highlights.
Do we have coach ready?
Okay.
We're going to go to a break.
When we come back, we'll talk with Kristin Meyer.
Our doubleheader night continues.
>>> Johnston, in the lead, 25-11, here at halftime.
Dowling Catholic.
And Kristin Meyers with this coach.
This is a game that ava Zediker needed to be big.
Johnston is double-teaming her.
How do you get her involved?
And maybe somebody else to get other folks going?
>> That's the million dollar question, isn't it?
>> We talked about a couple of things at halftime.
We have to have other guys step up.
Step to a gap, if they double ava.
We can't keep ava ragged when we need other girls to take the ball and find other ways to score.
>> You talk about getting girls to move.
You need them to slow down.
Johnston's elevating their pace of play.
How do you do both of those things?
>> It's an aggressive mentality but under control.
You have to do a repeat to see if help is coming.
We have to have a downhill, driving, aggressive mentality.
>> Thanks, coach.
That's coach of the Dowling Catholic maroons, Kristin Meyer.
This is how we got to halftime.
Let's look at the earlier action.
We call them highlights in the business.
Ava Zediker, she would end up at the free-throw line.
A nice move to the baseline.
Then, it became a lit of Johnston.
And a lot of this player.
Trytten, a future cyclone.
Tanke, is three of six from the field.
Two of four from three.
Six rebounds.
Total of ten points.
Let's see what unfolds in the second half.
Hopefully they are able to catch their breath and are ready for quarter number three.
>> It was fast-paced in that first half.
And seemed to be to the benefit of the Johnston dragons.
>> That's what they wanted to do.
They wanted to speed up the maroons.
That's what they did with that.
Not allowing any flow.
They turn over and go the other way.
The speed and the pace is the change.
If you're the maroons or the dragons, keep things going the way they did before.
>> The statistics did that in the first half.
Dominated by Johnston over Dowling.
Holding the maroons to eight turnovers, that turned into ten, Johnston dragon points.
It is Olson, Muller, Zediker, Trytten, Muller.
The three fouls back into the game.
Tanke, and Lewis.
The maroons with the basketball, to begin the second half.
This is a team that is averaging better than 62 points a game.
They average nine three-pointers per contest.
Now, they have one three.
You see the scoreboard.
Tries the stepback.
When Zediker gets by the defense.
Jenkins was right there to keep her away from shooting the shot.
And had to pass it off.
>> Tanke to shut down that side.
>> Third time they played one another.
They know each other very well.
Tanke to Lewis.
One too many passes.
And Dowling Catholic will end up with the basketball.
>> You're right.
Exactly one too many passes.
Go ahead and take that up to the rim.
Try to be unselfish.
That's fine.
When you're that close, go ahead and go up.
>> Riley guarding Zediker, the skip to the corner.
Zediker, with the rebound and the foul on Riley.
That's going to be number four on Aaliyah Riley.
>> She sat a good portion of the second quarter.
Now, she's going to have to go to the bench for probably a fairly long time here in the second half.
Riley is trying to box out.
Zediker is in the air.
Ari Phillips, the freshman, in for her.
Left open, is Olson.
Will not take the shot.
Now, to Zediker.
>> This is a situation, as coach Meyer said.
You have to have somebody else step up and start taking some shots.
They seem to be very tentative.
They are looking for Zediker to do things.
Somebody else has to take the initiative.
Work the ball towards the basket or rise up and knock down some jumpers.
>> Tanke.
>> The three, left it short.
And Phillips will track down the rebound for Johnston.
Jenkins now inside.
A power move.
Can't get it to fall.
Muller with the rebound.
This dragon team, dominant, not only in Iowa, but the Midwest.
A win against Nebraska.
It just wasn't in, a shellacking that they put on Nebraska's team in Millard west.
They are ranked in the top 15 nationally.
Zediker's drive.
Can't get it to fall but will go to the line to shoot two.
As Jenkins will pick up the foul.
>> Coach Jilek talked about the fall they wanted to test their team a little bit this season, to start.
There were a couple good games between Hopkins and Millard west.
Maybe not quite to the level of some of the top teams in Iowa.
>> Zediker able to not both of them down.
She has eight.
Her first points in the late half.
A little different pace, compared to the beginning of the game.
Kinnetz, able to track that down.
Finds Jenkins.
Avoids the triple team to Phillips.
Shot clock winding down here.
Kinnetz in the paint.
Able to get off before the horn.
Dowling ends up with the bowl anyways.
Muller on the block.
Long possessions and Phillips with the steal.
To the rack.
>> That's twice in this ball game that Phillips has done that.
Ball handlers for the maroons.
Need to protect that ball.
Handling out in front.
That's inviting for a player like Phillips with the quick hands.
>> She has six now.
Left alone.
And Dowling able to get the bucket.
Ellie Olson with the basket.
And Trytten with a great feed.
>> Drew the defense.
Ran that set play.
>> Phillips with quality minutes with Aaliyah Riley in trouble.
Going to be turned over.
>> Olson was down there, needed to cut in the lane, and cut to the basket and call for the ball.
>> Muller on the block.
The fade.
Katelyn Muller with her first basket.
>> Might have gotten a travel.
That's all right.
Dowling will take that.
>> Able to get there, 21-4.
Running into a buzz saw tonight.
There's Lewis.
She knocks down her third triple of the game in double figures with 11.
>> Just when Dowling Catholic is making a run, you get a big three like that.
The answer.
And a rebound to Johnston.
>> Right away, as soon as that ball came off the rim, they were out and running, filling lanes.
Good job by the maroons to get back.
That's a 13-point advantage for the dragons.
Zediker will launch.
>> A little stepback jumper, with good defense on her.
>> Lewis looking to go to work.
Dowling Catholic looking to cut it to double digits.
Zediker in the paint.
Tanke with the tough rebound for Johnston.
>> Doing a better job of stake shaking the defender and getting open in the middle.
>> Jenkins, working in on Muller.
A foul on Ellie Muller.
The sophomore will pick up her second.
>> Muller just leaned the hands on her.
Leaned instead of staying vertical.
>> Jenkins, committed prior to the season.
>> Met up with the maroons, a double-double, 14 rebounds.
Of the 14, 5 offensive.
She went to the offensive glass and got second-chance opportunities for her teammates.
>> Ellie Muller will sit.
A smaller lineup for the maroons out on the floor.
And Johnston will bring Averie Ryan back into the game, along with Isabel Balsley.
Take out your big and we'll see how the smaller lineups do against one another.
>> That's the aggressiveness that coach Meyer was looking for when Paul talked to her at halftime.
We need to have others step up and be aggressive on the drive.
She did with a nice spin move.
Took it in strong and drew contact.
Aili Tanke will pick up the foul.
That's her first.
Free throw not there for Trytten.
Still a ten-point game here.
Lewis, on the deck for Tanke.
Left her open for three.
Tanke with a rare miss from the outside.
Lewis will now go to the line to shoot two.
>> The screen came.
Two defenders went with the ball handler.
That allowed Tanke to pop out free.
Lewis was able to get her the basketball.
It came up short.
Crashed the boards.
Did a good job of getting into traffic, to pull that rebound.
>> Jenica Lewis, able to knock that one down.
Might have heard of her before.
Jenica Lewis.
A lot of coaches have heard of her.
Holds 50 division i scholarship offers.
Had that primaily coming into her freshman season.
>> Coach Jilek said, a year ago, she was a little tentative, when she got at the high school level, as a freshman.
Now, she's more comfortable.
Sees the floor well.
Good job of making herself available of receiving the basketball or createling for herself.
>> Across the half-court line.
Now, they say she stepped on the line.
Over and back, going to be the call.
Tough defense that time by Averie Ryan.
>> A little sly smile by Averie Ryan.
The toe of Muller goes over the backcourt.
>> Johnston will get the ball back.
33 seconds to play in the third quarter.
And 12-point advantage for Johnston.
Johnston, 65-53.
And 43-31.
And the defense, if you're a fan of it, it's better here.
Going to be tied up.
There's five seconds to go in the quarter.
>> Zediker comes KRASHG down digging, to tie up Jenkins.
>> Tanke, has that one deflected away, inside of two seconds to play in the quarter.
>> Muller, able to pick that off.
And that's tend of the third quarter.
34-22.
Johnston, with a 12-point lead.
Trying to win the third-straight championship and the fifth-straight tournament appearance.
>> Make sure we're talking defensively.
We need to switch anything, just talk through it.
Offensively, get the and one.
Right?
We are attacking.
Has anyone gotten a charge yet?
We're going.
When you drive, turn it a little.
Ollie's coming to here.
Pass score and dribble and go.
Okay?
We still have to be downhill attacking.
Good job defensively.
We only gave up nine points, right?
That's a great quarter.
Make sure we find Tanke and Jenica early.
Boxing out.
When she screens, she will pop.
If we don't have it, we're offense, with Ellie on the perimeter.
In the offense, we're okay.
>> And you can hear, again, get into it mode.
Turn and get downhill.
>> This year's recipient of the golden plaque distinction award.
Her eighth season of Dowling Catholic.
She did coach.
>> That was right after Caitlin Clark had announced she was going to go take her game to the next level.
She stayed in touch, showed up to practices.
And talked to the players.
It's a nice connection they have.
>> Aaliyah Riley.
As Zediker knocks down the free throw.
Zediker, with 12 in the game.
And has scored all of Dowling's points here in the late half.
It's back to a ten-point game here.
Ari Phillips in the lineup, joined by Kinnetz, Tanke, and Lewis.
Jenkins, working in on Muller.
Going to be picked off by Olson.
She is joined by Muller, Zediker, Trytten and Muller.

And the pass is already made.
The maroons able to pick it off.
That's one of the few turnovers that Johnston has made here in this ball game.
>> Zediker, the stepback three.
The time-out from Johnston.
Just like that, seven minutes to play.
And the maroons are starting to crawl their way back into it.
>> A couple different times in the second half.
Zediker has been able to get loose with the crossover dribble and stay behind the three-point line.
Knock it down.
>> Let's go inside of the dragon huddle and hear from Chad Jilek.
>> Just let her go.
Don't let her stop getting there.
It's the offense not flowing.
Not moving.
We're not looking for players.
We have two scorers right here.
We're not setting a screen for them.
You're not being aggressive.
You have to be aggressive.
You can score.
Right?
Hey, let's run, dragon, right now.
Can you run dragon?
Okay.
Set a good pick for the corner.
Get a good screen.
Let's go.
>> They have taken a step back.
The aggressiveness is not there on offense.
They settled into a mode of where they're not taking the ball to the hoop.
They're not moving as much as they were in the first half.
And they need to get back that intensity.
>> We talk about Johnston's defense.
How about Dowling Catholic's?
>> They have done a good job.
Their defense has done a great job of improving throughout the entire season.
They are man-to-man.
And go out and get backside help.
This is a team, when you know you're matched up against them, you will have to fight for every point you get.
Johnston came in averaging 72 points a game.
>> Not the second time in the regular season.
And Moore will get the foul.
That's her third.
Rebounding, Johnston.

Just frustrating Dowling Catholic every time they get the ball in the frontcourt.
That's going to be the third at 5:45 to play.
