- One way classic cars can be saved is by collecting them.
In this episode, we visit a number of collectors and take a look at their cars.
Yeah, Gary Chittenden this is a1950 Meteor, two door and mild custom, the way they would've done it in the fifties.
It's got the original Flathead V eight in it, six volts still Canadian made only.
So it's a fairly rare car, but this is the most fun by far.
Just a, just a good old car.
It has 61,000 miles on it.
Go ahead, get in.
Yeah, he's my, my copilot.
I never would normally buy a purple car, but this purple is different so I didn't have to do much to it.
So a few mechanical things here and there to, to make it, make it real good and do the brakes and stuff.
But other than that, fine - Comings.
Good - Boy.
Never sat back there did you?
64 Cadillac sedan Deville, 69,000 miles on it.
I like low mileage.
The only thing wrong with this one, when I got it, had a couple of dings in the side and I had to have the carro replaced.
I had to get that from the states of course.
So you buy it from the states cost me two 50 when it was mailed, it was, the package was folded in half so I had to get it straightened out and polished.
It was another two 50 so it was a pretty expensive chrome along the side there.
But I had a choice between this and a coop.
I didn't like the coop because the skinny roof and the long deck on the back looked like he could land a plane on it.
And I thought that was more formal, nicer looking car.
This one I had painted three times, so I was satisfied with that.
He, the th 4 29, 3 35 horse power engine still gets over 20 miles to the gallon green.
This car has a rip in the front seat I have to have fixed and that's about it.
Why this car?
Why I never had a Cadillac before?
It's in such low mileage in good shape now.
It would be a good one to get.
And again last year with real fence.
Oh, I love fence.
Yeah, it's a joy to drive, you know, it's just, just feels good driving it.
It's comfortable.
It's very fast.
I think it gets good mileage, you know, what else do you want?
And it looks good.
It's only the size of three Toyotas and it's not, there's not a lot of these, especially in Canada.
I've always had older cars and they would be all collector cars now, but you know, you go back 50 years and I was, I was driving old stuff.
I used to buy a fairly new truck to go to work, but always, always old cars to drive.
It's just the, the style, the nostalgia of it all.
It's just what I remember being a good time.
We used to drive and drive and drive and gas was 25 cents a gallon and it just didn't mean much.
You know, you just keep driving.
Yeah, it's just like today let's go for a Sunday drive.
Well, you jump in a new car and it, it takes you on the drive, then you're spending too much on gas and worried about it.
In the old days you'd just jump in the Cadillac or whatever and go see what's over the next hill.
- Come on, pop.
- This is a 61 Ford Galaxy.
It is sunliner.
It has 34 original, 34,000 original miles on it because it had such low mileage, it sat around for 20 years.
I had to either rebuild or replace the engine.
So I replaced it right now, still have the original engine.
I put in a 64 Thunderbird three 50 with a four barrel on it.
Consequently, it's got a high rise manifold with car two close to the hood to put the original air filter cleaner back on.
So I'll have to get a, a side mounted one just to clear the hood.
But that's, that's a little consequence.
There's no rust on this car at all.
It still has the original interior.
I had to break down and put a new top on it.
It finally turned into a real rag top and had a few dings in it.
Had those fixed and repainted in the original Corinthian white.
It needs a few little things here and there like any old car will do.
So it's a nice cruiser, nice to, nice to go down the road.
I never put the top down so I needed a new top and I may trade it for a hard top, make somebody happy with a convertible, fairly rare model.
There were a lot of them made, but most of them are crushed or gone now.
So there's a few in the states, but you don't see many in Canada and it is a Canadian car, so it's very rare to find a, a Canadian 61.
Anything without rust on it.
We've got this one sitting right here.
49 Dodge Canadian.
Dodge Canadian Dodge is based on the Plymouth.
So it's a smaller car than the American Dodge a little bit.
But this is one of my, I always wanted this.
My friend had it for years and years and years.
He's a dodge lover and this one is a a 68 9 passenger dodge.
It's had some a window problems.
So addressing that right now.
But we can see past all the stuff.
It's got a new interior in it, all new vinyl interior's.
Gotta put it back together a bit.
She's pretty solid.
It's a US car 3 83 high performance in it.
You can see it.
It's got a little bit of rust on the back quarters and that's all.
Pretty much all it needs is the light switch put in and the, and the window finished off.
And again, this one hasn't been touched or pretty clean for never being looked after.
Very quick car for the size of it.
It's past.
I just sold a a 49 DeSoto.
This is a 49 Dodge DeSoto was a coop with low mileage again.
And it, of course, that's the one I really wanted to keep.
So it sold first.
This one I bought to be a hot rod.
You can see the, the Bondo coming out of it doesn't matter.
It's solid underneath everything needs a little help on it and they're gonna put, my friend had a a 1970 challenger with three 18 drivetrain.
Of course you had to put a four 40 in it.
So I've got, I can get that three 18 look fit under there beautifully and give it, give it some quick that it needs.
But it's had a, an interior at some time has to be gone over.
But the engine in this is just an anchor now.
But she's a pretty solid old girl.
Those bumpers are highly sought after for, for hot routers.
They like the ripple bumpers.
But this would be another fun car.
Makes me wonder, I had an older and and dodge when I first started driving legally and it had a bit bigger ram on the hood and I wish I'd saved that.
It was just, it was beautiful.
- Hi, my name's Doug Daniels.
I'm from Barrie Ontario.
This's a 1965 Mustang that I purchased seven years ago from a local classic car dealership in Berry.
And I've been working on the car ever since.
It was pretty plain Jane when I first got it and I've changed the engine transmission, done a bunch of modifications and then turned it into more of a muscle car than a classic.
But you know, it's been a hell of a project to work on so far and you know, I'm not done yet.
I still got a bit of work to do.
So really enjoy working on the old cars.
And this is the best part.
That is a 3 0 2 crate engine that I bought from Ford racing about four or five years ago and installed it in the car, replaced the original 2 89 that was getting a little tired and starting to blow a bit of smoke.
I've done all of the engine work, the transmission work.
It has a four speed top loader in it with a hersch shifter.
Put a set of headers on it as well.
Headman headers.
Dual exhaust custom dual exhaust.
I've changed out the balances at the back to match the Shelby with the chrome rings.
I've changed the, the grill and all the name badges, all to brand new badges.
All the trim in the car is brand new.
The interior is completely redone back to original again.
It has a full set of gauges in it and tachometer that were installed after we were finished with the engine when I was 18 many years ago.
My very first car was a 1965 Mustang, same color as this car only it was a convertible.
I drove the car for two or three years and then bought something a little newer.
My daughter actually one day was at, at one of the used furniture places in Barry that also sells classic cars.
And they had some furniture they were buying for her friend who was going off to college.
She saw this car sitting there and recognized some of the pictures from my basement workshop that I had posted of my original Mustang.
Gave me a call and said, Hey dad, there's a car just like yours sitting here for sale.
Why don't you come and have a look?
I went down and had a look at the car and made a deal with the guy and, and purchased it.
My favorite part of owning this car is driving it.
As I said, I had one of these when I was 18 years old as my first car.
Loved that car then I wish I had never gotten rid of it.
And it, you know, since I bought this, it brings back a lot of memories of that old car and know some of the good times I had growing up with it.
Most Mustang owners name their cars.
It just seems to be the thing to do.
I was kicking around with a name for the car and you know, there you have to pick at something that means something to you, at least in my opinion anyway.
And the, the person in my life that took over when my mother died, that was the closest person to me was my stepmother and her name was Gracie.
So unfortunately Gracie passed away about 15 years ago.
One of the nicest ladies I'd ever met.
And the car is actually named after her.
And it's kind of my way of having a tribute to my mother-in-Law.
She was the greatest person.
- My name's Jim Lawrence.
It's a 77 Gremlin Chevrolet.
Powered three 50 turbo, three 50 tranny shift kit, line locks, reverse fell body transmission, a lot of bells and whistles.
12 bolts ch in.
My dad had one when I was a kid and when I seen this thing for sale, I grabbed it, brought the car home, tore the motor train and everything out of it right away.
And what you see is what you get now.
This is a rare one to find one in this kind of condition.
The body is actually excellent on the whole car.
The undercarriage.
It's as good as new described in the appraisal sheet.
- I am Kim Sutherland and this is a 1975 Mercury station wagon.
Bobcat.
This car has been slammed.
It was a woody originally and, but everything inside is stock.
It's a six cylinder.
The rails at the top have been taken on off and of course the, the wood's been taken off.
It's a three door, which makes it kind of unique with the two and then the, the one in the back.
So yeah, it's a gentleman in and I wish I could remember his name in the moment 'cause he deserves this, did this paint about 10 years ago and that's kind of her shining glory.
And the kids love it and they're always saying, mommy, mommy, the car's on fire.
They, they, they enjoy the paint.
It's pretty cool.
Yeah, unlike some cars, I mean, she stopped so she doesn't, she doesn't go real fast.
But she's great on gas and I'm able to take her anywhere and, and for that I love her.
You don't see a lot of women driving I think.
I think he's starting to see more and more and there's always been those diehards, but it's nice to, to be able to get out and it's a community and it's a, it's a great community and a lot of super people definitely in, in our club in the Infield Beach Cruisers Club.
Our, our president is a woman.
I'm the DJ for the club.
I'm the announcer and there's a couple of other women I I, but I mean, if you wanna look at percentages, you know, we're maybe maybe 3% of, of a club.
So we're still, we're still pretty much a rare duck.
And I, I think it's important to not just get in a car and drive that you gotta, you know, try to learn something about it and, and be able to, to take care of it.
And, and, and I'm still learning a lot.
You know, I'm still learning a lot.
But my husband's really great about it and he's been, he's been a lot of help.
But for me it's just something new to learn.
You know, I'm now in my fifties and, and it's just a whole new world and it's been, it's, it's been great.
- I am John Ryan from Newfoundland.
My car is a 57 Chev.
I bought it off the original owner in Oakville 10 years ago had it restored and the rest is history.
I had to do right from bumper to bumper.
I'm a mechanic myself and I did all that stuff.
God, don't tell me it won't start.
Oh, everyone start.
- She won't even turn over.
- No, I couldn't get it started.
It, the starter has been on the car for 17 years and never been changed.
So I sat in the car, I sang a Johnny Cash song and turned the key and waited to go.
The thing is, when we, when we started driving these cars back in Newfoundland, we had problems getting perks.
So what we would do, we would go to the scrap yard, find a part like a ball, joined our to rod in and if it didn't fit, we'd drill it over or do what we had to do or shim it to make it fit.
So that's the way we got our free parts 'cause we couldn't afford to buy them.
There's a little ppy engine.
There's only a small engine.
We've punched her over and updated the carburetor and there she - Is.
- My name is Rick Winston.
I'm from Minville.
This is a 1970 Buick GS convertible.
It was born as a Skylark when I picked it up, so I've converted it.
It's a now a GS stage one tribute car.
It's got a big block, 4 55 Buick in it that's been bored and punched out to 500 horsepower and 450 pounds of torque.
Why this car?
I, I, I wanted a Buick Abody.
It could have been anything from a 68 to a 72.
This one followed me home.
I've, I've pretty much had my hands on every nut and both in this car every winter I take it apart to a certain degree, put it back together again because that's how my wife knows where I am during the winter.
Alrighty.
So as you can see here, I've put a yolk style hank and control in here that still leaves my pedals functional if anybody else wants to drive the car.
I had a 6 67 Chevelle when I was a kid and they were just driver cars back in the day.
I got married in my early twenties.
So I decided that after the kids were outta the house and outta school, I got myself a little toy.
The past president of the Infield Beach Cruisers Car Club.
Basically we put the club together because guys like to hang out but talk about their cars.
But it turned to a little more as people realized we could get some money made for charities by having our events and that's what we went ahead and did.
So with our sponsors, Napoleon Home Comfort, we've sponsored the radio for cardiology through the radio stations and we've also started a a fund for a champion park down in Ville that will create a completely accessible park for all the possibly disabled children that are in Ville.
And we're gonna build this park and it's gonna be the best one in Ontario when we're done.
- Steve Haw, 1976 GT four 60 Ranch Arrow.
I've not done anything mechanical to it since I've owned it.
Basically just painted it.
It is all I've done to it in the past seven years and drive it and enjoy it.
First car I ever bought off a lot was a 1976 GT Ford Ranch Arrow.
It's me in 1977.
This car, even when I was a kid, there are very few of 'em around in town.
I grew up in Ville, Ontario, so they're pretty rare to have 'em then.
And now I go to a lot of car shows.
In seven years I've run across four.
I had a car broke down and I was looking for cars and on the podium there they had this black ranch arrow shiny with the silver stripe on it.
And I said I had to have it.
It's a beautiful car to cruise in.
It's comfortable, that easy to drive and when you go out, the guys' shows it's the only one there, so you just enjoy it.
There is another story about this car relates to the VIN number, which is, I won't go into the whole VIN number.
It describes the year where it was made and that it is a GT four 60 at the end it goes twelve fifty nine fifty.
I was born a 12 month of 1959.
I was 50 years old when I purchased this car.
Wow.
So I started thinking what year was, what month was this car built?
My son was born 17th of February.
I look in the door, lo behold, the car was built in February.
Wow.
And I thought, what's a chance?
Is that ever happening to something that you want?
It's like winning a lottery.
Oh yeah.
So I believe this here is here to stay.
- Tom Carlos.
Present time.
I'm the president of the Barrie Thunder Classics Car Club under the hood's gonna look a little different than normal.
I call it motor bling.
It's a 3 83 this year.
A friend of mine, we did some ceramic coating, did a new intake four barrel record the RAD and just cleaned it up.
But it's the original 3 83 to the car.
The car was originally purchased by my grandfather, Joe Joe Rech, and in September of 1967 at the national exhibition when they used to hold the car shows in the automotive building.
