second quarter.
This is Crees, the kickout, Boettcher from the wing, throws it ahead, Bixby running the length of the floor, the lay-in for two, Bixby with her second lay-up in transition turning defensive stops into offense.
>> And that's another reason why she's on top of that 2-3 zone is when they do get a stop she releases and goes to the other end for a quick, easy lay-up.
>> Here's Boettcher.
Gets it to Sellers.
Dumps it off to Crees, blocked by Petersen.
That's Payton Petersen.
The 5'11", or 6'0" variety, standing next to her, I would say she is 6'0".
And that is last touch by foster.
Of Dike-New Hartford as the panthers will get it.
>> Mia Waddle being so scrappy, senior going against a freshman.
>> Mia Waddle also plays soccer.
Her and Morgan Crees, coach Boettcher wants to send a big thank you to the soccer coaches for making them such great defenders as they move their feet like nobody else on the team, there is Boettcher hitting the much-needed shot for panorama to pull it back within six and Petersen gets blocked by Sellers.
Now panorama looking to run.
>> They've got numbers.
>> Three on two, the dump off, Sellers, lay-in, yes!
Panorama right back into it, down four.
Jadyn Petersen to Bixby on the right wing, into Jadyn Petersen, tipped away by Boettcher, great defensive play there.
By the northwestern College bound Panther.
And here is a foul on jaden panther -- or excuse me, Jadyn Petersen.
Here's this last nice stop and dish from Crees.
>> Defense turning into offense.
>> Similarities between these teams, eerily simple.
There's a catch and shoot from Crees on the inbounds, and Jadyn Petersen the rebound, dribbles through traffic, and Bixby now cut for the corner, I think jaden thought she was going to cut to the rim.
Three on one, the dish to Sellers, Payton Petersen comes up with a stop, now the three from Boettcher, off the mark, and a long rebound, tracked down and grabbed by Norton, and then a foul, unable to hit the brakes is Crees.
>> This is a very fast-paced, up-and-down game, look at the physicality here.
>> Four-point lead for Dike-New Hartford.
Inside Jadyn Petersen puts the shot up and gets it to fall.
She is just 5'8" but she loves to play down on the post.
>> Coach Dahl, he said she plays 6'0".
>> Yeah, 5'8", plays well above her height.
With a toughness.
Three from Waddle.
And Panorama not hitting from the outside from three-point land, one for 12 as a team here in the first half, and a time-out taken by Dike-New Hartford head coach Bruce Dall.
And year number 29.
Let's jump into the huddle with coach Dall.
>> Let's try sting right, so jadyn, who is in right now point guard, who is at point guard, you're going to lob it into Payton.
Two people over there, one down there, all right, stack it down here, all right, run dead spot, try to get it to the short corner and dive, let's go!
>> Coach Dall with players that have been in this position before, think back, Ellie, to that 2023 state championship team, you had seniors, Kenya lan fair, elry knock, 26-1, win it all.
Back in 2022, just two losses, and 2021, a perfect 26-0 season.
Here's Jadyn Petersen.
>> Coach Dall on that time-out telling his players to look inside, but then look at the baseline.
>> Payton passes on the baseline jumper, shot clock down to three.
Jadyn Petersen puts it up, rebounded by Sellers, she's got to be big inside tonight, doesn't she?
>> She does.
And Dike-New Hartford, good ball movement, a couple possessions where they're not able to finish the plays.
>> Here's the three from Kent, and it's good.
Kaitlin Kent with her eighth made three-pointer of the season, knocks it in to pull the Panthers within three.
>> Whenever you can get offensive production from her, that's a good sign buzz coach Boettcher says that for her she is the defensive stopper for this panorama team.
>> And there is Crees coming up with the defensive stop, averages eight points per game.
Panorama right now led by Tyme Boettcher, seven points, Jaidyn Sellers with six, here's Boettcher in the lane.
That won't fall.
Sellers putback, yes, the rim holds on for two.
>> What do we say?
Rebound battle, all night.
Mia Waddle putting the pressure on again.
>> And here is a bump from Kent, fouling Jadyn Petersen, and it will be Dike-New Hartford basketball.
42 seconds on the game clock.
A fresh 35 on the shot clock.
Oh, and that -- foster may have got away with a double dribble there, mishandled it on the pass, recollected it.
>> Oh.
>> And kept her foot on the ground.
Says the officials, and now Payton Petersen gets fouled inside, a couple of close near turnovers here by Dike-New Hartford.
>> Oh, that was close.
>> Toe stayed on the ground, I like it.
>> Good officiating crews here at the yeah high school girls athletic union state basketball tournament as Buskohl checks out, Payton foster back into the game, second free throw, no good for Payton Petersen.
Panorama, yet to lead in this basketball game.
Final seconds, Sellers has it knocked away, Bixby comes up with it, looking ahead, Jadyn Petersen with the clock winding down, and they run out of time.
And it is a two point difference at halftime.
Dike-New Hartford, 22, panorama 20.
This has been exciting, ready for a second half right now.
Let's send it up top.
Paul Yeager is standing by.
>> Well, there's Bruce Dall, we'll talk to him in just a moment here at our halftime as very, very good ball game here in our 2A, we have one more game to go and we have a halftime program, stay with us for that in a moment.
Coach Bruce Dall is with us, you've done this interview three different years in a row here now.
Leading in points percentage from the field, rebounds but also turnovers, what happened in that second quarter?
>> You know, we need to slow down a little bit.
We like to play fast, but they like to play fast too and they're jumping out at everything.
We need to be coming to jump stops and assessing the situation, probably, a little bit better than we've done first half.
>> In the first quarter you had really good pressure on panorama, that seemed to speed them up.
Going to talk about keeping that up here in the second half?
>> Yeah, that's just it, you know, you do what you do to get here.
Once you start changing things then you're not yourself.
So, you know, we've got to keep being ourselves, just need to be a little bit confident with the ball handling.
We're all right, we have five seconds to hold the ball, ten seconds to get it across, and just kind of slow down a little bit when we're breaking the press.
>> You be you, that's what you do.
Thanks, coach, appreciate it.
Bruce Dall, head coach of the Dike-New Hartford Wolverines, leading 22-20.

Congratulations!
[ Cheers and Applause ] >>> Congratulations to all of those new entrants into the hall of fame.
Really liked watching those last two play basketball here in the state of Iowa, and each year, the big 12 conference names a male and female athlete who exemplify the tenets of special Olympics, Iowan Marisa SLETS balm named big 12 special Olympics athlete of the year in 2018.
Here's her story.
♪♪ >>> Special Olympics is just really been a great Avenue for Marisa to build her self-esteem and confidence.
One event was over the edge, and over the edge was a fundraiser in downtown Des Moines where you repelled off of the financial building.
I think she ended up doing it four times.
She loved that.
>> When I play, I'm not scared.
When I went down, oh, it's different, yes.
>> 2018 she and a boy from Oklahoma were selected to go be the big 12 special Olympics athletes of the year and got to go to the big 12 championship game in Dallas.
When you see 80,000 people standing up giving your daughter a standing ovation, you just soak it in.
>> We have done dance for probably about six years.
>> We learn and dance, the skills, we move the steps, it's easier for me to do it.
>> I've known Marisa for a long time and it's been really fun to get to know Marisa in this way as a coach to see her perform and her athletic ability and most importantly see the way she cheers her teammates on.
She is always enthusiastic and excited and so happy to be here.
>> When she was born she didn't cry and the doctor and the nurse that was there in the delivery room, they were examining Marisa, they were looking at her hands and her feet, and before long they said, we think she has Down's syndrome.
Marisa will tell you that she is the boss because she is the owner of straw hat farms and I just work for her.
>> We grow some flowers from seeds, and we do -- summer in a pot and watch the plants grow.
>> So when Marisa was in high school was a time we were thinking about what she would be doing as she graduates.
And being in a rural area there's not a lot of opportunities for individuals with special needs to do a variety of different jobs.
We decided to pursue the opportunity of Marisa owning a greenhouse business.
>> Get the snow peas.
Do you want to measure out a bag of snow peas?
>> It's hard to believe that straw hat farms has been in existence for ten years now.
We have two grandchildren, and Marisa is an aunt, so grace and Sam.
>> Grace is 5.
Sam is 3.
>> Marisa is 29, and she loves her birthdays.
She's always saying how old she's going to be and she also reminds me how old I'm going to be.
>> On my birthday we are going to Des Moines for my cousin -- celebration of my birthday, happy 29.
And having fun, I guess.
>> For families that are wondering what they're dealing with, my approach has always been Marisa is probably going to be about a permanent 12-year-old.
She's never going to drive.
But, she drives the lawn tractor out in the garden, that's her way of contributing.
Some planting of seeds are way too difficult for her.
But, she can mix dirt and prepare the pots for the seeds with the best of them.
We don't often think we're learning from her, but we are.
>> Okay, give her the money.
>> I like -- my favorite, in that -- the squash.
>> I'm just proud of Marisa, she enjoys her life, and that's what we want everybody to do, and she just reminds you about that, how simple life should be, and that things will always work out.
>> Our best to Marisa in the days ahead.
Let's go back down to the floor, panorama head coach Kylee Boettcher is joining us.
I'm guessing you wanted a couple extra minutes in the second quarter the way you finished it.
What started to work.
>> That pressure defense, we're going to keep going, doing that all night, you know, just get them to turn the ball over and get them going faster than they want.
What we've got to do and execute on the turnovers.
>> The pressure you seem to be able to weather that a little bit and you're able -- Petersen, yes, she has 11, but she started strong, you were able to get her kept in check.
What's working with Sellers and your daughter?
>> Really, it's just using their quickness in the post, you know, just trying to jump those passes and making them go over the top.
Sellers got a vertical out of the gym.
If they try to throw over the top, tip or come down the steal or backside pressure is just as important, so got to continue to box out and get rebounds.
>> Coach, that's the best coat in the tournament by the way, thank you very much for your time, appreciate it.
>> Thank you, thank you.
>> That's head coach Kylee Boettcher, the former beaver, back to the floor now, it is time to play some basketball.
Brad Welles and Ellie LUFridge, ready to play and have you through all the sights and sounds, to the floor.
>> No offense, but she does wear it a little bit better than you, that's my opinion on the matter.
Ellie, that pressure defense really was huge for panorama in that second half.
>> It really was, and it caused 14 wolverine turnovers, they average 12.5 turnovers a game, and so they're above average, credit to panorama's defense.
>> It was tied at the end of the first quarter.
11-11.
Dike-New Hartford winning quarter number two, 11-9.
And a foul right out of the gates as that goes on Mia Waddle.
That is her second personal foul.
For foul situation you have panorama, Kaitlin Kent had two at halftime.
Jaidyn Sellers had two at halftime, and now Mia Waddle with two.
Here is Bixby, finding the back door open, and Dike-New Hartford up four to start the third quarter.
Deep three on its way, Boettcher unable to connect, offensive rebound, though, keeps it alive for panorama.
>> One other thing that we noticed at halftime was, the panthers haven't subbed, brad.
>> All five starters have played the entire 16:00 of that first half.
>> 16:00 down, 16:00 to go.
>> See if they get a breather through this third or fourth quarter.
From the corner, the three, in and out, no, and Payton Petersen with the rebound.
And Ellie, there is a very special sub that's sitting on that bench, too, number 24, there's a senior, Zoey Hambleton, just 5'6".
But this -- we talked about panorama, this is a team of destiny, and a lot of it revolves around it Zoey as she had one of the worst weeks you can have for a high school athlete, a week before her senior day, tore her ACL on a Monday, her mom Sonya who had been battling alpha one disease for quite some time passed away on Friday, and since then purple in the student section, purple ribbons have been all over for this panorama team, and certainly Zoey and this panorama team, that three right there from Boettcher, it seems like they're getting help from above.
>> It seems that way.
They're playing -- they're playing for more than a championship right now, they're playing for Zoey and her family, and we were able to talk to some of Zoey's teammates and they said they're not trying to be too overbearing for her but just enough for her to get through this season.
I also found out that Zoey is a part of the panther dance team, and they got to dance at one of the quarterfinal games at halftime on Monday and they modified the dance for her, to have a part, that she was still included in, which I thought was super cool that she was able to perform dancing, but also here on the basketball court.
>> Well, and she is taking part here as well, she checked in, in both the quarterfinal round and the semifinal round game to be on the court there for the final seconds.
>> Still making her presence known.
>> Shot clock at 10 for Dike-New Hartford here, 5:30 to play in quarter number three.
Foster drives.
No.
Sellers the rebound.
And panorama, an opportunity here to take the lead.
As the second seeded panthers have not led yet in this championship game.
Sellers in the corner.
With Bixby at the top of that zone.
It just really extends things out, and now losing it out of bounds is Tyme Boettcher, a 1,000 career point scorer, she'll play basketball at northwestern College as there you see the three, and there you see Hambleton, she is in it.
She's asking for more.
>> Love to see that energy off the bench with her team down three.
With so much more left to play in this game.
>> The officials, I think, taking a look, thought Payton Petersen maybe had some blood perhaps.
So I think we just picked it up in the coach's microphone there as well.
But no blood, so everybody stays in, and that pressure defense from panorama continues.
>> That's going to get Dike-New Hartford going faster, that's what panorama has to do with they want to stay within this game.
Coach Boettcher did say, though, they can get the turnovers but now they have to execute on the offensive side.
>> Yeah, 14 turnovers in that first half, they only had nine points on those possessions following those turnovers.
Facing this tough, physical Dike-New Hartford defense.
It's been tough sledding in the half court set.
>> Moving the ball around the perimeter, going from one side of the floor to the other.
>> How about that?
Jaidyn Sellers, the senior.
Knocks it in.
She said, it's absolutely pure joy to know we're playing for a state championship, and she is on the court, ties it up, possession -- will keep it with the Wolverines, but left open along the baseline.
>> Payton Petersen said I'm not going to guard you out there.
Jaidyn Sellers says, oh, but I'll hit it.
>> Sellers, 18 points in the quarterfinals, nine points in the semifinals.
And in to double figures, ten points for Jaidyn Sellers and now Payton Petersen, the game-high scorer has 15.
>> Moving the ball, working around the perimeter, looking for some high-lows but also looking for the baseline.
>> Sellers tries to jump her again and that's going to bring Petersen out a little bit more, might open things up inside.
>> Absolutely, they're going to have to extend that defense out and respect her now as she's hit two in a row.
>> Jadyn Petersen flips it over, Payton Petersen, two more inside, that's 17 points, seven rebounds for Payton Petersen.
>> How about three times?
Three times?
>> Rebound to Jadyn Petersen.
Dike-New Hartford, a three-time defending state champion in class 2A going for four in a row.
It has happened just once in five player history, here's Sellers, two more, panorama trying to keep that from happening.
Jaidyn Sellers starting to get it going, and the defense again, Ellie, starts it.
>> And this is all with Mia Waddle.
She brought her defender down, passed it off at the right time.
Can't convert on that play.
>> Dike-New Hartford a one-point lead, Bixby's shot, no, her putback, yes, back up three.
Dike-New Hartford's largest lead was eight points.
That was halfway through the second quarter.
Oh, that was a deep shot there from Boettcher.
And the pressure defense starts right on the rebound, Payton Petersen had it bounce right back into her hand, she's all smiles now.
>> She lost it but was able to get it back to score that two point right there, let's see if panorama can get back within three again.
>> Or maybe two.
Oh, the three-pointer falls for waddle.
>> Mia Waddle, I've just been really impressed with her tournament.
She's hit some really big shots for this panther team as she does there again.
>> How tough is it -- I should ask myself.
You miss your first five three-pointers.
>> Keep shooting.
She is a shooter.
She has confidence and she should have confidence.
>> How about Izzy Norton showing the confidence, dropping it in from the outside, and a time-out taken by Dike-New Hartford head coach Bruce Dall.
How about the junior, older sister Madeline Norton, a star on the volleyball team, getting it going here in the championship game, her junior season.
>> That's what -- >> Let's listen in now to coach Boettcher.
>> Down here I just need more movement, okay, they're in a 1-3-1, or spartan.
>> Morgan hunt.
Okay, here we go.
>> So more movement, Ellie, for panorama on the offensive end.
>> More movement.
Doing a nice job passing it around the perimeter but you need to have one person attacking the lane, looking inside and looking for the baseline.
They've gotten some really great looks.
See what they're able to do here down on this end.
>> Leading scorer for panorama, Jaidyn Sellers with 14, Tyme Boettcher into double figures with ten.
And then Mia Waddle with five points, and Kaitlin Kent with a three-pointer, and there's a travel violation as the pressure from the Wolverines turns over the panthers.
>> Just didn't keep her dribble right there.
>> Jadyn Petersen in the corner, her pass tipped, that ball bounced right to waddle.
Sellers was running the floor, beat everybody down there, but Waddle unable to get it to her.
Boettcher guarded by Jadyn Petersen, that's a fun matchup.
You can see it right here.
>> Even, again, I think panorama could give Dike-New Hartford some different looks on this end, do a little weave action.
>> There's a feed inside.
Boettcher in the lane.
The turnaround jumper.
No.
Tellers fights for it, but Buskohl comes away with it.
And head to Madde Buskohl.
>> She did.
>> Jaden traveled with it.
>> Just had some happy feet right there.
>> So panorama now down five here, would love a basket before this third quarter ends.
Oh A three from Sellers.
Yes!
Holy cow.
That's her second made three of the season.
And now a steal.
Sellers, a five point run, tied at 37.
>> How about that?
It's all tied up here.
>> Petersen has it knocked away by Waddle.
And the horn sounds.
Panorama has it tied as we go to the fourth quarter.
And Ellie, these panthers still have not led in this game.
But they are not going away.
As we see Sellers, the three, and then setting it up with the defense.
Down five with 40 seconds to go.
Sellers just the instincts, showing the athleticism.
And man, this is a great one, it's going to come down to the final 8:00 of this one, Ellie, we heard from panorama, head coach talk about spacing on the offensive end of the floor at halftime, we heard from coach Dall, limiting turnovers, they've got to find a way to settle down, and take care of the ball.
If they want to win their fourth straight state title.
>> He's probably in his time-out right now, just calm down, we've been in this situation time and time before.
Take a deep breath.
Do what we do and he talked about this too at halftime is, it's too late now to change who we are.
We can't change who we are.
We have to do what we've been doing all season.
>> Six teams have won three consecutive state titles, Dike-New Hartford became that sixth team last year, started with Linville sully, rock valley, davenport assumption, springville, newel Fonda, and Dike-New Hartford, and trying to win four in a row, that's a whole different story as that has only happened twice in the history of the Iowa girls high school state basketball championship, Dike-New Hartford trying to make it three as it was Ankeny from 2002 to 2005.
They won four consecutive 4A titles, and audobon 1921 to 1924, in the six on six days.
>> Rare, you talk about Ankeny.
Is there a story that you want to share?
>> There is a story behind that, the ball is staying with panorama.
The head coach Bruce Dall said they went and did their walkaround this morning at Ankeny high school, as he knows the athletics director from his playing days.
And they looked up at the banner, and they looked at four in a row, and he said I wanted them to see that it's possible.
So they did their shootaround in Ankeny's gym, saw the banner, and they're trying to bring it to fruition here today.
>> Trying to make a full circle moment happen for them.
I can just almost envision them at their shootaround, just maybe standing on a baseline, or all at half court and looking up at the banners and doing some visualizing as they prepared for this game.
>> That's a third personal foul on Mia Waddle.
As the 5'5" senior has been so important to this team.
There was a slot from Sellers, trying to get a three-point shot off, and, man, you hear the leaping ability, the athleticism?
How impressive was that?
>> She has got quite a vertical on her.
Watch this.
Have yourself a day, jadyn.
>> And talk about three-time state champion in the 100 and the 200.
That's the speed you're facing, also she will play softball for the Iowa Hawkeyes next year, an outfielder, she's excited about what head coach Renee Gillespie and her staff are going to get cooking in Iowa city.
For the lead, no.
Rebound to Payton Petersen.
>> I don't know if coach Boettcher liked that shot selection right there from her daughter, and, I mean, having your daughter out there on the floor, you're going to be harder on her than you are any other kid, Tyme knows that all too well.
>> Here's Bixby, the shot up over Sellers, Petersen fighting for it, and Tyme Boettcher ripped it away.
Here come the Panthers, three from the right side for Crees, no, offensive rebound underneath for Boettcher.
There's a three.
That may have been tipped by Jadyn Petersen.
And Dike-New Hartford holds on to that two-point lead.
There's some history with coaching her daughter as well as Kylee Boettcher the head coach said it was so special, started as softball coach in parks and rec, then became the high school softball coach and made the move over to basketball.
And there's the steal from Sellers.
Now Tyme with the basketball here, Tyme Boettcher says mom and dad, because dad had to take over coaching when she started coaching high school.
They both yell the same things, they see it in a very similar way.
>> But when they get home they're not talking sports anymore, they go home, they're just mom and dad.
>> That's great to hear.
And here is a good look from the top of the key.
And it's a bank shot for panorama's first lead of the game, up one here with 5:00 to play.
>> That's one way to get it to fall.
>> There's a steal.
Crees with the takeaway.
Takes it all the way.
It's good!
And a time-out take.by Dike-New Hartford as panorama has put on the blitz.
You see Boettcher, sometimes you need a little help from up above.
Boettcher gets the bank shot to go.
And then that defense.
Crees and Waddle up top, coach Boettcher, the soccer coaches, what coach Dall is saying to counter.
>> If not I want you guys to go four out and we need to attack it right here in the middle.
Okay?
Right there is where we need to attack it.
Okay, and two from there, okay, take care of the ball, ladies, let's go.
Hey, only down by three points.
We want to attack that, try to get an and-one here, and fall back here until you hear otherwise.
Let's go, come on.
>> Dike-New Hartford, class 2a state champs in 2021, 2022, 2023, the pressure of trying to win four straight.
It's a real thing.
The kids say there's one game at a time and you get in this moment, you've got 4:55 to play.
>> One game at a time.
It's one play at a time.
Value the basketball.
>> Here's the three from Norton.
She knocks in another one, Izzy Norton, 2 for 2, she has six points and we're tied up.
>> And that's what she does.
When she gets her feet set she is knocked down.
>> Boettcher, getting it going.
She has 13 points, draws a foul.
On Bixby.
And will go to the line to shoot two.
Let's go to the other end.
How about the Izzy Norton, she is coming up clutch.
>> She got her feet set, she knew that ball was going in the moment she released that shot.
>> Izzy Norton, a 27% three-point shooter, but she has attempted the second most threes on this team over 25 made on the season, in and out, no, at the free throw line.
For Boettcher.
Foster, the freshman, out to set it up for Dike-New Hartford.
And coach Dall said find something in the middle.
>> The soccer skills come to play, Mia Waddle.
I heard she's quite the soccer player.
>> That is exactly, you're supposed to use your hands on the basketball.
I don't know, you've got -- it's a great play.
Keep it out of the middle, though, right?
Here's jaden, inside to Payton, and Payton with the basket, and-one.
And an opportunity to extend this two-point lead now, up to three at the line.
>> That's being -- that's being coachable right there, you get it to the middle.
And then you do exactly what they drew up.
>> Left it short in the strong rebound grabbed by Sellers.
>> Brad, you think free throws are going to come into play here at the end?
>> We've seen a few misses, I think you start making some, if you could find your way towards holding some hardware at the end of this one.
Here's Crees.
Looking for help.
Boettcher on the drive, the tickout.
Deep two, no good for Waddle.
Another rebound for Payton Petersen, a double-double by the way, 13 points, 11 rebounds for Payton Petersen?
>> Does that surprise you?
>> It does not.
Does it surprise you in.
>> No.
>> The three-time captain of the all tournament team as a freshman, sophomore and junior, to come up big after her senior season.
>> Maybe going for a fourth.
>> Add another rebound.
And we have a foul or a jump ball.
That is going to be a foul on Kent.
And that's going to be the third on Kaitlin Kent.
Ellie, one thing I do want to point out here on Jaidyn Sellers, as panorama continues to bring that pressure defense, 19 points, eight rebounds, she's got eight steals, she's wearing knee pads and I know you have a strong affinity for knee pads.
>> Look on the court, only one person wearing knee pads.
Whatever happened to knee pads.
Nobody's wearing head bands and knee pads anymore.
>> That was your signature.
They couldn't live up to the Ellie hype.
Maybe Payton Petersen can, a four-point lead for Dike-New Hartford.
>> Again, she's a winner.
She's going to do what it takes.
>> Oh, in and out for Boettcher.
Offensive rebound.
Knee pads not needed on that board.
Calling for it inside.
Shot fake from Waddle in the lane, and a foul on the shot will have two free throws.
>> I love that play right there by Mia Waddle.
You see right here, she gets Maryn Bixby up in the air, slices through the defense, getting herself to the free throw line.
>> And the foul went on number 13, Payton foster.
Her first personal foul.
And the free throw from Waddle is good.
This might be nerve-racking watching it at home, fans here in the arena feeling the nerves as well.
Mia Waddle makes it a two-point game, time-out taken by head coach Kylee Boettcher.
And year number five, check in with coach Boettcher.
>> Passing right by us at the top.
>> Yeah.
>> What do you think about -- what do you think about we go just -- come with that pressure.
Go back to tiger.
Gotta go back to tiger, if she flushes up with her, go in and get that steal, if she flashes you go up with her, the tall one, you stay back, get the other side.
Here we go.
>> Hear the calmness of Kylee Boettcher, she played at Buena vista her first year as an assistant coach was underneath Kurt clawson at Cherokee high school.
She said I Learned valuable lessons from him, stay calm.
Don't be afraid to hand off responsibilities, trust your players sometimes, she went to mason city, she went on to panorama.
>> He really was the first man who gave her a voice in coaching.
He said, hey, I'm going to work with the guards, you work with the posts, and that meant a lot to her that he trusted her to do that and gave her a voice.
>> He said just go.
Right, just do what you want to do.
And right now Jaidyn Sellers, a post, doing fantastic work for panorama.
With the basketball down two.
>> Another key for this panthers team, use your outs, outsmart, outwork.
>> Waddle for three.
No, rebound, lost out of bounds by Dike-New Hartford.
It will stay with the Panthers, and a fresh shot clock here, 1:14 to play.
Coach Boettcher's been getting text messages from Kurt clawson this week, and today just words of encouragement.
Here's a foul on Payton Petersen, that will send Jaidyn Sellers to the free throw line.
Dike-New Hartford trying to hold on for their fourth consecutive state championship, a two-point lead for head coach Bruce Dall, the Petersen twins, big senior class, Maryn Bixby, Miranda Tyler.
>> It's all going to come down, this last 1:13, is composure.
How poised can you be as the clock is winding down in this fourth quarter?
>> One of two fro free throws is good, offensive rebound gives panorama an opportunity to take the lead.
Kent over to Sellers.
Final minute, inside, Boettcher, shot, too strong.
A fight for the rebound.
Last touch by who?
It is going to be Dike-New Hartford basketball.
Panorama crowd didn't like it.
>> Tough shot by Tyme, got too far under the basket.
>> Jadyn Petersen, twin sisters with Payton Petersen.
Payton will play volleyball at UNI, jadyn will play at Louisville.
The Petersen's mom Bobby Petersen, the head coach at UNI, a legend in her high school days as well.
Let's listen in with coach Dall to see if the Petersens can come away four-time state champs.
>> Four out, you guys have got to take care of the ball.
Four out here, get it to Payton.
Payton, don't hesitate.
I want you to go.
You go and try to score.
Okay?
If it's not there, then what I want to do is run that play I talked about, okay, so Payton, if it's not there, I'll say reset, okay, and we get jadyn on the baseline, Payton, Bixby you're there, jadyn through there and get back and play some defense.
Take care of the ball.
Stay here, stay here.
Go with your gut, be ready for the flex cut, okay.
Let's go.
>> Ellie, when you have Payton Petersen, a three-time all tournament team captain draw something up for her final minute.
>> That's her go-to right there.
I don't know who else you draw a play up for.
How many times do you think coach Dall said take care of the ball?
>> Yeah.
Turnovers, still a concern.
24 turnovers created by this panorama defense, and they need 25 right here, down a point to the three-time defending state champs, Dike-New Hartford.
Foster gets bumped and fouled by Waddle, her fourth personal foul.
>> We've talked about it all game, Mia Waddle just putting that pressure on the ball.
>> Turns the shot clock off here as we're under 30.
Petersen's holding onto it, panorama, the crowd asking for fouls, and now they are going to foul Payton Petersen.
And the foul goes on Kaitlin Kent, that will be her fourth personal foul.
So now two panorama panthers with four, see Kent right there.
A senior.
A huge free throw.
Mom does not handle stress.
She -- she is a nervous wreck right now.
She is kind of like her daughters, it's probably easier to play in it than it is to watch in it.
>> Oh, for sure, for sure.
People ask me, hey, Ellie, would you rather be call you go games, coaching games, OI playing games, really, I would rather be playing these games.
Who other, though, than Jadyn Petersen would you want at the line.
I would want her at the line.
>> Sidney Petersen in that shot adds well.
Live streaming, YOUTUBE, "X," Facebook, Iowa PBS.org, catch live stream on all those areas.
A two-point lead for Dike-New Hartford, up to the free throw line is Payton Petersen.
Payton is 4 of 6 at the free throw line in this championship game, it's a big one right there.
A three-point lead now and a foul committed by Payton Petersen, with 13.7 up on the clock.
Dike-New Hartford fouls to give, smart play.
>> Very smart play.
I think that's what they're going to keep doing.
Put panorama on the line.
>> Coach Boettcher senses that's going to devise a bit of a plan here.
13.7 up on the clock.
Let's listen in to head coach Kylee Boettcher.
>> Out of bounds because I want to set screens for Tyme, get the ball to Tyme, as soon as you feel the foul, throw it out.
We're not going to play that game.
Okay, that sounds good.
You take it out.
Tyme, you start here, give me Mia, Morgan, yeah, we're going to do like a little beaver action, try to get it here.
Okay, they're going to want a foul, right.
Or would you rather go for two?
>> No.
>> Going for it, ladies, let's go.
>> How many fouls do they have?
Five?
>> All right, well, the beaver action, a shout-out to head coach Janet berry her head coach at Buena vista.
Trying to set up a game winner or possibly get to the free throw line depending on the pressure here.
>> And that's who you probably want shooting a three would be Tyme Boettcher, see if they can get this play to fall here as they execute with 13 seconds left.
>> Up top, Mia Waddle.
Ten seconds to go here for the class 2a state championship Boettcher picks up her dribble.
Now Sellers and a time-out taken by coach Boettcher from the sideline.
One more conference.
With 5.7 on the clock.
>> Panorama, I think, waiting for that foul.
Dike-New Hartford deciding not to foul on that possession.
>> Well, Ellie, as you're excited for this final 5.7.

And right now, down three in the state championship game, as Dike-New Hartford looking to make history and win four straight state titles, and here's the foul by Bixby.
On Waddle.
And so we go to the free throw line right now, the three-point lead, Dike-New Hartford commits the foul, and now Waddle to the line with just 3.2 on the clock.
Making the first one.
>> Now, do you make this one, or do you miss this?
I think you've got to miss it.
>> You're playing the miss tip out, get a two point shot in for the tie.
Because otherwise you make it you've got to foul either before it's inbounded or immediately.
>> Right, and then you'll put Dike-New Hartford back on the line.
>> And with less than 3 seconds left you have to go the length of the court.
>> I like how in the time-outs coach Boettcher asks her players what they want to do, giving them a little bit of a say, because they're also, you know, they're playing in the game.
They know the players well, and I like how she asks, or just questions them, on decision-making.
>> Well, this Dike-New Hartford team, this program, this community, Ellie, they just win, they are used to this moment, the final three seconds, they have won three straight championships in basketball, they won three of the last four state championships in volleyball.

The pressure to try and win four in a row, Ellie.
Had to feel so heavy, and for panorama, what an effort from them, head coach Kylee Boettcher, strong senior classes on both sides, but Kent, waddle, Nelson, Boettcher, Hambleton and Jaidyn Sellers, 20 points, nine rebounds for her, Tyme Boettcher, 13 points, six rebounds.
Those two embracing right now, left it all out there.
